Bought a 4runner only to find out the frame was rusted through. That could cause the rear axle to fall off and create a potentailly fatal accident.

My 1999 4Runner, 3rd Generation, now with 230,000 miles on it, has incurred severe ongoing frame rot. From the frame up the SUV looks like new. I have had the frame rot/ rust through patched twice so far. Now, the chassis bangs on the frame as I go over even small bumps. The bolts that hold the frame to the chassis in mid section are now rusted away, accounting for the banging sound. Two more frame rot spots through the frame are now evident. It's a real shame as the 4Runner runs good and I have sunk a lot of money into it to keep it running well. I have sent a complaint to the National Highway Safety Board recently. I called the local Toyota dealer and he said there is no recall on it so I'm out of luck. I shouldn't be 'out of luck.' This is a design flaw by Toyota. The steel they used was poor quality, same as they used on other vehicles like the Tacoma (my 1994 Toyota truck also rotted away with under 100k miles on and I was out of luck with that as the recall only applied to the new 1995 and beyond Tacoma trucks....mine was the last year of pre-Tacoma). Toyota Corp. should do the right thing by us and replace these frames, especially if they want repeat customers. I bought this vehicle used with 150k miles on it. It had come from South Dakota and no rust. I live in Rhode Island and we do use salt on the roads. I sprayed the frame with a power washer during winter months to no avail. It still runs great and looks good. Do the right thing Toyota!

Right side frame is rotted out, crossmember almost separated. Rotted from inside out. Body mount shot, frame shot. Left side frame has multiple soft spots, and several holes rusted through. Will not pass inspection. Inspection tech stated he would park it and walk home.

Same frame almost that was recalled in the trucks. Body, interior, engine and transmission all run 100%. Afraid to drive it for fear of frame separating and losing control.
