This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Driving on a highway at 70 mph, the windshield drivers side molding became detached, started shredding (causing a dent in the door) and before I could pull over, flew off the Explorer. Part of the molding is still attached (about 1/4 piece). Very glad it did not hurt anyone, but what if a motorcycle was behind me? this does not have a recall through Ford. When I ordered my part, estimated at #450.00, 3 other people had the same problem the same day, according to the parts counter person.
2013 Ford Explorer XLT, factory seams not sealed under power lift gate in rear caused water leaking into third row seat from seatbelt, carpet had mildew and mseatbelt was drenched, took to Ford dealership three times without resolve and had to self pay because extended warranty did not cover water leaks. Would never have noticed this first occurrence if I had not purchased custom weather tech floor mats throughout vehicle which allowed me to see the pooling of water. Had to tell the Ford dealership what to fix after online research and multiple forums with same complaint. Now has several inches of water leaking from right drivers side into floorboard, belt squeals when accelerating in rain causing lights to dim and vehicle to slow down. Obvious manufacturer defect. Mildew smell very strong coming from air vents causing headaches when driving vehicle. This leak occurs after after every rainstorm while vehicle is stationary and will leak into cabin onto leg while driving in the rain, leakage entrance point unknown, but exits into vehicle under steering wheel. Ford corporate continues to blow me off and wants me to pay for a diagnosis which I have already done. There needs to be a recall which fixes all leak points with proper seam sealant and all carpets and air system in vehicle being replaced as mold causes respiratory health issues.
Goodyear fortera hl tires showed cracking after only 19,540 miles on 2013 Ford Explorer purchased new in January 2013. After this discovery, I need to replace all 4 tires.tire numbers are dot 4B8T manufactured in Canada on 3/2012.
The vehicle is rolling away while in "park". it is the exact problem described for other Ford vehicles but the Explorer is not on the recall list. We have experienced this occurrence twice now. The first time it occurred, the vehicle rolled out of our garage and into fence and tree. The second time, it rolled out of a parked spot while my wife was in the driver seat and clearly observing the transmission was in "park".
Noticed leak into spare tire well years ago and jones Ford in N. charleston could not find a leak. 8/13/2018 took our vehicle in for the same exact problem and found the water pours down the third row seatbelts anytime it rains. There is now mold in the carpeted area below the 3rd row seats. The leak happens while the car is stationary, driving, anytime it is raining.
10-15 minutes after commuting on the sun coast parkway in Florida, I experienced double vision, became unable to think clearly or make decisions (ie: To pull over and call for help), and hit numerous upright, rubber barriers which separate the express lane from the other lanes of traffic, as well as either a temporary concrete divider or metal rail. Much of the following 24 hours after my accident are foggy or I do not remember at all. After 2 full neurological work-ups, I still have no definitive diagnosis. Recently, I received the recall notice for possible exhaust issues in Ford Explorer. My SUV sustained significant damage and has since been repaired.
Randomly honks with and with fob in or near car and without the car running. Check engine light comes on after getting fuel, and sometimes it does not stop the gas when pumping.... send a code for sensor in fuel compartment.... door panels crack
Recently while driving my vehicle, I have begun noticing a rotten egg/sulfuric smell. This has been occurring for approximately the past 6 months. The issue will happen while I am driving, and also if I am sitting at idle for an extended time (at a red light or in traffic). I have noticed feeling fatigue while driving as well, and there are times where the smell makes me nauseous or gives me a headache. I work in emergency services, and I am extremely concerned with the smell that is entering my vehicle.
We have a 2013 Ford Explorer that we have taken in late last year and had the carbon monxiode problem addressed and we are still having issues after the recall. We still smell it when we accerlate the gas. I try not to drive my vehicle because of it. Now when I run the ac and step on the gas the compressor for the ac drops down. If I run the ac on 5 and I accerlate on the gas it sounds like I just turned it on and running it on low and then it finally kicks back up to 5. if I can get rid of this vehicle I will not get another Ford and will tell everyone I know that Ford doesn't care about safety just the money. This vehicle is not safe to drive because of this issue. Its the same as having carbon monxiode in your home. It is dangerous. You would not put your family in it, but you say you would to keep from recalling them. All of the Explorer need to be taken off the road that has this issue. Ford and there ceos are putting everyones lives in danger but Ford is all about the money/greed. What will it take take to put the safety of peoples lives first. People getting killed due to this issue. Something needs to be done!!
Monoxide carbon odors from the exhaust pipe are entered into the vehicle, and when I drive for long periods of time I feel nauseous and disoriented and I have to lower the windows every 20 minutes
Noticed water leak coming out of seat belt harness area in third row. Water leak is causing entire area to become wet in third row. Mildew smell is now present. Afraid there may be mold growth causing health issues. I put towels around the seatbelt to catch water and they are soaked when I change them out. Rain water comes leaked on when the car is parked or while in motion. I am not aware of where the leak is starting or how to fix.
On a 2013 Ford Explorer, the shift lock release keeps getting stuck and car is unable to shift into gear with out manually moving the release pump. This is after car is in park.
2013 Ford Explorer XLT drivers side arm rest splitting between seams. Splitting is expanding on drivers door side. Checked online and many others have the same concern with this model year 2013
Continue to smell a bad odor from vents. Contacted Ford, went to dealer today, did free fiix, but problem not still exists. It does this occassionally and last few minutes.
Continue to smell a bad odor from vents. Contacted Ford and wanted to bring it in but will cost money to have it checked out. It does this occassionally and lasts a few minutes. Previously have smelled a strong gas odor which made me have a severe headache for hours. Thought there going to be a recall. Have 2013 base model.
This vehicle has the exhaust fume issue where the cabin fills with exhaust fumes and is difficult to drive due to the smell. You have to drive with the windows down in order to tolerate driving. The recent recall was done - vehicle taken to dealer to have the ac reprogramed and tailgate seals inspected. This did not work. We will be trading the vehicle in and purchasing another vehicle soon. This issue needs to be addressed. Ford has had too many safety and quality issues that go ignored by the manufacturer. This vehicle also has the peeling paint issue that Ford refused to address as well. Poor quality - unacceptable.
My Ford Explorer 2013 back tailgate window shattered. It was cold out about 30 degrees but my rear defrost was not on at all that day. I drove my car to work which is about a 15 minute drive. I got in the left hand turn lane to make a left turn into my work and it shattered. No car behind me. I was going about 5 miles per hour. I then turned into the parking lot of my work.
