CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

I was driving at a very slow speed of 15 mph on 11/21/14. I tapped a curb in a parking lot and the airbags deployed. An officer was called to the scene and was also surprised that the airbags deployed without any front-end damage or with such a slight impact. A mechanic also verified that there was no under-carriage damage and was also puzzled as to why this happened. We contacted Honda of America who was not only rude but was not the least bit helpful. We are hoping for some assistance, especially in light of the vast recall of the takata airbags which is what we have. Due to the age of our car, we dropped the collision coverage and the airbags were considered to be covered under collision. We are not financially able to purchase another vehicle and this is a very expensive repair. Thank you so much for any help you can give us.

This car's air bag warning light has been on for awhile. This exact make/model/year have been part of a very large recall but this specific car's VIN wasn't listed as part of it. I contacted Honda more than three weeks ago and was assigned a recall case manager. The case manager said they would add this VIN to the airbag recall. I've left at least three follow-up messages with the case manager since that time. The VIN is still not appearing in database. We've been unable to drive car for weeks as a result of safety concerns. There have been widely publicized news reports of people being seriously injured from Honda's faulty airbags. The local shop wants to charge us to inspect it, which seems inappropriate on a safety recall where people are being hurt.

My 16 year old daughter was coming home from school in the rain and was unable to stop in time to keep from rear ending another vehicle. Our car sustained extreme front end damage. Fortunately there were no injuries but the air bags did not deploy. The entire front end is crumpled and still the air bags did not deploy. I thought my daughter was driving a safe car.

The 1999 Honda Accord was at a red light. As I made a left turn, I could smell some type of fume coming from the steering. Then saw SRS light came on and within about 10 seconds, the driver's airbag deployed for no odd reason. The car as never been in any accident, all parts are original as day 1 when we bought it new. Honda dealership in renton said they did not find any electrical system in their test that could cause this malfunction, why it malfunction is still in the air? they are telling me to file a claim with my insurance company. Again, Honda said no reason why the bag deployed and no electrical malfunction. I want to report this so others will be safe.

I own a 4 cylinder 4 door 1999 Honda Accord LX. The SRS light came on without reason in June of 2009. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer 5 times. Each time they run a diagnostic test. The light will then turn off without illuminating the cause. Shortly after picking the car up from the dealer, the light will turn back on. The airbags will not deploy as long as the light is on. I bought a Honda because of the safety features. It makes no sense that they have a warranty on the seatbelts but not the airbags. The airbags have never been used. The dealer says that the only way to fix it is replace the airbags. This will cost close to $1000. I can't afford that. Even if I choose to start replacing the unit, it won't guarantee that the problem will be solved. They don't know the reason that the SRS light keeps coming on. It should be Honda's responsibility to fix this problem since it obviously wasn't caused by me, the consumer. This is not an isolated incident. There are hundreds of internet sites with consumers just like me complaining of the same problem. A link to one is www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/Accord/2001/seat_belts_air_bags/srs_light_is_on.shtml please make Honda do the right thing and keep their patrons safe.
