I got the car new. I bought the auto nation wheel and tire protection plan. I got a nail in the tire and took it to the auto nation dealer nearest my house. Service manager said he could not fix the tire under the plan because the tires are worn out. I said that they only have 16000 miles. He said, “sorry nothing I can do.” I called Ford and was connected with a person named Mike. No last name. I explained the issue and he said I’ll get back to you in a week. I told him I needed a solution soon because the car is not drivable with those tires in that condition. He told me he was a busy man and I would have to wait until then.

He called me a week later and said he would give me $200.00 toward 3 new tires. The balance for me to pay would be $500.00. I did not accept and I asked him to go back to Ford and do better. He told me I would have to wait another week. The next week he called to tell me that $200.00 was all he could do. I asked if he had gone to his supervisor and he said he had. I had learned that Ford is having problems with the 2017 Explorer steering linkage, front CV axels and transmission issues as well. He acted surprised and said he would call me in a week.

That was Thursday October 10. I never got a call so I called Ford and explained the above to the person who answered for Ford. She said her records indicated that he would call me on Friday October 18. I waited, no call. Today is Tuesday October 22. I called his extension at Ford. No answer, so I left a very pleasant message to encourage him to call me. No response. I am driving this car short distances because I have to. I know it is just a matter of time when one or more of the tires is going to blow up.

Explorer Limited 2.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 15,824 miles

In January 2019 I noticed the tread on our 15,000 mile Ford Explorer Limited was showing extreme tread wear. Then on May 24, 2019 my wife called me at work to say she was on I-24 with a sidewall BLOWOUT. I told her to call the dealer, Wyatt Johnson Ford ( "We give you more"...what a joke) on Thompson Lane Berry Hill, Tn. Wyatt Johnson Ford told her she had to bring the tire to their (???we give you more???) dealership so it could be pro-rated to determine if and how much Hankook (HANKROOK) would reimburse via their (no warranty) warranty.

Remember she is alone on I 24. She asked dealership to tow the SUV to their dealership so they could do the warranty/appraisal thing. The ("we give you more") Wyatt Johnson dealership (15 miles away) told her that they do not have a tow truck, she would have to get it there. Eventually she called AAA. She waited 2 plus hours for the tow, alone on I 24, clear evidence that Wyatt Johnson lives up to, "We give you more". She had it towed to Firestone (5 miles) where she paid $299 for a new tire.

Deciding that the HANKROOK tires were dangerous due to obvious wear coupled with the sidewall blow out experience, we should replace the tires with only 23,000 miles on them. Coincidently we parked next to another 2017 explorer at the grocery store and, due to my now heightened aggravation, I noticed it had sparkling Michelins on his SUV. I told him he was very lucky he was equipped with Michelins. His response???? They are new, my original tires (HANKROOK) wore out with only 15,000 miles on them!! Thanks Ford, HANKROOK and "We give you more" Wyatt Johnson Ford.

This is my first new car that I have had. Note my surprise when my new car, showing 20000 miles, has crappy tires. I have gone and called Waldorf Ford monthly and they told me it is natural wear. I told them I have bought tires and they have lasted 50,000 to 100,000 miles. I am pissed that my brand new car that I am paying 700 a month for has numerous recalls, and not one of them is for these horrible tires. When I bought this car, the salesman told me it would be covered bumper to bumper for anything. I bought every optional warranty that they have. Yet every time I contacted them they tell me its not covered FOR CRAPPY TIRES.

The 20th time I had it there the service guy say try calling Hankook the tire company. So of course, I called the corporate office and they said I have to go thru the dealer. It is ridiculous that someone can not or will not help me with this problem... I plan on contacting and filing with the better business bureau.

So many people affected by this - WHY IS THERE NO RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM?

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

My 2017 Ford Explorer Sport has 21,000 miles and it's recurrently maintained (tire rotation and alignment). Original tires are Hankook Ventus S1 nobles 255/50R20, which started disintegrating.

10/02/2020 - Contacted Hankook directly and II was told to bring the vehicle to either Ford dealer or Mr Tire for an inspection.

10/02/2020 - Started this horrible experience with Mr Tire that cancelled my appointment as soon as they heard the issue, since they would not be able to report it to Hankook due to "lack of hard copy forms" to describe the case

10/21/2020 - Appointment at Ford dealer (Apple in Columbia, Md) that check the case and mentioned they would return to Hankook

01/28/21 - Haven't received any position form Apple Ford / Hankook, and Apple mentioned that they don't have forms to share the case with Hankook.

Making a long (and sad story) short, Hankook keeps procrastinating the process by creating a process that cannot be executed. Although there are comments saying that this company would offer a compensation to partially offset their own problem, so far I'm not able to address the case. What a terrible way to interact with customers!

At 21,000 miles on my Ford Explorer my Hankook S1 Noble tires have rubber falling off of them. They have been rotated and the tread is falling apart throughout the tire. Then driving home with my family (including 1 year old) front right tire blew out and had to pull over on the freeway. Changing a tire because Hankook made a poor product without a recall is negligent. They're telling me I get a pro-rate price reduction on new tires is unreasonable given my family could have been injured AND these should last for at least 50,000 miles.

This should be a lawsuit...

My Hancook tired are at 2/32 and shredding leaving pieces of tread as I drive. Hankook denied the claim. I don't know how Ford can get away with selling $55k dollar vehicles with these unsafe bad tires. I was told by ford service and also discount tire that these Hancook tires should not even be put on an Explorer. So how can Ford have no responsibility when these tires wear out so fast. This just doesn’t seem right.

I also saw on the internet that Hancook was aware of their tires wearing out prematurely and that they would replace tires for the 2015-2017 explorers tires if under 36k miles. Mine has only 23k miles on it and they denied the claim.

I have a 2017 ford explorer leased in 8/2017 my tires began wearing since before the first oil change. I mentioned it then and I was told they were fine. On aug 2019 I took it for another service and had tires rotated for the first time and the tires are completely worn out at 18,000 miles. I have 20,000 mi now and beginning to worry about driving the car this way. To me the Hankook tires are terrible and should be replaced.

Explorer Sport 3.7L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 25,000 miles

My 2017 Explorer Sport with 20" Hankook Ventus S1 Noble 2 started wearing very badly around the edges on all tires, but especially the front tires. I've had them rotated I at nearly every oil change. But the last few thousand miles the tires just started REALLY falling apart.

I noticed the edges wearing abnormally fast around 20,000 miles. Then chunks of tire were hanging off around the outside edges (like it was a bad alignment), and progressed very fast from 22,000 to 26,000.

At 26,000 the outside edges are completely bald on all 4 tires (worse on front) AND NOW the inside edges of the tires, are worn out and starting to chunk and wear rapidly like the outside edges did a few thousand miles ago.

Hankook has a Special Service Message SSM 47195 to pro-rate new tires for Explorers with less than 36,000 miles.

My car came with Hankook ventus s1 noble. I observed a year ago, these tires were getting ripped off . Small chips started coming off and now it did not pass safety inspection and I replaced my tires with BridgeStone tires and need to see how they work. I spoke to dealer about premature wearing, he mentioned ford 35000 miles is better mileage. I live in dc metro area and roads are good. It is painful to replace tires just for this mileage. Ford has to find a fix for premature wearing of this issue and reimburse for tires.

My tire tread has been flaking, tearing, pieces coming off for some time now, since about 2017. I am now told I have too many miles though just this passed December 2018 I tried to get this issue resolved then as well. I feel Hankook should replace my tires.
