CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

The car will not accelerate at a stop light, or when I am trying to make a turn, it will not properly accelerate, even if I hold down the accelerator all the way down, and then it will jerk and accelerate again. On highway, it will suddenly lose power: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?V=gxr7E0qwoka this is what happens to my vehicle, if I press on the accelerator all the way, it does not accelerate and instead only goes up a bit of RPM and doesn't go up all the way.

These are all of the problems I'm experiencing; loss of power, transmission jerking, transmission slipping, cvt coolant hose leaks and failures. All of these problems happened when I was in motion on major highways and my car couldn't go over 35mph. Not only was I endanger my child was also in the back seat to do the fact my car could not accelerate at all!! I've been experiencing these problems for some time now but the loss of power was the last straw. And then I start doing research on my car and find out Nissan has had problems with the cvt transmissions and I want to know why their isn't some type of recall on these unsafe vehicles. Its a danger to my family and the other drivers on the road because you never know when it is going to happen!!!

On 07/09/2019, while driving at highway speeds of 60 mph - 65 mph, traveling up a slight overpass, the cvt transmission on my 2013 Nissan Sentra sl shifted, to what seems to me, to be, the 1st gear. The RPM immediately shot up to 7,000 RPM. I immediately released the accelerator, but it continued to rev around 5,000-7,000 RPM. I was lucky the vehicle behind me swerved to avoid hitting me. The torque alone brought my vehicle to 40mph, I came to a stop, placed it in park, and turned of my vehicle on the side of the freeway. This occurred at the junction on interstate - 45 South, on 2nd right lane for exits to 610 - East and West. This incident occurred within.5 - 1 miles of these coordinates on I-45 South: 29.820626, -95.378574. This issue occurred again on the same day traveling North on the airline hov lane. I've attached a screen shot of a video I was able to take during the second incident of the that day. Vehicle in motion at high speeds 60-65 mph in houston tx on interstate-45 South. The vehicle was traveling up a slight over pass. However, this same issue has occurred on a flat road traveling at lower speeds in situations of stopping then accelerating to higher speeds (35 mph or 45 mph). It's sluggish to shift gears with a jerk motion when it finally does shift. The unsafe condition was introduced when the transmission caused my car not to accelerate on the houston high, in a situation where cars are merging or switching lanes to take exits. I spoke to a local Nissan dealer, and they invoiced me at $4,000-$5,000 dollars. I inquired a bit more, and they let me know that I'm "lucky, " as they have had Sentra's come in with only 30,000 miles. I also spoke with Nissan customer affairs, explained the issues to see if there was any warranty I was unaware of, but none. Sentra sl, 91,480 miles. (issues with transmission occurred even at 39K)

'takata recall' when I recently got this car, at first I knew something was off because it wouldn't accelerate like a normal car and it wouldn't go pass by 30mph on the freeway. I let a couple of days passed by until the last day before I told the dealer, I was an entire day turning my car on and off thinking that it will stop glitching but I was on the freeway and I was causing a lot of traffic due to it's malfunction. After that, they took it to the dealer to get another transmission or system called the cvt transmisson, they actually did change the transmisson and after that it was working well but wasn't satisfied with it, it started loosing power and there's times when it doesn't want to accelerate and I have to push my foot all the way in which is scary because there's times where it just throws me off since I have no idea when it wants to accelerate like a normal car. Overall, they changed the cvt transmisson and I felt that it got worst and now I just don't feel comfortable with this car, I don't feel safe with it but the sad part is that I'm still paying for the car.

While traveling on I-95 in miami at 55 mph, my car suddenly stopped accelerating and wouldn't pass 20 mph. I pushed down on the gas peddle and nothing would happen. I was extremely lucky to be on the middle lane and quickly shifted over to the far right on the emergency lane and turned off the car. I turned it back in and it worked fine. I didn't use the car for two days, and then when I tried again, it was giving the same issue where the car wouldn't accelerate and was making a weird noise which I never expierned before. I took to my trusted mechanic and he advised it was a cvt issue. I had to get the car towed to a certified Nissan dealership as Nissan agreed to consider possible financial assistance. Upon completion it was confirmed it was a cvt transmission issue and it would cost about $5,000 to repair with labor costs. Nissan has to given me back my car and it's now the 20th of February. My car has 99,450 miles, and has been in excellent condition with my maintenance. It's scary and unfortunate that we have been sold a defective car and Nissan won't admit to it. There's a class action lawsuit open and still in court. I got an attorney involved who has taken up my case for further action against Nissan. Consumer should be advised to stop driving this car asap! I am now looking to get a new car as I don't feel safe anymore driving this and I need a reliable and safe vehicle for work.

  • 74,000 miles
The vehicle was in motion at 65 mph on the expressway in heavy traffic. It steadily began to decelerate, giving no warning, with no lights on the dash or noises. As I attempted to accelerate, the vehicle would not respond to accelerator pedal input, and I had traffic moving at a very high speed and was almost hit by another car attempting to get onto the very slim shoulder at low speed. The car had 74,000 miles on it at the time of the incident, and had excellent care taken of it, including its recommended maintenance. It was purchased brand new in December 2012, and I am the only owner. It was towed to the dealership, where I was told I was out of the 60,000 mile warranty. Initially quoted $4500 just to get the car back in working order, it took Nissan Consumer Affairs two weeks to arrive at a figure just short of $1100 to get my car running again. A transmission should not fail in a vehicle at all, let alone one that new, especially considering the level of care that it was given. This is a potentially very serious safety issue, as I almost had nowhere safe to pull over. If this had been the multi-lane highway I was on minutes before, I may have not been over to reach the shoulder and could have been hit or involved in a serious accident. Upon doing some research I found this issue has been encountered by a large number of Nissan owners with continuous variable transmissions and the company has done little or nothing about it, and have attempted to minimize the problem. By extending "financial assistance" down to $1100, in my view, they are admitting guilt as to this problem, as companies do not give money away. I feel cheated, and now do not feel safe driving the vehicle I had paid $21,000 not very long ago.

My 2013 Sentra it began to jerk and lose power while driving. The car revs up to 5000rpms went back down to between 3000 and 4000rpms. I drove to the nearest auto shop aamco. The mechanic said to see if it was under warranty. He said there were known problems with the cvt. We drove home and I called Nissan (8883880318) and spoke to a representative. He asked for the VIN and told me there was a "campaign" on this car. I asked him was a campaign and a recall the same thing, he said they were the same, different words.. he told me the cvt needed to be reprogrammed. He gave me a dealership. I called, made an appointment for 9:00am this morning. We took the car in, was told the car had been reprogrammed. We drove away from the dealership, got about one block and the car began to jerk and lose power like before. We turned around and went back to the dealership. I told the representative the car was still jerking and losing power. She said I would have to pay $99 for a diagnostic test. I did not pay for the test because the Nissan representative on the phone told me the repair would be at no charge. When we got home, I called Nissan, again. I was told I could not talk to the representative I talked to yesterday. This time, I was told there was no warranty left because I had 82,000 miles on the car. He told me the warranty stopped at 60,000 miles. I told him the representative I spoke to yesterday told me it was covered and I had looked online and Nissan had added to the warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles. He said that is not for my car and I could join a class action lawsuit. I told him I don't want to join a class action lawsuit, I need my car repaired. Please hold Nissan accountable to fix these unsafe cars, because, Nissan knows there is a wide spread problem with the cvt's. this is unfair.

My vehicle has had ongoing issues with acceleration and the rpms going past what it should under normal circumstances. This issue occurs specifically when I accelerate. On January 21, 2018, as I was merging on to the highway trying to accelerate, my speed would not increase initially and my rpms were past 5. this is extremely dangerous and concerning as I was told by Nissan that my transmission is in proper working order after having been replaced once already. My car doesn't function properly and I went to a transmission specialist who also said that my transmission is slipping. I presented this information to the Nissan specialist who stated it wasn't and it is fine. However, I've had instances where the vehicle does not operate the way it should under normal conditions and prior to having transmission problems.

Car has only 13,987 original miles. While accelerating from a stop, accelerating from any speed, vehicle loses all throttle control / response, idle may hang at 3200 suddenly during acceleration then take 30-40 seconds to drop back to normal. You may or may not have warning lights and/or fault codes set. Transmission shifting is erratic or none at all (stays in high gear). Fault codes if any are most likely electrical circuit, low voltage type codes. Warning lights may be traction / stability control, check engine, ABS in any combination. The fault is moisture (water / condensation) collecting in a tail light and shorting the circuit which is connected to the engine / transmission electronics. The tail light may not have any sign of damage / cracks / holes but the water presence causing the short can damage or destroy the transmission if not corrected not to mention the possibility of an accident due to a stuck throttle at 3200 RPM in traffic. Nissan is aware of this issue but has no recall at this time (waiting for the accidents I guess)

While driving the car would lose acceleration. The first time it had happen it was around April 2017 on a hot day. I thought maybe me turning the air on plus with the heat that it was the reason for the malfuction, but then it did it again a few days later while I was turning onto a busy intersection. I took it to a close friend of mine to ask if he had any known solutions to why I am losing acceleration while driving. But he didn't know of any. So for a while it was driving normal...at least I thought. My daughter had used the vehicle and I forgot to tell her about the acceleration issue, but she almost got into an accident due to the lost of acceleration. I then started paying more attention and was going to take it somewhere professional to get it looked at.unfortunately I did not get it looked at fast enough as the acceleration went out again and caused me to have an accident. As I was driving and coming around a curve the acceleration once again left and as I have done in the past hit the pedal multiple times to try to get it to rev up so that I can drive. Only this time and after hitting the pedal multiple times it jerked and rev hard which startled me and I loss control of the car. My car flipped over 3 times. By the grace of god I survived. Puzzled and trying to get my self back on my feet I started to research what potentially could have been wrong with that car only to learn that I was not the only person who experienced this with Sentra. I am glad others was safe, but I also feel that when I purchased this car from carmax that any and all recalls should have been pointed out to me. Or at least something from Nissan due to me being a new owner pointing out any issues they had with these cars. This not only traumatized me it also cause me to be labeled with insurance compaines as (at fault) driver. Meaning my insurance payments have skyrocketed...updated 08/04/17 updated 08/07/17
