Transmission has been faltering on and off but it was hard to discern what was going on. Took it to an independent transmission shop where and found out that one of the bands has burst. Cost to fix is $1000, plus a couple hundred more to replace two parts that often fail in these models. Total cost is around $1200. This is in addition to $600 that we had to pay a couple of months ago for a broken pulley and $200 that we're about to pay for a broken blend door on the air conditioner.

On August 5, 2016 while traveling on family vacation to Hilton Head, SC, the transmission began slipping and had total failure within 20 minutes of occurrence. The 2007 Ford Explorer had just been serviced Days prior at the Local Ford Dealership just days prior with no problems indicated by service technician after being asked. Just over a year prior to this, the same local dealership in Gaffney, SC repaired the "wiring harness" as they described it to the transmission the "had heated and fused together" causing functions of the transmission to malfunction.

That was a $1600 fix that The Dealership (Gaffney SC) had indicated was under extended warranty we purchased when buying the vehicle, only to be told was NOT under the extended warranty two days later after they had torn down the transmission! This most recent failure caused extreme duress to my family for several hours on a very busy interstate and a rental car and tow bill followed as well.

There are a plethora of issues and failures with Ford Explorers transmissions all over the internet with common threads! I've always driven Ford and stood by the Ford name, but the products they have released since early 2000's have made that decision regrettable! These products are not just happen stance, they carry a common thread in regard to transmissions in Explorers! You give yourself and your product a very undesirable future and the backing of your product leaves A LOT to be desired!!!

My transmission failed leaving me and my toddler stranded for 2 hours in a snow storm , I had minimal warning signs..I.e car started jerking on 1/23/16 and failed on same day, no check engine light or anything..car was always serviced and maintained properly. Ive viewed many similar complaints which leaves me wondering, is there a recall on Ford transmissions yet. There should be, my husband previously had the same problem with his Ford car with only 60,000 miles...help...I can't afford a new car or transmission for that fact..can call attorney general on this?...

Bought this pile of junk in 2013 used with about 46,000 miles. Transmission starting getting worse and worse. 2 weeks ago it started slipping, today the car just stalls out when shifted into Drive Nov 1. 2015. Vehicle is out of warranty and it will cost over $2,500 to rebuild the transmission.

Stay far away from these vehicles, I cannot say for all Fords, but the ford EXPLODER is a car you want to avoid at all cost. They will sh*t on your days, cause depression, and change your personality.

transmission failure

This is the first time in 46 years driving that a transmission failed on me. I was driving, got a warning with a wrench in amber and the transmission stuck like in 2nd gear. We checked the code and it was P0770. Took the SUV to the Ford dealer where I got to the news of having to replace the whole valve body and the connector of the transmission and a whopping $2000 bill. Since new, I had to reprogram twice the transmission cause when you stopped the it felt like some one hit from the back or when you started moving it did some weird shifts between 1st and second gear.

I definitely wouldn't buy another Ford car. The car is good but it's so electronically complicated that you can't do nothing on your own car, even to change a spark plug it's a pain cause the plugs may break. When the problem arises, prepare to leave your wallet.

I always have been a Ford freak from my first 1969 Fastback Mustang, not anymore. I'm repairing my SUV and I'm selling it and change to a more reliable and friendlier brand.

Explorer XLT 6.0 CYL 4.0 FUEL INJECTED

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

I bought my truck from a local dealer and initially didn't have any issues. First noticed the problem when shifting out of park; there was a large clunk and jerk of the vehicle. Continued to drive until it got so bad I had to take it in. The transmission was completely shot. The mechanic who pulled the transmission out took it to a transmission place and had it rebuilt.

With the rebuilt transmission I am still having issues with it today. However, the person who put the transmission in is saying that he can't get it to act up, imagine that. I took it back to the mechanic several times who said it was ok but I've had other mechanics tell me there is definitely an issue with it still not shifting correctly.

Right now I feel like I'm getting the run around from both of the mechanics associated with this rebuild and would not recommend either to my worst enemy. Nor would I recommend anyone buy a Ford Explorer! I love my truck and don't want to get rid of it but seriously can't put any more dollars into it.

I would like to think that Ford would step up and do something about this since I know I'm not the first one to have this issue. It's not like it's something small, this is a major malfunction of the vehicle. I've been a loyal Ford customer but I'm more than frustrated. I had known all of the issues that Ford was having and not stepping up to help correct, I'm would not have bought the vehicle. It's pretty sad that a big corporation like Ford can't stand behind their vehicles.

Explorer XLT 6.0 CYL 4.0 FUEL INJECTED

  • Automatic transmission
  • 145,000 miles

Transmission failed. Took it in to be rebuilt and it never shifted right so I took it back again and they replaced an electrical strap; still not shifting right. Took it back again to be looked at. Got it back today and when I left the shop it was ok, later in the day I ran an errand and when I got in to come home I didn't have any gears, nothing and putting it in park was very difficult. Finally got reverse after a few minutes of shifting up and down; put it in park again; after many many attempts I finally got drive but in the 2 position on the shifter. I had noticed that the shifter was really loose when I first got in but thought perhaps it was that way before but I just hadn't noticed. Got home and had to force it in to park and then tried to go in reverse or drive again and had nothing.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 61,000 miles

I bought this vehicle in 2007 and since last year I am having trouble with the transmission. My transmission started to slip at 60,000 miles on it and when I pressed on the pedal it wouldn't move. I brought it to a transmission shop and had my transmission repaired last year August 2013 for 2,800 dollars. Now its July 2014 and my transmission is starting to make noise when I put the truck in reverse. Also when I put the truck in drive and step on the gas it doesn't pick up right away. I will never buy another Ford again because of the trouble with the transmission. I would keep the truck but with transmission problems I am looking into getting another truck, but definitely not a Ford. It's sad because my last Ford Escape I loved, but I think it's best to lease a Ford and get rid of it right away then buy one and have all these problems.

9/2013 TOOK MY EXPLORER TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT WAS MAKING A METALLIC SOUND WHILE TURNING AND COASTING. THEY SAID THE 4X4 MODULE WAS COMMANDING THE TRANSFER CASE TO ENGAGE WHEN NOT COMMANDED. THEY REPLACED THE 4X4 MODULE WITH AN IMPROPERLY RECOMMENDED MODULE FROM FORD. THEY ENDED UP USING A SPORT TRAC MODULE WHICH THEN REQUIRED ME TO REPLACE THE ANTI-LOCK MODULE BECAUSE IT WAS FAULTING. IN 2/2014 WE REPLACE THE ANTI-LOCK MODULE. THEN ON 3/25/2014 MY TRANSMISSION GOES. NO REVERSE OR FIRST GEAR. TOTAL COST WILL BE $3257.00. THE DEALERSHIP OFFERED $1500.00 AS A GOODWILL GESTURE. FORD USED A SPORT TRAC PART FOR MY EXPLORER AND IT BLEW MY TRANSMISSION AND THEY WILL NOT PAY FOR IT

Having grown up with Fords and this being Explorer #2, unless Ford steps up to assist I am done with the brand for good. For a transmission to fail completely at less than 50,000 miles goes beyond totally insane. Lost reverse with no warning, got into drive but within 100 yards engine started revving up. Towed on flatbed to nearest Ford dealer and got diagnosis and estimate yesterday: Overhaul existing (where they could identify what really went wrong) or replace with remanufactured transmission from Ford. Like others have stated, I believe Ford knew they had a problem with these and did nothing to resolve.

Explorer LX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 110,000 miles

I bought this vehicle used through a certified Ford Dealership where my father works and I had bought all my previous cars in April 2012. It only had one previous owner, no major history and was completely upgraded by the previous owner. I had it completely checked out, had the tranny flushed, twice, and all seemed okay. No warranty of any kind was available due to Ford Policy... supposedly. I moved to Texas in June of 2012 and it did okay. Then one day, in September, I had my husband and children in the SUV and all of sudden it just started acting strange, wouldn't speed up, the RPM's would go crazy, the noise sounded horrible and then it just stopped moving. Luckily we were just heading out of town and not yet on the major highway. We got it moved to a service station and had to call our insurance company to tow our vehicle to a Ford dealership. We had to wait more than an hour for a ride home. We were now without a vehicle in a new state. I was told that the only fix was to replace the transmission. That Ford is aware of the problem and that is the only fix and that no recalls were ever issued, which is complete bull! I researched the issue online and found out this is common but yet there isn't a fix or a recall?!?! I put $4000 down on this vehicle, financed the rest and spent the rest of our savings to move from NE to TX. I had no extra cash to spend $4000 to fix it. I was told to let the bank take it and get another vehicle. I had to come up with $1000 down and get a lower quality vehicle and have the bank take it back. They sold it at auction for only $4000 so we still owe $13000! I had the vehicle for only 5 months and because of a FORD PROBLEM I OWE $13000?!?!?! This is not right. I have been a loyal Ford Girl and Ford Mechanic's Daughter my entire life and this is what I get?! I want to know what can be done or what Ford will do about this. I am not rich and only financed a vehicle to improve my credit and instead they have destroyed it more. In my career field, Finance, credit matters and no any chance of getting a good paying job is out but yet I have to come up with an extra $13000........This is not right and I don't know how any company can live with themselves let alone get away with doing this to people. Yet our government bailed out these Car Companies instead of us people. UGH!! I JUST WANT ANSWERS AND RESULTS!!!!!!!

Complete Trans Failure at 85K. After reading other's issues here, I needed to post. Even when covered by Extended Ford Warranty - > Ford Dealer indicates the Transmission is on National back-order, and will be 3-4 weeks for just the parts. The car was at the dealer for a week to diagnose, and will be a week to complete the job when it arrives...so the total repair time will e 4-6 weeks! This seems beyond acceptable. Until recently , we owned 3 fords -> but I may look elsewhere for my next purchase.

Explorer Ironman V6

I had Ford look at the issue before the extended warranty was up and they said it was just the computer and fixed it. Still had issues but said it was fine. 6,000 miles later I am having to pay $2,500 to have it rebuilt and they say it is not their problem. They wanted $4,000 to do the job. I want to know what my rights are and if there is a recall or class action suit for this problem. I have been complaining about a loud knock when I put it in reverse since I have gotten the vehicle and having an issue putting in reverse. They kept saying it was fine. Of course, as soon as the warranty is out; It goes out. Way to go Ford!! Love their customer support. Sad thing is, we bought to vehicles from Wray Ford the same day. The 2007 Ford Explorer Ironman and a 2007 Ford Mustang. No issues with Mustang except recalls they still can't fix like the airbag and airbag light coming on. I will never buy a Ford again after this experience. If anyone know of a class action suit, please let me know. I am on board!!! 81,000 miles and needs the transmission rebuilt is ridiculous. I was there when the transmission place dropped the pan, it was full of metal. I guess the knocking will be gone now and no thanks from FORD.

This is my third explorer. Was able to drive in to Barille Ford in Valparaiso. Next day they quoted me a 4800.00 price for a new transmission. Called Ford but they could not help me it was out of warranty. Had a local repair shop pick up same and replaced transmission with one taken out of a 08 Explorer. I believe Ford knew they had a problem.

No more Fords for me...I think Ford should have helped me out on this since the auto only had 62,000 miles...most of which were road miles.

Explorer Eddie Bauer V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 26,000 miles

Purchase my 2007 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer used in Jan. 2009. At that time it had only a little over 9,000 miles on it. I noticed no problems until the day the transmission completely failed in Jan. 2010 with only a little over 26,000 miles on it. My husband was shifting into reverse and something popped, the car lunged forward and then nothing...no gears worked. Knew that wasn't good. Called the dealership, had it towed in and they said it couldn't be repaired and a new transmission would be installed. Luckily it was still under warranty!

I've only had it back a week and I haven't driven it much. Not sure if I'm keeping it or not. After lots of online reading about Ford Explorers, I'm afraid this is the first of many issues!!
