Recently I experienced two events which started me thinking about one safety feature of the new automobile ignition systems. I have a 2012 Toyota Camry which has an ignition key (?) which does not have to be inserted into an ignition keyhole for starting the engine. One has to push the start/stop button while depressing the brake pedal to start the engine, and just have to push the start/stop button to turn off the engine. (this is now standard for most new vehicles.). on two recent occasions I parked my car and walked away without pushing the start/stop button. I did not realize what I did for two reasons: (1) the engine runs extremely quietly, (2) more importantly, I was not required to turn off the engine by turning the ignition key which is something that I have been doing almost subconsciously. On both occasions I did not come back until about half an hour later to discover that the engine was not turned off. The safety issue arises from the following scenario. Suppose I came back home at night, parked the car in the garage under the house, gone inside the house and retired for the night. The presence of the key in my pocket does not guarantee that the car is not idling. This is the big change brought on by the new ignition keys. The engine running in the garage can create an extremely dangerous carbon monoxide poisoning situation for the inhabitants of the house. A simple solution to this possible carbon monoxide build-up problem would be to install an automatic engine shut-off feature in the car after a certain amount of time (~20-30 minutes) that the engine has been idling. When I contacted Toyota they said that such a feature does not exist in my model of the car. I hope you will study this possible safety problem and come up with a feasible solution.

P/O response ltr to Toyota Corp. Re 2012 camrydate: December 26, 2013 -...furthermore, my brother and I have stressed to everyone we have spoken with since our first contact on dec16, 2013 with Toyota regarding these dangerous mechanical problems I.e., the unintended acceleration, steering pulling to the right as well as the offensive odor that occurs when the ac is turned on....no one will assist us until January 6, 2014...we cannot imagine that CEO [xxx]... would find it acceptable to wait three (3) weeks - until January 6, 2014- to first begin an investigation while being left with a defective and damaged Toyota Camry. [xxx]. did not respond to our phone call either. We located Nov 16 2012 details and fwd to Toyota Corp: Nov 16, 2012- at approximately 11:15pm on the 405S, all traffic was stopped by the police North of the skirball. We were standing still for about 10 minutes. Suddenly, our car lunged forward due to unintended acceleration. As the car veered to the right, I managed, with great effort, to steer the car as we went into the lane to the right of us. After traveling more than 100 feet, I was finally able to get the car to come to a stop. Thankfully, we did not hit and were not hit by passing police and fire vehicles. We also smelled something burning in our car for a couple of minutes. On November 17, 2012, we went into Toyota service to report what had occurred the night before. We wanted Toyota to know what had happened because it was very frightening and we were concerned about our safety. We also wanted to know how many other people had experienced this problem and how Toyota had resolved this dangerous, safety problem. Toyota service checked and responded that there was no recall for this unintended acceleration in the 2012 Camry. Unfortunately, we accepted that this was an isolated incident experienced only by us. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

This complaint is similar to complaint #10545567. The Camry experiences spurious or intermittent acceleration hesitation and sometimes stalls when acceleration is needed. This is a potentially dangerous condition especially in when entering a highway or accelerating onto an interstate. Dealer has been notified several times about the situation, but because this is an intermittent condition, the dealer doesn't see it and claims cannot diagnose the condition.

I bought this vehicle on September 2012 just for my usual commute of 20 miles per day. The first few months just about 1000 miles on the odometer I started to experience stalling anytime I slow down on traffic or turning. I thought because it new vehicle but it keep on until my first oil change about 5000 miles when I complained to the dealership; there is no any code and I was referred back to the dealership that I bought; second oil change no problem found. Now it stalls almost any time that I am driving it, I did open a case (case #: 1309201533) with Toyota North America, and I got call from their regional representative today that because there is no code, Toyota cannot resolve the problem because there is no any code to diagnostic. I am afraid, this will cause an accident to me and my family because I have nine and seven years old who always sit at the back, and if the car was to stall us on highway, it will be a serious disaster for my family. Please, I will like Toyota to take the vehicle with a complete diagnostics or replace it completely as I am paying for it as at now. Thank you

I am the owner of a 2012 Toyota Camry....on at least four occasions the motor has remained running after I left the car....this car has push button ignition....did I not turn if off properly or is there a system malfunction....I park my car in an attached garage to our house and the door to our house from the garage is left open in the summer for ventilation.....if the car remained running unknown to us during the night we would perish from the carbon monoxide fumes....I feel this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed by Toyota, if not only for us but other Toyota Camry owners....so far Toyota has not addressed this issue to our satisfaction....in fact the owner of the dealership where we purchased the car laughed at our safety concern.....the alarm system on the car is useless as the alarm is the same when I start the car as when I stop the car and have the door open or if do not turn off the engine and get out of the car and close the door....all these alarms sound the same and make them ineffective....I have a hearing problem related to ear surgery replacing my bones of hearing by an implant in my right ear which also makes it hard for me to hear if the engine is running or turned off.....the alarm system on this car needs to be modified to ensure notification to the driver if the engine is running be it human error or system malfunction.....

The car is becoming undriveable. I took it to the dealership to get checked out, and they said there's nothing wrong with it. On their report they stated "the vehicle's operating as designed." Since I bought this car it's been performing progressively worse. Every time I drive the car it seems to lose power. The ride is choppy, burdened, and labored. The entire car seems to be struggling with itself. I get into the car feeling fine physically, and then I feel ill and sick after a while. There's foul odors coming from my car, definitely from the exterior and possibly from the inside. The dealership checked for exhaust leaks and didn't find any, but I'm smelling things in the car no one should be smelling. It even seems like the car wobbles and shimmies as it travels down the road.

The contact owns a 2012 Toyota Camry. The contact stated tat while driving 60 mph, there was a loud screeching noise from the engine area as the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who performed a diagnostic and advised that they could not detect any failure codes nor could the failure be duplicated. The failure recurred intermittently. The manufacturer was notified of the issue by mail but there was no response. The failure mileage was 1,500.

On acceleration the gas cuts out, lasting around 3 to 10 seconds. I cannot duplicate this condition, it just happens sporadically. It is very dangerous because the car behind me has no indication that I am in limbo and could easily rear-end me. This usually occurs when I am turning at a low speed, but has happened when driving straight.

I was driving at 60 mph on highway but suddenly the engine revved all the way to 7000 RPM and the car jerked violently. I put my foot off the accelerator but the engine still stays at 5000 RPM and doesn't go back down to normal. Had to pull over to the shoulder with emergency light on. Tried to get back on the highway but at 35 to 40 mph, the engine made loud revving noise and the RPM jumped to 7000 again. Had to pull over again and call for a tow truck.
