CarComplaints.com Notes: The previous generation of Explorer was so awful that the redesign in 2006 was greeted with much optimism. That didn't last long.

The transmission continues to be the Explorer's worst reliability problem. Owners report shifting hard & lunging, typically starting as low as 40k miles with a $1,600 average repair bill. On top of that, the radiator is prone to failure around 60k miles. Repairs for the radiator run $500 to $1,000 & many owners report they've had to replace the radiator multiple times for leaks, indicating a possible design defect in the OEM replacement parts.

Ford did make some significant changes to improve handling and safety. Electronic stability control was added in addition to side impact air bags, but beyond that this is a vehicle that should be avoided at all costs.

The electrical problem came from having to have my 3rd transmission installed. The truck only has 89,000 miles and the first two transmissions were covered by Ford. Unfortunately with the add on warranty being expired that's where the third rebuilt transmission cost me 1,800.00 and once that was done the check engine light never turned off and from mechanic to mechanic I found one that was able to fix it the electrical issues that bill was $2,000.00 so my third transmission cost me $3,800.00.

I need help advice or whatever. my car just wont start sometimes or it will start slowly when started. the Idle Goes up to 2k and goes back down after a while also the airbag light tends to stay on unless i would pull first gear, roll a bit, and turn the car off and on. when it wont start it wont start. i called Ford to see if there was any bulletin services out. the first girl told me you don't have your VIN we cant help you HEY HELLO???? MY CAR IS AT THE GARAGE HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO HAVE THE VIN so i called back and asked for someone else. he goes NO we aint got no Issues, talking to me like I'm ignorant and I'm talking through my hat (i found him rude) so he finally said no TBS but i see a lot of people on the forum having that problem

right now I'm disappointed that when i explained the guy my problem he didn't offer me any solutions and didn't seem interested into fixing my problem. all he said was nope no TBS for my problem that's it
