CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

Radio volume control has a mind of its own. Actually it has lost its mind. Turning the volume knob incites it to an even greater effort towards deafening the occupants. Maybe that's what killed the hearing in my left ear last year ?

I think that I read somewhere(internet) that squirting tuner cleaner into the control helps the problem. I haven't tried it yet, but I bought my wife a can for Christmas and am getting ready.

The radio volume goes up really loud when you are trying to lower the sound. What a nuisance especially when you are talking or trying to talk. Dont know what the cost of repair would or replacement would be but other people need to be aware of this problem.

Explorer Eddie Bauer 3.2L V6

When lowering the volume it will intermittently go up. This happens on both the knob and the steering wheel controls.
