This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Vehicle experienced a driveshaft separation due to a crack in the transmission output shaft yoke, extensive transmission damage was done to the rear section of the transmission case, also the U-joint caps were expelled from the yoke, the vehicle skidded due to the crack.
While driving about 40 mph vehicle began to rattle, when slowing down to make a right turn, driveshaft broke in half. Vehicle was towed a bodyshop for repairs. Dealership has agreed to pay for half of the repair cost.
My background and training is in metallurgical & materials engineering. Upon repair of the transfer case the service technician discovered the failure was from the mainshaft retaining ring which failed. I inspected this retaining ring and noted the failure as a fatigue failure which cracked through 80% of the component material before final fracture. This snap ring was defective since installation in the vehicle at orginal manufacturing. Fortunately, I noticed sounds eminating from the transfer case before catastrophic failure occured which may result in personal injury of occupants or other drivers on the road. Please file this report and contact me for any additional information. Sincerely, eric fremd B.SC.
