Two Honda technicians messed up and installed replacement airbags incorrectly in 646 cars.

— Honda is recalling 646 vehicles because one dealership somewhere messed up when replacing Takata airbag modules.

Honda didn't say which dealer is responsible, but did indicate two technicians installed replacement inflators incorrectly.

Affected vehicles include the following:

  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2010-2012 Honda Accord Crosstour
  • 2006-2011 Honda Civic
  • 2007-2011 Honda CR-V
  • 2009-2012 Honda Fit
  • 2010-2012 Honda Insight
  • 2009-2012 Honda Pilot

Honda says the problem is with passenger airbags that may not deploy properly in a crash. The original Takata airbag inflators were at risk of exploding, which is why the dealership was replacing the inflators.

Honda didn't say how the two technicians made the mistakes, but the 646 vehicles will need to be brought back so technicians can replace the passenger front airbag modules.

The problem was discovered when a customer brought their vehicle into the dealership for an unrelated service problem, but no crashes or injuries have been reported due to the faulty airbags.

The affected dealer is attempting to contact all of the owners of affected vehicles by phone. Mailed notification to owners of any unrepaired vehicles will begin in October 2017.
