CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Honda Accord has several serious defects – poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

At 12K miles, the local honda dealer said my rear brakes needs to be replaced and not covered under warranty. even tho on the diagnose report stats my rear brakes are at 7.5 and front brakes at 9.0. they don't dienied Honda has a problem with the rear brakes, but refuse to repair it under warranty, this is un-acceptable.

This is my 7th Honda made cars, never had problem when it's that new. Also, both my remote keyless entry starts to fail, they won't fix it either, keep telling me it's the battery running low. come on, my 2001 Acura TL's remote still on it's original battery. I did swap the batteries but the problem is still there. After I found this page, seeing a lot of people are having same problem as I have, I am so disappointted...

Well, if Honda doesn't act quickly on those issues, next time around when I need to buy a car, Honda will not be on my shopping list. that's my promiss to Honda.

Well, after finding out several others with the Honda Accord have the same problem, I went to have my car repaired at the local Honda Dealership in Clovis, Ca. Well, first thing when I mentioned Service Bulletin 09-096, the Service Man "Rudy" was rude and argumentative. When I mentioned the brakes were horrible and the problems reported by others, including the fact my vehicle was under warranty, Rudy told me it was not, they don't work for free, and I should read the bulletin. I asked for a copy since Honda conveniently forgot to send any notice. It appears the matter is a Class Action Lawsuit under "Settlement." The brakes sound like I'm dragging an aluminum boat down the road. How pathetic is that!

I have owned 4 Honda vehicles in the past and I am really surprised at how secretive this company has been, especially with a problem such as brakes. We all know what happens if brakes do not operate properly and I find it really disgusting they have not been forthright with their customers. So, I have decided I will NEVER buy a Honda again. I used to recommend Honda, not anymore.

I'm so pissed off I cant express in words how angry I am. You pay 24+ thousand for a vehicle which is supposed to be reliable and you assume the warranty purchased with the vehicle will be honored. Should have known better. From now on, I will not recommend Honda to anyone, in fact, based on my experience, including RUDE RUDY, I will campaign heavily to dissuade others from buying a Honda. Apparently they do not care enough about their product to simply take care of a widespread problem. What the hell is a bumper to bumper warranty good for if they won't abide by it. There is only one thing they care about and thats MONEY! Sorry HONDA, you won't get another penny from me. I will fix my brakes myself since your parts are SH$T anyway. Customers should not have to jump through hoops to be provided what they paid for.

ATTENTION: HONDA has officically been placed on the top of my SH$T LIST.

Warning: Avoid buying any Honda product, they are snake oil Salesmen. Oh yeah, RUDY at Honda North in Clovis, thanks for nothing you OGRE.

First, let me thank zipmandan (post #772) for his post. This, "Original brake kit part number 43022-TA0-A00 -> 2nd kit 43022-TA0-A51 -> 3rd kit 43022-TA0-A70," was all I needed when I went to the dealership.

I had the same back brake issue as others who posted here. Loud screeching noise from rear brakes. The noise was intermittent but would occur sometimes when braking, some times when passing over "rolling" bumps and at other times the noise would stay on for minutes at a time. Applying the brakes when the noise was constant would change the pitch as would lightly applying the e-brake.

I had the brakes checked at a local garage and the mechanic told me to take it to the dealership because the wear on the back breaks unusual. I brought the service bulletin 09-096 as well as the info above about the changes in the brake kit for the rear. The dealer replaced both front and rear pads as well as re-surfaced the rotors. The confirmed the new kit for the back brakes when I showed them the part #.

They did all the work under warranty at no charge. I had 28000 miles on an 09 Accord LX. The service manager as well as the service tech acknowledged the issue. They replaced the front brakes under the 09-096 and cited a "manufacturers defect" for the rear.

Honda is certainly aware of this issue and the dealership was top notch in addressing the problem.

On a side note, I also received two new keys under the service bulletin 09-099. My keyless remote did not function correctly from the day I got the car. The service manager asked if I had any other issues to address and I mentioned the keys in passing. When they were done I had two new perfectly function keys as well as brand new brakes all the way around.

MY CONCERN IS NOT ONLY THE BRAKES BEING AN ISSUE AND THAT HONDA SHOULD DO A RECALL SINCE THEY HAVE A SOLUTION, BUT ALSO THE DEALERSHIPS. THEY ARE AMAZING TO TELL SOMEONE THAT "IT IS NORMAL TO REPLACE BRAKE PADS!" MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 13000 AND HOW CAN THE BACK BRAKES BE WORN OUT ALREADY. AFTER CHECKING WITH ANOTHER HONDA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT THEY STATE ALL 08 AND 09 HONDA ACCORDS HAVE THIS ISSUE AND HONDA HAS A REPLACEMENT PAD AVAILABLE. OF COURSE IT COSTS YOU AS A CONSUMER! THAT IS RIDICULOUS. WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS TOYOTA, NISSAN, AND HONDAS ARE HAVING IS ANYONE NOT STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE TO MAKE SURE OUR CARS ARE SAFE AND FIXED AT THEIR COST. I DID NOT MAKE THE CAR I BOUGHT IT! HONDA YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED AND STANDING BEHIND YOUR PRODUCT AND REPUTATION! FIX OUR CARS!

Our brakes to our 2009 honda had been sqealing from almost the start of owning the car. at 11740 miles we had our car inspected , our rear brakes were worn out . Our mechanic told us to contact honda dealership because this is a big problem, honda should cover the cost of replacing the brakes. the dealership told us that they would replace the pads if we were under 12000 miles. now im afaid to drive the car fearing that I am in danger because of the brakes not working properly, I have 4 kids that i drive around constantly !!!!! Will the brakes fade and fail after the back brakes heat up due to a design flaw ? the other problem the mechanic showed us is the tires are wearing out unevenly front and rear drivers side wearing quicker than front and rear passenger side. I thought the tires should always wear two front and to back together ! could this be due to the rear design in the brakes??

I bought 5 hondas in the last 10 years i live for my honda really no other car would compair !!! i am so upset and fell totally let down from honda all for the price of 29,000.00

i could not have invested my money in a worst place!! no more honda's for my family of 7

2009 Honda Accord EX - Honda will replace worn out brakes with "redesigned" brakes for free under warranty for 36 month/36,000 miles. They know they have a problem with the rear brakes dragging and wearing prematurely. There is bulletin out on it now and Honda will replace worn rear brakes with the "redesigned" brakes for free at no cost (do not let the dealer charge you a dime for any of the work including turning the rotors) . I just had my rears replaced yesterday after my rears worn out after only 24,000 miles. They added a spring to keep the brakes separated on the new design and to keep them off the rotor.

The brakes on my 2009 Accord Cpe have squealed since I got the car. I have almost 31,000 miles on it now so I guess I have learned to deal with it. It is embarrassing! I figured it was just the kind of brakes on the car. I know what a fight you have to deal with to get the Honda dealerships to fix anything. I had a 2006 Civic and had the same problem as everyone else with the tires roaring and pre-mature wear. It took 6 months of being lied to by the dealership and then finally complaining to Honda out in CA directly to get them to agree to fix the problem for free (even though I had to pay for new tires). I quickly turned the car in for the Accord. Love the car, hate the squeaky tires!

I bought my brand new car a Honda Accord EXL V6 with Navigation in January 2009. I am a first time Honda owner and now I am a last time Honda owner. I was disappointed that the dealer can't fix something so simple the first time I took it in. I took the car home, and the next day it was squeaking again. I called American Honda to report the problem, they told me call the dealer. I called the dealer, they said "Honda knows the problem, we can't do anything more about it. Wait for Honda to call". Sounds like no body wants to take responsibility.

I am waiting waiting, nothing happens. It could be worse, it could be a Toyota.

I own 09 Accord that I bought Jan 2009. I noticed the front brakes squeal right from the first week. As I am not the primary driver for that car I notice it pretty often when I drive. Sometimes I do find that it’s not consistent. I took it to the dealer once and they did provide me the information that it is a known issue and Honda is working on it. But how long is Honda going to work on it? It just seems ridiculous.

Brakes squeal like mad since the day I bought it. Brake pads on all 4 corners have been replaced once and the brake rotors have been turned TWICE already!! No effect at all. Honda says they "are aware of the problem, we're working on a solution" and then they told the dealer to make no more repairs to the car. This was back in 2008 and no fix is on the horizon. Combined with the fact that the rear pads wear out way too fast, I'd say Honda's "legendary reliability" is worth about as much as Toyota's these days. Given how many complaints about Honda's brakes are posted all over the internet, I don't understand how they can get away without doing a recall. Honda is ridiculous! I'll be telling everyone I know to avoid Honda from now on.

I purchased my 2009 Accord EX-L Coupe w/Navigation in May 2009. It's now close to ten months later and I only have 6,000 miles on it. The brakes started squeaking off and on since day one. It didn't bother me at first, but then it got annoying. I finally called the dealer. They said it was normal. Then I called American Honda and let them know what was happening so I'd have something documented--you should ALL do this!. Then I read/heard about all the complaints about the brakes (or lack thereof).

After doing a little research, I found an attorney who has ALREADY filed a class-action lawsuit. I entered my information about my car and problems/issues. They called me back and told me that my name is on the "list". They answered any questions I had and told me I'd get emails or phone calls informing me of any new information. They've been very, very helpful. So, to help you with your stress and frustration, here is the link to the website. I'm sure this will make you feel a little better. Let me know what happens and good luck! :)

Traded in my incredible E39 BMW because the geniuses at work convinced me that as it aged I would have terrible problems with it (keeping in mind I was at $79 out of pocket for its service to that point. Shows how bright I am.) I leased the "best, bulletproof ,can't go wrong ever, never will regret, all the magazines love car" on the market. A week off the lot, the car sounds like a mid-80's Audi trying to come to a halt. I try to time my stop light stops to be beside a clunker, so they get blamed for the horrible sound.

Also, with about 780 miles on the clock, the "engine is about to explode light" pops on, of course in the bad part of town. After getting a stern telephone lecture from the service manager that if I was lying about the warning light, I would have to pay for the flatbed, I get it towed to the dealership. Same service manager called to say that I was off the hook for the flatbed, but they had no idea why my car cried SOS and if it comes on again, I should ignore it - except if the problem is real, then I should stop. Oh, and if I guess wrong and keep driving it with the light on and it does fly apart, the warranty will be voided...but the light probably means nothing. Luckily, the problem has not repeated.

Honda has lost my business. I'm already counting down the months when I can unload this rolling symbol of regret. Their dealership's salesman looked my wife and I in the eyes when asked if the model/year had any known service issues and lied - about brakes!!! Really wish the leadership from Japan would step in on this one and do the right thing, it's apparent that Honda USA will not.

First my "tale of woe"!

For the past 10 months I have been just another faceless, dissatisfied first time Honda Accord owner whose brakes squealed since the day I pulled out of the dealership in Charlotte, NC in February '09. In July '09, after several visits to dealerships in Charlotte (by me) and Birmingham, AL (by my son), I was given a copy of Tech Line Summary Article ATS090503 re. Front Brake Squeal, and advising the dealer that replacing pads and/or rotors would not give lasting repair for 2008-2009 Accord brake noise. The service manager was sympathetic and polite but made sure I knew his hands were tied about any repair until Honda re-engineered the brake pads, and cautioned me about voiding some nebulous warranty if I decided to go the after-market route. In addition to hounding the dealership service department I registered my complaint with American Honda and spent several hours mostly trying to talk to people who had little-to-no command of the English language. I think that registering my complaint with American Honda was supposed to make me feel like I was making progress but, in reality, it only proceeded to frustrate me further. Every time I called (and I called several times) I got a different customer service rep (and I use that term generously) and had to start the process all over again. If you haven't gone through the registration fiasco I recommend you skip that part of the ordeal. Try banging your head against a wall instead. At least it will feel good when you stop and, by the way, your brakes will still squeal!!

Now the good news....

My son found Carcomplaints.com several months ago and I've taken solace on a weekly basis knowing that I wasn't the only poor schlep in this country trying to win this unwinnable wrestling match. You can imagine my glee on January 4, 2010 when I actually saw that Mr. "tmoguy" from Mobile, AL was contacted by his dealership and had replacement brakes installed with immediate resolution of the problem. I called my Charlotte service manager and was told to bring the car in immediately as he had limited replacement parts. That sounded good but, unfortunately, my Accord is with my son in Birmingham. After several phone calls, e-mails, faxes and crossed-fingers he was able to bring the car to the dealership in Birmingham and have replacement pads (#1-45022-TEO-999) installed today. He's driven all of about 3 miles home from the dealership without as much as a peep out of the brakes. The early returns are good but, literally, we'll keep our ears to the track. I'm glad I didn't give up on this crusade so you shouldn't either. Me and "tmoguy" had our brakes replaced in Alabama so there has to be hope for other states too. I've "lurked" on several websites over the past few years but never posted. It feels good to blow off this steam. I hope this rant helps you find a way to get some satisfaction and stop every car and pedestrian within a 3 mile radius from staring at you when you step on the brake pedal on your shiny new Accord.. Good luck!!

I am so upset, I paid $34,000 for this car because of the "navi". I took my car in for an oil change, and they claimed they told me about the rear brakes, which they didn't. They then wanted to waive the parts and charge me for labor!!!!!! Ridiciculous! I think we all need to do a class action lawsuit. These are not cheap cars. Then they had the nerve to ask me to replace them with more of these jacked up brakes. I'll pass!!! I bought ater market brakes. I looked at is though they should have sucked it up and just replaced them for free. This is unheard of. On top of it, this is my 4th honda accord at the same dealership. What does everyone think we should do?? Oh, and they said the backs wore sooner than the front because the fronts are 10 MM and the backs are 9 MM, yet my fronts appear to be almost new!
