Explorer Platinum 3.5L V6 Tt

  • Automatic transmission
  • 68,225 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

2016 Explorer Platinum. 72k miles. Engine surging on every warm start. Dealer not able to repair. Not sure what it is. Front windshield trim almost blew off, had to stop and pull it off then glue it back on when I got back home. Side lower trim on drivers door was falling off, plastic connectors broke. Infotainment system was extremely laggy and the GPS didn't work at times. Even after dealer update it still didn't work properly. Rear roof seal around back door hinges was cracking causing water to leak inside. Hood is aluminum and the paint will bubble on pretty much all Explorers and come off. Transfer case is a sealed unit not allowing for any servicing or fluid changes. Transmission did not shift smoothly and would probably need to be rebuilt, dealer checked software and said it was up to date.

I bought this car used and only kept it for a few months before trading it back in for a VW Atlas. Much better built vehicle and super roomy.

I'm very disappointed in the lack of quality from the Explorer and am ashamed that Ford would make a car with this many known issues and not covet under a recall. I'm so happy to be done with this car.

Explorer XLT 4 cyl 2.3L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 73,500 miles

2016 Ford Explorer XLT EcoBoost has had an RPM surging issue for over a year now. This issue is constant when I'm driving on the highway at appx 50-60 mpg, release the gas, let the RPM idle down to about 1.5k rpm, and softly re-engage the accelerator. I notice the RPM then starts to pulse up and down. Up to about 2 RPM for about 1 second, and back down for another second. This will continue until I press the gas harder to speed up, or slow down.

I've taken it to Ford for a diagnose it but recommended me not to attempt this because they could not replicate the issue nor did it give out a check engine light for a code. I have attempted this twice.

Finally, I recorded a video and took it to a different Ford location and they were able to replicate it. The engine department could not find an issue after diagnosis, so now it is awaiting for the transmission department to review it. They mentioned it "could" be a throttle body issue, or a control valve issue, which seems to be that it should be done in the engine dept.

I am now awaiting to see what the service dept will come up with. I'll update this with the results.

Update from Sep 10, 2020: Update: Finally, after a 3 month wait due to covid, the issue was fixed. The dealership found that the issue had to do with the torque converter and the valve body control. Luckily they were covered by the warranty.

Explorer XLT V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 13,300 miles

Car seems to accelerate when going normal speed. Car revs up and rpm's excel when going a constant speed. Happens on highway or street driving.
