The same defect exists in the Pathfinder & Frontier as well. And according to the New York Times & a class action lawsuit, the defect actually extends through 2010 model year. More info here.

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph on normal road conditions. The contact had difficulty steering the vehicle and pulled over to the shoulder of the highway. There were no warning light indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The steering wheel was maneuvered to the left and right position. The vehicle resumed normal operation. However, the steering column was loose which resulted in the steering wheel to wobble. The vehicle was drove with caution. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. The failure was contributed to the upper steering column bearing. The technician recommended the vehicle be repaired at an authorized dealer. The vehicle has not been repaired for the failures. The failure and current mileage were 51,000.
