I have a 97 Ford Explorer. For almost a year I have expereinced Torque Converter Slippage. The OD off warning light comes on when I am driving along at 60 MPH and then when I come to a stop the transmission crunches as it shifts down. When I start off again the transmission slams through the lower gears.

I have had the transmission flushed, checked by two transmission shops who keep telling me there is nothing wrong because the OD warning light is off by the time I get there even if I start out for their shop when it first comes on. Then they tell me that on my particular model there has been a lot of problems with the torque converters.. Now a certified mechanic tells me that I may need a new torque converter which is going to cost me over $1,300.00.

If this was such a problem with this particular model, was there a recall? If not, why not?

I was driving the vehicle and the "OD" light started flashing. The transmission began to shift hard I was unable to stop the light from flashing by pressing and depressing the "Over Drive" button. I went to the dealer they reset the code cost $122.00 drove 100 miles same problem went back to dealer they said I need a trans flush did that still the same. Reset code no flashing light trans ran smooth and 100 miles later back on again. Anyone ever get this problem code and have it repaired correctly? Its amazing that the transmission works fine when the code is reset but after awhile the OD light flashes and the trans shifts harder. The dealers need qualified transmission mechanics able to diagnose these codes properly and stop guessing and taking peoples hard earned money and not being able to satisfy the problem the first time.
