CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1998 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, peeling paint, & subframe rust. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

This vehicle has been in the taken back to the dealer 4 times in a month and a half. The car shakes at high speeds and at idle (dealer says unbelivable shake is normal). When vehicle is driven for long periods of time it starts to vibrate and hesitate at high speeds the car becomes very hard to drive in the steering wheel, the whole suspension of the car is not secure. The brakes on the car have also been fixed or checked 4 times - it is very hard to break. Their is also a very hesitation in the engine when changing gears. It feels like there may be a transmission problem or an engine mount problem. The tires were replaced with used tires because manufacturer said that there was a flat spot on the tires. I was told that they were replacing the bad tires with new good tires (hoping that all the problems I was having was due to just the bad tires) they replaced them with used tires and didn't balance and align them (this is on the forth visit to the dealer). The problem is still there and getting worse. (dot number: M3ta tiresize: 195/65R15)
