CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004 Nissan Xterra doesn't seem to have any problem trends. The only thing prospective owners should be aware of are the less-than-perfect (but acceptable) crash test ratings.
There are a very few transmission complaints, but nothing like the huge defect that shows up starting in with the 2005 model year.

While I was driving my rear driver's wheel snapped completely off the axle. Thank god I was driving in town and slowing down for a red light because I can only imagine what would have happened on the highway. Had to pay close to 500 for a tow truck to get it to the garage that covered my extended warranty. I have searched other complaints of people having similiar problems. The mechanic claimed he had no idea how that couldve happened.
