CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Honda Accord has several serious defects – poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

My Driver's side Visor made a crack noise when I was flipping it down. Not even taking out of its cage.

Really cheap materials or bad design. Now my visor (Driver's side) just hangs half the way.

Accord EX 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 17,000 miles

I bought the car with the understanding that I had a BUMPER TO BUMPER coverage up to 120000 miles or 8yrs, life time on the tenting, and I believe special coverage on the windshield.

I had issues with the cars tinting from day 1 and have taken it back 3 or 4 times. In that frustration I failed to remember to ask about getting the visor fixed because it was nothing major, just annoying (hung down about an inch). The visor broke w/in the first year I owned my 2009 Accord. Taking it in is a planned event as I had moved over 45 min away from the dealership. When I had multiple things go wrong I wrote them all down called and made an appointment for service. The power locks had failed, the keys for the keyless entry were not working, the battery was bad (2 yrs old), the tenting was still bad (which they tried to blamed on window vent visors, even though I explained that it was peeling BEFORE they were installed and I noticed the first time I rolled the window down after they tented it) and the visor was broke. I didn't realize that my car had 39000 miles which was 3000 over the factory warrantee. While he said the locks, keys and battery were covered under the extended warrantee the visors ($100+ to fix) and tenting (life time) were not. I have asked to have a supervisor call me so we will see.....

Don't get me wrong. I love my new 2010 Honda Accord XLE V6. I liked it so much, in fact, that I went ahead and paid for a few extra 'dealership installed accessories'. One of which was a back-up camera. BIG MISTAKE. It has rattled under the dash/steering column from the day that they installed it. I have had it into the dealership 4 times (in less than 2 months) to fix the noise (more like a popping/crackling noise) but to no avail. I will say this... the dealership has been exceptional. They have given me a loaner car each time I have had to leave it, and have been really nice (and empathetic) to the issue. The problem is that they just cannot find/fix the problem. Very frustrating, as I have only made 3 payments on this car. The noise is worse when the weather is colder (not sure why) but it is VERY annoying. Not what you would expect from Honda, and not what you want to ride around listening to when you have just bought a $31,000 car. Maybe I have just been spoiled by previous cars that I have owned (Lexus, Acura, Infiniti) as all of these cars had a FACTORY installed camera and I never had a problem with it, and NEVER had any problems with 'rattles'. But again, the dealership seems determined to make it right for me, so we'll see. UHG! FRUSTRATED!

The visor clip on the right side of the driver's visor broke. While the visor stayed in place, and it was covered under the warranty, it was surprising to see how cheap the plastic was that held the visor up there.
