CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford significantly updated the Fusion for the 2010 model year. We wish they hadn't

Throttle body issues have led to a ton of reports about a sudden deceleration and loss of power while driving. Ford issued a “customer satisfaction program” in March 2014 that, unsurprisingly, has left very few customers satisfied.

2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle would not accelerate. The contact shut the engine off and was able to drive without failure after restarting the vehicle however, the failure soon recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. The technician stated that the throttle body would have to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 39,000.

I have a 2010 Ford Fusion and have been having this problem for a while now where my car while driving will jerk really hard than start vibrating and then come to a halt, I will put the car in park and turn the car off and restart and drive again then the same thing will happen this time the engine light comes on I took my car to the mechanic and the Ford dealership and both told me that its the throttle body and its on back order and has been on back order for sometime now I have driven my car and its keeps happening over and over again now I am no longer driving my car and had to rent a car which is causing a financial burden but I have no choice til the part come in for my car to be repaired. I was also told by the Ford dealership that this is a very big problem with the Ford Fusion I hope this problem is resolved soon and my car is either repaired or replaced I need my car to get back and forth to work ! I also feel that I should be reimbursed once my vehicle is repaired and for the rental of another vehicle to get back and forth to work as I can no longer drive my car due to this safety hazard.

I was driving at approx. 45 mph when vehicle experienced an almost total loss of power and the engine shuddered to a stop. Instrument panel indications were a "wrench" and steady engine light. I was able to restart and the car and drive a mile to my home there were no warning lights when starting the car the next day, however about 1.5 mi. From home the same exact indications and conditions returned when I accelerated from 45 to 50 mph. Again the "wrench" and engine light illuminated. A restart allowed me to drive home during which time the engine light was illuminated steady. The condition recurred an additional two times during the short drive home. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis and repair on Monday. I was not told of the extensive history of similar problems with my vehicle, but was only advised that the "throttle body" was carbonned up" and needed to be replaced or cleaned, the dealer reported that throttle bodies were on backorder and said they cleaning mine should correct the problem. I elected to have them clean the throttle body. After the maintenance was allegedly completed I was driving home after picking up the vehicle, when, within only 1/2 mi. Of the dealership, the vehicle again experienced the same near total loss of power. I was able to pull off the road and restart the engine. I pulled out into traffic on a very busy thoroughfare to return to the dealer when the car died again leaving me the middle of four lanes of opposing, fast-moving traffic. I felt very unsafe. After a brief internet search I discovered this to be a common occurrence with my vehicle and I suspect it is more widespread than what has been reported to date.

Vehicle completely lost power while driving and virtually shut down while driving on a major highway. I brought the vehicle to lamarque Ford and was told that it was the throttle body. Last week, I was again getting on the interstate and the same thing happened. This time I have 40300 miles on the vehicle. I was told that it would not be covered because the vehicle was out of warranty and the parts warranty was only good for a year. In addition, I was told that the part is on back order and it will take 2 to 3 weeks for the dealership to get the part. This is very well known with this car and a major safety issue. I am afraid to drive this car since it just completely shuts down and hesitates to start back up. It has left me stranded many times.

The car looses power suddenly and without warning. Pressing on the accelerator gives no result. The engine is running, but I can't give it any gas. I have to coast to the side of the road, turn off the ignition, then restart the car. At that point it starts pretty hard, but will usually be ok. A wrench light shows up when it happens, but is gone when I restart the engine. My Ford dealership has looked at it twice. The second time, we decided to replace the throttle body. Now I'm told that the manufacturer isn't releasing the part until mid-July. I have to drive an unsafe vehicle for another 5 weeks while we wait for the part. I'm very concerned about the safety of my family and myself since this has occurred 9 times. Two of these occurrences placed us in very dangerous situations. 1) busy 4 lane road with no shoulder and an incline caused me to shut it down and put on my flashers in the middle of the road. 2). on a 70mph hwy with a semi-truck approaching quickly behind me and road construction on the shoulder leaving a drop off.

While driving and making a transition from the 101 ca fw to the 110 santa monica, I proceeded to give the car more gas to get up to speed of the current traffic flow but my car lost all acceleration. A little wrench light started flashing but the car was quickly slowing down. The cars started idling heaving but still no acceleration. I quickly punched my hazard as I had my 3 children in the car with my and traffic was coming. I was able to make it to the first lane to try to exit the freeway. The car literally rolled to exit off 9th street and just glided down the off-ramp. A very terrifying experience as cars had to take evasion actions to avoid rearending me. I was able to pull the car over safe on the first available street. I put the car in park it started rattling harder. I then shut off the engine, turned everything off (air/radio) and unplugged my phone charger. I waited about 3 minutes and then started the car up again like nothing. I proceeded to take side street. It was about 2 weeks later very next day the car started up as normal but on my way to work while in the process of getting into the freeway and as began to give the car gas to merge in I lost all acceleration again. The little wrench light came and the hard rattling started but this time the engine light came on. Husband drove it back to the dealer at 5mph rattling and all an we were told it was the throttle. The dealer said it would take 10 business day to get the part and replace it so a rental was provided. The very next day dealer said to pick up car as the throttle had been drained and reset not replaced. Not sure I understand why they are not fixing the car by replacing the part if so many issues are being reported. Refusing to pick up car till part is replaced and they can guarantee me this issue wont recur.

Selling / servicing dealer began advising of carbon build up in throttle body ~15000 mi. ~20000 mi with cruise control engaged engine lost power, service engine soon light and throttle control / transmission light both illuminated, vehicle rough idled. Shut off engine and restarted after ~ 30 seconds. Engine ran normally. Read/cleared dtc P2111. Reported to dealer on 07 Sept 2011 but was unable to diagnose any problem. Problem has been intermittent since. Due to battery failure prior to 35000 mi service (19 Nov 12) engine codes were lost. Dealer performed induction service. After 40000 mi service (24 May 13) had multiple instances of the above failure with dtc P2111 with increasing frequency. On 8 June 13 had 3 occurrences at vehicle speeds of less than 45 mph with one at less than 25 mph while accelerating (entering traffic). Vehicle was diagnosed by a different deal with a failed throttle body requiring replacement.

Was driving on the freeway with cruise control on and all of a sudden the car shook and there was a beep and then my wrench light came on and started losing speed fast. Was able to get over to the shoulder. I turned the car off and then turned it back on. Was able to drive a few hundred yards when it happened against this time the engine light came on and stayed on. I took it to the dealer and with in 30 minutes told me was the throttle body intake with an error code of P2111. Could have gotten bad quickly.

I was pulling out of my work parking lot, going less than 10mph, and I lost all acceleration in my car. I was able to pull to the curb, put it in park, shut it off, then restart. It started hard, and immediately had the "wrench" icon on. Again, I had no acceleration. I decided to try one more time to try to drive it to the dealership I bought the car from (less than 15 miles from my work). It started once more, a little easier, but still not "right." The engine light was on, but I was able to pull out and start driving. I made it about 6-7 miles, and once again, I lost all acceleration in the middle of a busy intersection. I was able to putter out of the intersection at an extremely low speed. I once again put it in park, turned off the engine, and tried one more time to start my car. Once again, it started very hard, but it allowed me to drive. I drove the remaining 6-7 miles to the dealership while the engine light was on. The part, I was told, is on national backorder, and am without my vehicle for 2 weeks. My car has less than 57,000 miles on it and have only had it a little over 2 years. [bought December 2010, incident occurred June 2013]. I even purchased the extended warranty but this particular repair is conveniently not covered by it.

My wife was driving home from work yesterday evening at highway speed (65mph) when the car stalled and wrench icon came on. Could not accelerate but thankfully able to coast across two lanes on a busy highway at rush hour to get to shoulder! car was jerking as it came to a stop. Turned the engine off, waited a few minutes, turned engine back on and car was ok again. Unfortunately this wasn't the first time; there have been at least 5 other instances. First time was approx 9 months ago (before warranty was up). Brought the car to dealer, they plugged it into their computer and got no error codes so "no problem" detected. Now warranty is up I wonder how much this is gonna cost!! furthermore, the car battery went dead couple of weeks ago; that's only 3 and 1/2 years old. Seems odd.

At 1605 while driving through an intersection, the car lost forward motion and stalled. The wrench light came on. When the car was turned off and back on, which was slow, the wrench light went off. Was able to drive home without further incident. The next morning at 0645, driving 45mph, the car again lost power/forward motion, stalled and wrench light appeared. Was able to restart the car and drove directly to the dealer service dept. Both times the car was restarted, the wrench light disappeared. The dealership cannot replicate the problem and cannot find an error code. This appears to be a known issue with the 10-11 models based on forums online from customers across the us. This is a major safety concern. I do not want to be driving 75mph on the interstate with my family and the car lose power and get hit by an 18-wheeler and die. The dealer claims they are 99.9% sure it is the throttle body, but will not replace it because they cannot locate an error code. If this many cars are having the same issue, they need to recall this part and quickly!

My purchased my car with 25 miles on it in 2010 and the first time was in 2013 Jan, with about 35000 miles on it when I was in heavy baton rouge traffic pulling onto the street and my car lost power and would not accelerate. The wrench light appeared, I managed to pull back off the road and turned the car off. After looking in my manual I saw that it could possible be a throttle problem. I started the car back up and it drove normally. I had Ford dealership inspect the vehicle which they said it didn't appear to have any problem. However I am registering a complaint because I thought I was purchasing a reliable vehicle. Losing power is a very serious problem and could cause accidents. Ford please recall. Why should the customer be responsible for a defective part, why is Ford not standing behind it quality vehicles?

Driving home from work going about 60 mph and the wrench light came on unexpectedly and my car stopped taking any gas. The throttle stopped working completely and I just barely made it to the shoulder before my car stopped completely on a busy highway. Was towed to the dealership where no one was there to look at it because it was about 6pm. Went back the next day and was told it's the throttle body and it would be ordered on Monday. I received a call Monday morning stating the piece would be in the next evening and to drop my car off Wednesday. I take my car back on Wednesday morning and have someone at my work pick me up. They failed to tell me this before leaving but the piece is on back order and they have no idea when it will come in to be fixed... after I was already at work! what poor customer service! now I have to drive a car that could fail and stop accelerating at any moment because Ford doesn't know how to take care of their customers properly. This part should be recalled if this many people are having issues that the part is on back order and you have people driving with vehicles that could just stop working at any time and any speed. It's completely unprofessional.

Driving approximately 35 mph while changing lanes and car lost power; wrench indicator did appear. Third instance of this happening - first two incidents occurred in first year of owning vehicle; wrench indicator did not appear in these occurrences. Vehicle currently being serviced for this problem as well as recurring lag in acceleration. This vehicle has also been serviced in the past for the aforementioned issues as well as: Jerk and clunk when reversing, unexpected rev in rpms, and slipping when gears change. This is a Fusion with the 6F35 automatic transmission. As usual, dealer has said if the code doesn't register or if they can't recreate the issue when out for a test drive then they will have to note it as no problem found.

I was driving down the road at 45 mph and the engine stalled. It was very dangerous but I did not get into an accident. I waited a few minutes and started the car back up and it worked fine for about two miles and did the same thing again. I found out through Ford that it was the throttle body and even the dealership admitted it was becoming a big problem. The part is back ordered for a month and it was not covered under warranty. Ford should admit the problem and recall the part before someone gets really hurt.

Vehicle had no throttle response, and had to coast to a stop. Incident happened many times prior to the date shown, but did not have specific date and mileage. In conducting web research, the problem is endemic with many Ford production years and models, and Ford has thus far refused to issue a recall, or to provide any out-of-warranty relief. According to my research, the part involved is a "throttle body, " and there have been at least 9,000 complaints about this issue. This is an extremely dangerous situation since the car randomly stops, and the only known remedy is to stop the car, wait a time, and then restart it. To the best I can find out, the throttle body is part of the power train, which is why that description was chosen'.

This has been a recurring problem for some time and on June 2nd it happened to me 9 times during a 20 mile trip. While traveling down the road, doesn't matter what speed/accelerating/decelerating, the wrench light will come on and I will lose all throttle control. I have to pull to the side of the road and when I do the vehicle shakes viciously. Turn the car off, then back on and it starts with a sluggish start. The vehicle will run for a little bit then repeat this cycle. The throttle body is the problem and it is on national backorder! this needs to be a recall immediately because I can easily see someone making a left turn loose the throttle and get hit by on oncoming vehicle.

Driving 45 miles per hour, when car just started shaking then stopped, glided over to breakdown lane. Car started again after a minute or so went on our way. Next day car stopped again, twice. Took it into Ford dealership. They said it was the throttle body and is on back order but we can clean it, they did and charged $250 for service. Well it is happening again and again. We bought this car brand new in 2010 for our retirement car, it has only 38000 miles. We are afraid to take long trips, so we are stuck to home with only grocery store and other runs. What a retirement!!!!!!!!! we traded in a 2003 Crown Victoria, Ford of course. My first car was a 1962, galaxie 500 and have had Ford ever since, can send you pictures of all our Ford. Never had a Ford with a problem, ever, talk about scary, we are in out upper 60S and driving this car is so really scary. We do not need to have or cause an accident. It keeps happening, sad for us.
