This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
We heard about the possibility of carbon monoxide issues with the vehicle. Concerned if it could be the cause of our 9 year old daughter's complaints of headaches when in the vehicle.
Strong exhaust smell in cabin under hard acceleration. Requires opening the windows to dissipate the smell. Concerned about prolonged exposure for child and family. Have been experiencing the problem for over a year (since new).
Bought this Ford Explorer April 2017, it was a program car with 12,000 miles. I noticed a smell inside the cabin when the air conditioner is on. Dealing with headaches for three months, took at trip out of state and my whole family complained with headaches the entire trip. Finally realized it was my car. Needless to say im not very happy with Ford. It is currently at Ford, waiting for parts to fix this issue. Been there for two weeks :(
My Explorer has the strong smell of exhaust fumes that come into the cabin while you are driving. It is making the passengers feel sick and getting headaches. It is presently at earnhardt Ford being looked at.
Exhaust odor smell, as soon as car speeds up above the 40 mph, it starts smelling exhaust in the car. Smell is so strong that cause headache. This is poison carbon monoxide.
I have had an issue with the exhaust smell in the vehicle from the initial trip I took with the vehicle. I have discussed with the dealer and they have acknowledged that there have been other complaints but Ford has not recalled or come up with a fix for the problem. I am aware of other customers using the lemon law in Florida to replace their vehicle. Now that the problem has been exposed by the media I would like to see a solution to the problem. I can always take the Florida lemon law approach if there is no solution. The problem is not just with interceptor vehicles that Ford is now addressing?? most if not all Explorer from 2011 have the issue. The problem is very prevalent when the car is accelerated quickly. I would be happy to discuss with someone and actually show them the effect by acceleration.
Smelled gasoline in cabin after driving car for 2 miles in morning. Air conditioner was on, temp was approx 75 degrees. Contacted dealer and they said that sometimes with new cars it is the result of the coating on the new parts. Car was purchased brand new yesterday, but had 187 mies on it. (per dealer, it may have been a swap from another dealer and the miles came from Transport). Made a service appointment for 8/16 (next available), but service rep had no knowledge of any issues of this sort.
Exhaust fumes, and carbon monoxide filling up the interior of vehicle, symptoms of coughing violently, exasperation of asthma symptoms, lightheaded, nausea, while driving on highway, waiting at a red light car fills up with exhaust fumes. These condition happen everyday
Ford Explorer Sport 2017 smells of exhaust gas in the driver cabin. I bought the car in March 5, 2017 and took it to dealer 3/9/17 to complain about exhaust fumes smell when I drove on the freeway. They told me they tested it and could not smell anything. The problem has continued and it happens especially when I drive on the freeway. In June a was going to drive my car from la to New Jersey. After three days of driving I had to turn back to la because I got dizzy and felt nauseous every day after driving 6 to 8 hours. I saw last night on the news that there is a problem with exhaust fumes and carbon monoxide and that made me realize that I am affected by that. I called Ford hotline earlier today. They said that there is a fix but when I took it to the dealership they told me that apparently there is no fix for the 2017 yet and I got the advise to be carefull and drive with my window down. That is not the solouting you want after paying 55G and having only 3500milles on the odometer!
Every time gas is pushed at full throttle there is a smell of eexhaust in the cabin of the car, this is a new car just purchased, my two kids vomited and don't wanna ride in it this is not a joke at all.
Odors in the occupant compartment under heavy throttle situations-climbing steep grades or accelerating onto the freeway-or when the HVAC system is in recirculation mode.
Possible carbon dioxide leak. On a recent long trip I had trouble with headaches and lightheaded. It became worse when the air conditioner was on. I got home and was very sick, I had my neighbor drive me to the hospital. My blood pressure was low, red blood cells low and was severely lightheaded. That was July 19, but I did not know about the exhaust fume problems until the news reported it on July 28; so a blood test for carbon dioxide poisoning was not performed. I think this has been happening off and on with me driving this car, but in a much milder form of symptoms. I looked up the symptoms for carbon dioxide poisoning and I had most of them. I do sometimes smell odors when I turn on the air or vent. Please check into the problems with the Explorer I need this repaired.
While the vehicle is in motion, exhaust fumes come inside vehicle when the air conditioner is turned on. This happens when on a city street and a highway. The fault or problem that is created for unsafe conditions is the smell of exhaust fumes. Unknown for the component part or system that is causing the safety risk. This happens every time the vehicle is driven.
Exhaust smell and eyes burning when acceleration with air conditioner on.inside of vehicle took to Ford dealer and they say they don't smell anything. This has been ongoing since it was brand new 50 miles on vehicle
Twice since purchasing my new Explorer I have gotten deathly ill while driving, had to pull over and be taken by ambulance to the emergency room. I'm 70 years old and had thought it was a medical issue. However, I have been poked and probed for every possible aliment and all have come back negative and am in great health. Even my heart tests were outstanding. I saw the Explorer stories on the news, looked up carbon monoxide poisoning and note those were the symptoms I had. In the incident last week I was feeling worse and worse as I drove and was just able to get off the road before I passed out, my vision had gone blank, I starting sweating with the air on, and I became extremely dizzy and disorientated. I spent two days in the hospital thinking I was dying because that's how I felt. I'm in excellent health, bike 20 miles day 2-4 days week, play league hockey, avid golfer that has competed at the national level, etc. This was not a 'illness', I'm convinced it was carbon monoxide posioning. Updated 11/06/2017 the consumer requested a status update. Updated 12/07/2017 the consumer stated that he passed out while driving the vehicle and required hospitilization.
Vehicle in motion- carbon monoxide detector reading of 45 ppm (parts per million). Passengers complaining of headaches, nausea, lightheadedness which prompted the use of the meter.
