I have two 4Runners, one is a 1992 and the other is a 2001 both SR5 trim. The bumpers on the '92 are fine and the rear bumper on the '01 is rusting through. The '01 is my commuter vehicle and the '92 is the one that goes in the woods. Seems this is a chronic problem for Toyota, better planned obsolescence. I will probably remedy with an aftermarket bumper & will not go to Toyota for the part.

The poor quality of the 2001 Toyota 4Runner bumper should be recalled.

I bought this vehicle in 2002, demo model, great vehicle. Well, it has gotten worse - from the major ticking in the engine, which I could deal with - but the rear bumper shows how little Toyota cares about quality and when you call the they insist no one has complained. Yeh sure total BS but anyway you cannot get anywhere with them. So this is the last product I will ever buy from a company that does not stand by their product and I would suggest anyone who looks at a Toyota to bypass them as well.

Had the same rusting bumpers as everyone else. I ended up getting after market bumpers on ebay and having a local shop put them on for $100 a piece. I know the cheap after market bumpers are not going to last very long.

The bumpers on my 2001 Toyota 4Runner are rusted through horribly. The rest of the body is perfect. Is there a fix short of replacing the entire bumper? This appears to be a chronic problem. Just about every 4Runner I see from this time period has the same problem...Toyota doesn't seem to agree.

I noticed a small rust spot on rear bumper chrome in November 2007. Tried to clean up with wax but chrome was already compromised. Began to notice that the rear bumpers of all the 2001 4Runners on the road were rusting out. Called Toyota's national customer service line and was told to bring it to a dealer. The dealer looked at it and said the vehicle was out of warranty, there was nothing they could do.They suggested that I bring it somewhere to get re-chromed. I asked why the bumpers were rusting out on every 8 year old 4Runner I saw. They had no answer. I tried to sand the spot and treat with rustoleum but the metal behind the chrome crumbled and broke off. I'm going to have to buy a new bumper just to pass inspections. I still owe $8k on the vehicle and have been very happy with it except for this. It's a universal problem with this make, year and model but Toyota claims they've had no complaints of this type. So, let me be the first to go on record. I hope other owners will see this and add their complaints. Toyota put out a flawed product. They should take responsibility and address this issue. Anyone who looks around in Massachusetts will see what I'm talking about. I guarantee it.
