CarComplaints.com Notes: It's rare when a newer vehicle has defect trends, & the 2017 Honda CR-V has at least two — overfilled oil levels with a gas smell, & heat not working.
Both problems affecting the Honda CR-V's 1.5L "Earth Dreams" engine appear to be related to cold-climate regions.
CR-V owners also report no heat even after warming up their CR-Vs for 30 minutes — not even enough to defrost the windshield. So far, there has been no fix from Honda for this issue.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
-I noticed oil/gas leak on the engine that slowly drips under. The engine oil smells gas, oil level goes up. - lane departare goes off when car is idle for more than 15mins (randomly) - navigation/audio acts up -changes screen and nonstop beeping. You need to turn the engine off to stop it-reset.
Broken shift button: I was driving this car and the shift button pop out and fell under the driver seat. It created an unsafe condition since I could not put the car to park or shift any gear. Many drivers also experience the same thing. The button is connected to the shift gear and it is made from a cheap piece of plastic. It costs $85 to replace at the dealer. Honda refuses to reimburse since the car has past its warranty. The car is at 50000 miles. I had to pick it up under the seat and use a hair band to keep it in place until it is repaired at the dealer.
When backing the Honda CR-V in reverse down my driveway, I touched the shift gear and proceeded to place the CR-V into drive. The Honda CR-V went into the D position, and I saw a small piece of the knob fall off. I immediately pulled over and tried the put the cr- V into park, however I could not. I had to place the emergency parking break on. This was a very scary experience!
Shift knob button fell off as I was going to put my car in park. I was in the middle of an intersection. Very scary moment because I didnt know where that little piece fell. I put a hairband to 'keep it in tact' while I had to take it to dealer to fix which was 5 days later
I had just come off the highway exit on to the city street. I was increasing my speed and moving over to the left. Just as I got into the left lane the CR-V suddenly started to flash break on the dash in front of me and I could feel the vehicle break hard on it's own. I was lucky no one was behind me. There was no person/vehicle in front of me that I would need to brake for. I took the vehicle the next day to the Honda garage and they could not find anything. There was no fault code in the system nor could the technician duplicate this issue. I was lucky that this happen at night without much traffic if this would have happen going to work on the highway someone could have been seriously injured or killed. I have seen other CR-V owners report the same thing happen on forums. I am very weary now to drive to work with this issue. I used to love my CR-V now I don't want to drive it but have no choose as it is my only transportation to work.
There is an issue with the dash display. The display, intermittently, when I start it, see image 1, does not show the descriptive information in the middle of the display. The car starts, the messages about brake is on, and mitigiation being on, show up, and then the center of display blacks out. Sometimes, it stays on, and then when I release the brake, it disappears. See image 2, that is after I restarted it after it had been running for a while I have further tested this. If I start the car with the brake off, then the display seems to come up (I start car, with brake on, in garage, displsy does not come up, I release brake, then shut down the car. I then restart it, brake is still off, and then the gas milleage display comes on, then notification about road mitigation; then road mitigation disappears, and the mileage and fuel display remains on) my concern is whether this reflects other smoldering computer issues that could affect the safety of the car. I have reported this to Honda in late 2018, but all they suggested was taking this to a repair shop to let them look at it. But I do not believe this is a my car issues, this is a broader computer issue. Then, they issued a software update to address the gas-in-oil issue, and the display issue seemed to disappear for a while, but now it has recurred. This time it seemed to start after I had connected a phone to the android system through the smart cable, but after disconnecting the phone, the issue persists.
Shift knob on stick to set car to park, drive, or reverse broke. It does not stay in slot. This caused an issue when I tried to put car into park and realized the button popped out. Car was stationary and I was able to put car in neutral, find the button and push in, but still a danger.
Very strong continuous smell of gasoline inside the car coming from the front engine area of the car when starting it and the smell circulates in the car while driving it. Also smell gas from the car for a long while, after parking it in my enclosed garage. This is a serious health, safety and evironmental issue. The smell makes me nauseous. Just bought this 2017 Honda CRV three months ago, took this vehicle back to dealer, he said thehonda factory doesn't have any fixes for this issue. Untrue per data found online which states this issue has been taken care of per a recall of these vehicles in Canada and for some states but not yet in all usa states, including my state. I hope this vehicle is recalled and the issue fixed very soon for our health and safety.
Out of warranty but gear shift button has been "sticking" for 1 month and then "broke off" today. Car only has 40,000 miles on it and now cannot drive it due to inability to shift gears.
On early Oct 2017, automatic braking system applied (slammed) for no apparent reasons at 45 mph. No cars were in front and luckily none was behind. Happened on mid day, clear and sunny day. There were several occasions that brake warning activated while no pending traffic. Went to dealer to checkup and was told "never heard of such issues with this brake issues". it totally did not make sense that the adviser recommended turning off brake sensing feature!? on a separate issue, front adaptive shutter malfunction while was on the highway causing loss of power. System reset itself after pulling off the road shutoff and restart the engine. Dealer said they were not able to replicate this issue and found no faulty problems.
My vehicle's warning lights are on for all features, including lane assist, stability, collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, tire pressure monitoring and many others. These features are currently not working. The first time the issue occurred was immediately upon starting the vehicle. I've taken it to two different dealers three times. The third time, I was told there was a problem with a fuel valve -- part of a Honda "campaign, " whatever that means -- and that replacing/repairing the issue could take up to 60 days. I was dismissed from the dealer and told that the issue would not make my car stop working, and that I would be contacted when a part arrived. Meanwhile, my car is idling rough and I smell gas upon starting it.
Gear shift button (you depress this to shift gears) popped off, no warning, for no reason. I was shifting into reverse, when I released the button, it flew off. I had to keep my foot on the brake to find the button and stick it back in. It is now loose and will not stay on/in. This could be very dangerous if a car is moving and it pops off...
The shift gear/shaft button fell apart/broke off all of a sudden, while car was in motion. This rendered the vehicle inoperable as you cannot shift gears. I was unable to figure a safe solution while diving. After talking with others apparently this manufacturer defect is happening to CRV owners. I contacted Honda and their reply was that if it is not under warranty they are not responsible for repairs. My concern is that if this occurs while driving it can cause an accident and or serious injuries.
The gear shift knob popped out of the shifter while I was in reverse and I couldn't take my foot off the break to find it or I would have hit something. Luckily I found it and shoved it back in to be able to get into park but it still regularly pops out leaving the shifter stuck in gear.
While driving on the highway at 65mph the silver button on the gear shift spontaneously broke off the handle used to shift between park, neutral and drive. No one was touching the shifter at that time. This was a very distracting event -- I suddenly saw the broken button. Trying to figure out what was "going on" distracted me from looking at the road, with the associated risk of loosing "situational awareness". I was fortunate in that I rapidly refocused on the road and no accident occurred. The person in the front-passenger seat figured out what had happened. I talked to 2 dealers and they indicated that they have seen this with several other crvs. Based on my experience and the dealer feedback, this is not an isolated incident. This is a manufacturer defect that impacts multiple cars; the distraction created when it happens on the highway can result in someone getting into a potentially fatal accident if this defect is not proactively addressed. I reported it to Honda America. They told me that they will report it to Honda, but made no commitment to addressing it or getting back to me on their decision. A proactive recall and repair of the problem needs to happen before someone gets hurt.
Gasoline in engine. I have discussed this issue with dealer but no response. I also wrote this entity but I have not received any knowledgement of this issue. I do regular oil change and the oil always smells like gas just before I take it I. to have oil changes regularly (3500 or 5000 miles). Plus I have yet in the 18 months I've owned the CR-V to get an oil chance notification. I want the issue with this/my CR-V be addressed and corrected! I would like to receive an reply that will help me with this issue!
