CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1998 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, peeling paint, & subframe rust. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Peeling paint has also been a huge issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

March of 2009, I bought a set of prime well PS830 tires from Firestone for my 98 Honda Accord V6 sedan. Since the first day of purchase, I noticed unusual shakes from my car at highway speed. The matter gets worse in recent months as I noticed loud road noise and vibration from the tires. It is very difficult to drive my car at highway speed now. I have balanced the wheels at the time of purchase and many alignments since then. I had Firestone checked my tires recently, instead of replacing the tires, they suggested expensive repairs which I don't believe are the causes of the road noise and tire vibration.

The contact owns a 1998 Honda Accord. The vehicle has nankang ultrasport NS2 tires (na). The contact stated that the tread was separating from the tires. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle began to shake and the front passenger side tire blew out. The mechanic stated that the tire split. Since that time, two other tires have begun to experience tread separation. The tires were purchased five months ago. The tire mileage over the past five months was 20,000 and the remaining tread depth was 80%. the contact does not remember any adverse road conditions at the time of the failures. He has pictures of the tires. The tire size was unknown. The current mileage was 179,800 and failure mileage was 178,000.

Had 4 tires and valve stems on a 1998 Honda Accord replaced in April of 2007 at gold coast auto center. In September of 2008 the first valve stem failed. Luckily I noticed the tire was continuously getting low only when the car was driven at highway speeds and was able to get the stem replaced before it caused a crash. The second stem failed in December of 2008, again while driving at highway speeds. In a water bath, the stem only leaked when it was flexed toward the outside diameter of the wheel. This is the flexing that might be expected as a result of the centrifugal force that is applied to the stem at highway speeds. In the case of the second failure, the leakage was so slow that the tire deflated and was run at highway speed for an hour or more. The tire eventually began vibrating badly, causing the vehicle to swerve. I was able to drive off the road onto the shoulder. The tires sidewall exhibited numerous bulges and was ruined. Although no one was injured while the vehicle was moving, as a result of changing the tire, I slashed my hand on the lug wrench. I took the issue back to gold coast tire and the manager said there was no rash of valve stem failures. That is a lie, as indicated by numerous reports of valve stem failures reported by consumerreports.org. Its time for a letter writing project to our legislators.

In March, 2003, I purchased a 'used' 1998 Honda Accord, (ex), from rosner Toyota,3507 jefferson davis hwy, fredericksburg, va 22408, 540-898-7900. This was a "lease" car that was turned in for a trade. The car was handling poorly during the winter of 2003-2004. I went to my regular auto repair shop which is express auto services, 2101 jeferson davis hwy, fredericksburg, va 22401, 540-372-4422, service attendant-brian. I was informed by brian that the tires that were mounted on the car were illegal. The tires were "warrior' with a "T" speed rating. The manufactures rating was a "V" speed rating. I was also informed by the Virginia state police that these tires were in fact illegal, & if I were in an accident or pulled over for a moving violation, I would be cited for "illegal equipment." The complaint is concerning the tires. I had to replace the (4) tires. I purchased (4) Michelin tires from express auto service, at a total cost of $545.58. Note: Express auto made a notation on the invoice that the tires were incorrect & they have digital pictures of the old tires. I had communicated my concerns with Toyota corporate & they informed me that I would have to state my complaint to the dealership, which is rosner Toyota. I received a call from the customer service manager of rosner, (mike), who informed me that they would pay 1/2 of the the charges for the tires. I told them that this was unacceptable. I wanted total reimbursement for all of the tires and he refused. I tried to get Toyota Corp to intervene, but they state that they do not interfere with thier dealerships. I also tried to get in touch with the general manager of the dealership, but I am told that he "is not available". I was informed by the Virginia state police to file a complaint with you. Therefore, please let me know if you can assist me in this matter. The only other recourse I have is to gile a claim in 'small claims " court in the city of fredericksburg, va.

This vehicle has been in the taken back to the dealer 4 times in a month and a half. The car shakes at high speeds and at idle (dealer says unbelivable shake is normal). When vehicle is driven for long periods of time it starts to vibrate and hesitate at high speeds the car becomes very hard to drive in the steering wheel, the whole suspension of the car is not secure. The brakes on the car have also been fixed or checked 4 times - it is very hard to break. Their is also a very hesitation in the engine when changing gears. It feels like there may be a transmission problem or an engine mount problem. The tires were replaced with used tires because manufacturer said that there was a flat spot on the tires. I was told that they were replacing the bad tires with new good tires (hoping that all the problems I was having was due to just the bad tires) they replaced them with used tires and didn't balance and align them (this is on the forth visit to the dealer). The problem is still there and getting worse. (dot number: M3ta tiresize: 195/65R15)
