I bought the 2013 ford explorer in December 2014. Around February I experience my first power steering loss. Almost wrecked it with family in my car. It was pretty scary. I turned the car off and back on and it started working again. When I took the explorer to ford for an oil change I mentioned the issue with them and they said nothing was wrong, I even called for to let them know the issue but did nothing. Also, Keep in my mind I was still under warranty. My power steering would continue to go off and on every now and then but on May 2015 it went out for good and I was a few thousand miles out of warranty and they wanted to charge over $1600 to fix it. I called ford to see what they can do and they would not do anything because I was out of warranty nor did they care that Iet them know while I was in warranty. I know their was a recall on power steering before but they said my explorer was not part of it.

The exact same issue as #60 complaint: "The electric power steering quit working on my car. There was a recall for my car's year model for this issue, however, Ford said it does not cover the month my car was manufactured. I have taken my car to a Ford dealership who told me they verified that it was the exact same problem that the recalled vehicles had. I then opened up a case number with Ford "

So, I had my steering issue fixed at the dealer and they told me that if there is a recall I would be reimbursed!

power steering failed...it started with two warnings on the dashboard and stopped working when I pulled into a service area...towing a 3100lb camper at 65 MPH on the NYS thruway is not a good thing ..It took 8 hrs and three towing bills to get home and 3 days to fix...SAFETY RECALL?

The power steering quit working on my 2013 Ford Explorer the dealership said it would be about $2000.00 to fix. I seen where 2013 Explorers had been recalled for this issue so I called the dealership. The dealership told me that yes these Explorers have been recalled for this issue because of safety concerns but not the month that my vehicle was manufactured (apparently it was manufactured at a different plant). So I called Ford Motor Company who gave me a case number and said i would have to have my car checked out at a dealership to make sure it was the same problem. The dealership said that if Ford will not cover it they would have to charge me $100.00 for looking at my car. The dealership called me back a couple days later and said it WAS the same problem. Meanwhile, my car was in the dealership waiting for them to decide whether or not they would cover it. After a month of not having my car, Ford calls and says they will not be covering this defect. They would not even tell me why after asking them. It seems odd that Ford admits this is a safety concern but at the same time does not seem to be concerned about it.

I live in NJ and was heading to Maine to vacation with my family and friends. While pulling into a gas station I received the "Power Steering Fault" which ultimately turned out to be a failure of the Power Steering Assembly. The sensor in the Power Steering Assembly caused a failure in the Terrain Management System and somehow disabled the turn signals from working. We managed to make it to a Ford dealer in Maine where we are told that the whole Power Steering Assembly has to be replaced. I am told that the part is on backorder, which tells me that a number of people are experiencing this issue. Since I have my family with me I legitimately have concerns about the safety of the vehicle and will most likely be paying a visit to the dealer back in NJ. Being 700+ miles from home and experiencing this problem does not give me confidence that this problem will not occur again.
