I took car to Paul Cereme Lincoln Mercury, local dealer, complaint was moaning or groaning sound from under the car on driver's side. Dealer recommended replacing the steering "rack and pinion" unit, upon removal, mechanic said there were metal fragments in the power steering fluid. So power steering system was flushed and re-filled.
Steering was slightly better after the work. My research had already led me to believe that the problem would not be fixed, so I asked, "what would be the next step if the problem persisted"?
I was told, "if the problem persists, the next move would be to replace the power steering pump", and if that didn't resolve the issue, that final step would be to replace the power steering fluid reservoir.
A friend of mine runs the maintenance garage for a local Taxi cab company, his lead mechanic looked up Ford's service bulletins and this care has three about steering, The same three that I have related here.
