My 1997 Explorer will temporarly stalls without warning since new, usually when pulling out into a stream of traffic.this causes a severe safety problem for the occupants of the car. I have taked the vehicle to tallahassee, Ford, tallahassee, Florida several times (remaining overnight there for over 10 days) and the only effort to fix this problem was to install a set of spark puugs. The service manager advised me not to bring the car back since the problem is intermittent and can't be fixed. I feel no one has taken my complaints seriously and no real effort has been made to fix this problem. The vehicle continues to have the problem, noticibly worse in hot weather and I have no more support from Ford Motor Comapny despite writing and calling Ford's consumer complaint division. The car remains to be hazardous to drive and I hope you can help me with this problem. I am really suprised at Ford Motor Company for placing a long time customer in a dangerous vehicle with no support in making necessary repairs.

I have a big question conserning the 4.0 SOHC "plastic" cam tensioner. I have had my Explorer in a local shop for 4 weeks "diagnosing" me check engine light problem. Today I find out that I have a totally wrecked 48,000 mile engine due to the fact that Ford installs plastic cam tensioners from the factory only to replace them later with steel units. I also found out today that I am going to have to purchase a new engine for the low, bargain basement price of $5400. My god that makes me happy. There are 4 Explorer in my local dealership with the same problem. I am beginning to see a trend here! could somebody please tell me what's up with these engines. I was also told that the new engine, which is a 2000 model, "has been redesigned".

Engine "ticks" primarily at cold startup. Problem becoming more prevelant however, now it occurs also at a warm startup. Engine also "hisses" at low speeds to idle. Rear end leaks fluid and also shudders at high speeds. "clunking" noise often heard and felt from rear end when vehicle stops.

Chain tensioners have deteriorated and broken up. Engine now rattels and grinds. I have fear of major engine damage. After talking to Ford dealers in reno nv and one in susanville ca I have been told every thing from "your on your own " to " Ford is working on a permanant fix so be patient. Is Ford going to fix my problem. I understand this to be a major widespread problem.

Ford acknowldges problems in their service bulletins relating to this particular part. The service alerts warn of catastrophic engine failure which is what happened to my vehicle. This "defect" cost me $2178.68. Ford refuses to cover any of these costs.

Sep 171999

Explorer

Engine misses and stalls in various situations including highway speeds and from a stop. Dealer has been unable to repair after replacing ignition wires and vaccuum assembly. I consider this to be a very dangerous situation because of loss of power steering and brakes. It also causes the vehicle to act as if the brakes have been applied causing a stop from high speeds.

I know that Ford is fully aware of the problem. The replacement parts reflect that. Those who experience failure during warranty are fortunet to save hundreds of dollars. I still as of yet not claimed my vehicle.
