I have the car less than a year and the transmission made a clunk sound... then the check engine and wrench lights came on. We changed solenoid and still goes into limp mode.

Well after 2 months of researching, this is a common problem - the transmission wire harness had a drip on it from the ac condemnation. Ford says there is no recall.

2008 Ford Explorer is a junk. Trans is no good. Won't shift and when it does, it bangs into gear. Ford won't fix the problem until the car is out of warranty. They tell you that they can't find anything wrong. I will never buy a Ford again. If you do you will be sorry.

I purchased my Explorer brand new in 2008. By 2010, I felt transmission was clunking and delaying shifting. I brought it in multiple times to the Ford dealership. Of course, every time they said there were no codes and couldn't find a problem. Well throughout the last 4 years I have brought it in again and never could find anything. Warranty is now up and all of a sudden the wrench light comes on. Ford wouldn't help with the warranty so I brought it to a local mechanic because it's half the price. Waiting to see if I will have to replace my whole transmission. I will never buy a Ford again. I sure wish I would have seen this site before I bought it. Awful service and seems there are thousands out there with the same problem. Depending on what my mechanic's outcome I will be contacting an attorney.

The mighty wrench showed up on the dash, took to Auto-zone, got 0775 code pressure control solenoid fault. Was able to get ACE transmission to replace, no more banging into reverse, no more banging into gears, it was a FIX. A little costly 764.00 but not too bad. They changed trans filter, added 5 qt trans oil and solenoid block.

Before I went to AMOCO was told I needed to rebuild, $3,200.00, went to neighborhood trans shop, they found a fifth gear code, needs rebuild. Went to Zimmermans Ford, rebuild $3.900.00. I did research on the solenoid block and found that there have been upgrades to the solenoid block, I have the 3rd generation in it now and it is working just fine.

I read that someone on here had Ford put two trans in their car and it still did not correct the problem, he got rid of the Explorer. I could not get a grip on that, but if they did not change solenoid back in those trans could be why it did not work, just a thought. Always check the solenoid shifter, whatever car it is, it is a cheaper repair then a trans and some cars the part is not in the trans, it is outside. I have changed a few and they got the car shifting again and they are under a hundred dollars, not like the solenoid blocks at $420.00, but still again cheaper then a rebuild trans.

Good luck out there, this time I beat the the shops and the $3000.00 or more they are asking but they may get me next time if I don't do my Home-work. 10/8/2014 9:12 AM

OMG!!!! I'm so sick and tired of Ford! It's not a reliable vehicle!! About two years ago, I noticed when shifting from parking to rear there was a delay. Now there is an ugly jolt when shifting to rear. It clunks when shifting from any gear to rear only!! We took it to the Ford dealership and told us a transmission specialist would need to look at it. We scheduled an appointment, so the "TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST" would take a look at it. They called us and told us we needed a new transmission. It would cost us $5,000.00 to get a new one. When my husband when down there to speak to the manager, she (yes she) informed us that the transmission specialist had not taken a look at the transmission. My husband was irritated at this point, and asked how they knew the truck needed a new transmission if the specialist never even looked at our truck. She couldn't give us an answer! It was a nightmare!!! We took it to an outside mechanic and he told us he couldn't find a problem with the transmission itself. He said we would need to take it to a transmission specialist to check the computer. I'm beginning to think it might be the PCM. We're going to reset it tonight and we're taking it for a transmission flush this weekend. I pray to god that would resolve this issue. We don't have the money to buy a new transmission! Seriously!! We've had several several Fords and every single time there's been a problem with them, even if the vehicle is only two years old. We decided to buy the one we have now and let me tell you it was a huge mistake!! OMG!!! I tried warning my husband!! I told him let's buy a Toyota, Honda or Nissan, but since he's a veteran he's all about American-made cars!!! He refuses to buy anything that isn't American. Grrrrr... I think he maybe finally coming around though... Especially, when I point out the fact that we bought a 2001 Honda (for $5K) 4 years ago and bless the lord it has been a fantastic vehicle! No problems whatsoever!! Thank the lord!!!

Update from Apr 28, 2014: I forgot to mention when I go into the freeway and I begin to accelerate there have been times where nothing happens. It just stays at the same speed and after waiting for about 10-15 seconds it finally starts to accelerate.

This is something that many people complain about on the Internet sites the slipping trans and jumping into gear in 1,2,3,and 4th gears. took mine in and they got a code the 5th gear was going but that was the code reader it happens in 1,2,3,and 4 on mine. I will be going for a 2nd opinion. they said they do a computer check that takes two hours for 50.00 dollars .the strange thing is sometimes when I restart the car it works ok so I believe it is the PMC not communicating with the TMC causing it not to shift correctly. For it to have what they told me would be a Flashing of the PMC AND THE TMC.but of course the shops say it"s the 3,000.00 trans that need to be rebuilt, they go for the most costly thing first.

I will see what this other shop says after their scan of the computer,I mean 52,000 miles on there so talked about Explorer on there TV adds. this is something that should not happen for many more miles then 52,000 that's just a break -in amount for these new cars and these explorers are having trouble since 2002 till now.they need to get their trans from a better company.oh and the first shop I brought it to said they get a lot of Explorers in for the trans and rebuild the sleeves for the rods in the transmissions. he could have made that up for all I know but it sounded good . Ford needs to fess-up and have a recall on these trans. many people out there are saying the same thing all one has to do is a Google on the Explorer trans and you will see all the complains. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.

Same issue as all the rest, hesitate into reverse, hard downshift when stopping, intermittent 4x4 light coming on.

I wish some people would list bulletin numbers or TSR when they get this fixed.

Bought this truck with 30,000 miles 2 yrs ago haven't really had any issues with it until now, clunking into reverse, just waiting for the transmission to be sitting in my driveway when the truck rolls back. Isn't going into gear while driving right. I have 81,000 miles on this truck & just brought it in to have a transmission flush today I'm hoping this will take care of it but after reading post probably not. It's pretty sad how sh*tty they make these cars & trucks these days & still charge an arm and a leg to buy them.

My powertrain warranty ended at 5/60,000 so I called Ford customer service to ask about the 'good will repair' and of course they gave me no information. After talking to a customer service rep and a supervisor all I was told was it was out of warranty and there are no recalls. I again asked about the goodwill repair and was told that is proprietary information so they could give me nothing. Whatever that means. I took my car to a reputable transmission shop and was told Ford knows about this problem and has inform the dealers and shops how to fix it. I was quoted $2000.

i purchased a 2008 ford explorer from wilmington, nc capital ford off of oleander drive, in april of 2011, the first month i had the vehicle, i had already encountered issues with said vehicle. As I went to bring it in to get attention, according to ford there was nothing wrong with it- as time would progress the problem would worsen. I took it back to ford again they acknowledged that there was a problem, it was then they wanted to charge me 200.00 to put it on the rack to assess the problem. As my schedule did not permit me to bring it to the shop due to heavy work load and family matters, at the time it was convenient for them, but not for me, let's not forget what brought me in was the coolant issue due to a faulty screw. Which ultimately warped the cooling rods in the transmission, which ultimately lead to a melt down in parts.
