CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1998 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, peeling paint, & subframe rust. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.
The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.
Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.
Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

1) the emergency brake light came on and would not go off. A bump would finally make it go off. Paid to have fuel cap replaced, didn't help. Put fuel cap of 2000 Accord on, didn't help. Disabled sensor from cap, finally resolved light issue. Became invalid, and drove with brake on several times due to frequency of light being on. 2) SRS light came on without reason. Diagnostic checks (3) indicated nothing was wrong. Finally replaced the sensor and problem was resolved.

I was traveling approximately 35mph when a minivan turned in front of me. The front of my car slammed into the passenger side of the van. My insurance company and other drivers (accident was his fault) insurance company have determined that my car was totaled. My concern is that going at the rate of speed I was, and the damage to the front of my car (I have taken pictures)was great enough to have it totaled, the air bags should have deployed.
