Accord 2.4L

  • Manual transmission
  • 168,000 miles

This 2007 Accord was the only new car I have ever purchased, at the age of 48. For the first 166,000 miles it exceeded my expectations for a Honda, a company built on quality. I truly expected to run the car 300,000 miles or 30 years whichever came first. I do all of my own service including brakes, plugs, LOF ... religiously. I want to know the quality of the parts/fluids going into my car and the quality of the workmanship.

Oil and filter have been changed every 3-4,000 miles. I always use a high quality oil or synthetic. I check my oil at least once a month regardless of miles driven, more frequently if I am driving over 1,000 miles per month.

Just over 165,000 miles I started to notice oil was consumed between changes and even had to add make up oil a couple of times. The car was parked in Blaine Washington in early March 2020. The weekend of July 15, 2020 I flew into Bellingham to pick up the car and drive it to Las Vegas where my wife lives. I checked the oil before starting the car (yes, the battery needed to be charged) and it was clean and near the high mark. My window sticker communicated I had 2,500 miles before my next oil change (I mark the stickers for 3,000 miles) so I figured it was okay to drive the 1,350 miles to Las Vegas. Mostly freeway driving at 75-85 MPH. I checked the oil after ~600 miles and it was starting to show consumption and darkening. At 1,000 miles I checked it again and it was just above add and was dirty. I finished the drive home, the next morning it was clearly a quart low and dirty. I added a quart and will drive it. I also plan to replace the PCV valve.

The car has never leaked a drop of oil. There is clearly black residue on the rear bumper and "soot" inside the tail pipe. I don't think the PCV will fix anything. Next oil change will jump up to a 20-40 or 20-50 weight to see if that reduces burn.

I recently purchased a used 2007 Honda Accord. Today I checked and noticed almost 1 litre engine oil is missing just after 5000 kms. It’s strange.

Accord Value 2.4L I-4

Bought this car with 80,000 Miles and drove 3,000 and did my first oil change on it, come to find out that less than 2 quarts came out. Replace the OEM oil filter, thinking it was leaking from there, but it wasn't. Check the whole engine bay and underneath to find nothing. So I drove 1,500 miles and checked my dipstick to find half of the oil missing. All this car has seen is some city miles and highway miles, knowing this is a Honda is unbelievable. Going to get rid of it once I have the funds too.

Here I am almost 100,000 miles on my Honda Accord and I have to add oil in between oil changes. Not just a little bit, around every 1,000 miles I am 2 quarts low or more. This is ridiculous for a Honda. Everyone that hears that I burn oil in my Honda Accord is like no you must have an oil leak. Nope no oil leak, look at the tailpipe it's black. My Honda is grey and the back bumper is turning black at the tailpipe. HONDA this is unacceptable obviously your excessive oil consumption included the 2007 models.

Accord EX 2.4L

This car has had regular scheduled oil changes as per the manual. Records are available. Somewhere between now and the last oil change the oil in the engine has disappeared without a trace. No visible leaks, no spots on the driveway, no residue on the rear bumper... Is it possible this engine is the same design that went into the '08's that have a documented issue? This is our third Honda, bought on reputation. It would be unfortunate to have an un-satisfying resolution to this. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

After buying this car since new and having only dealer maintained full synthetic oil changes, the car started burning Oil - about 1qt every 900 miles. Like many others, around the 95K mile mark. After having the car thoroughly inspected there are no external leaks and it appears like others I have the bad oil control rings issue. I am driving this up the chain with Honda and paying the associated costs of doing so. However I am thoroughly disappointed in this engine and this will likely be my last Honda. We have over 120K invested in Honda vehicles, and we may dispatch with them all in favor of Mitsubishi for the 10yr warranty. No car should eat this much oil, it is a defect plain and simple and any deflection by Honda is just that.

Accord LX I4

This is an update of my March 17, 2016 complaint. The system would not allow me to do an update. ????

My dealer offered to cover 40% of my approx $2500 cost to rebuild my engine. I wrote Honda Japan and Honda America. Honda Japan merely referred me back to Honda America. Honda America chose to play hard ball, claiming this was not a significant/frequently reported problem and referred me back to the dealer. I have chosen not to have it repaired. To trade it in would cost me about $3,000 in loss of my original $7,000 investment. I can buy a lot of oil for $1500 dollars.

I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HONDA OUT OF CONCERN THAT THE ENGINE IN ANOTHER HONDA WILL HAVE THE SAME DEFECTIVE OIL CONTROL RINGS!!!!!!!!

I WILL ALSO TELL EVERYONE I KNOW THAT HONDA QUALITY IS A MYTH!!!!!

Accord LX I4

Dealer verified excessive oil usage (1.5 qts. of oil per 1,000 miles). First suggested that that was normal for a car with 153,000 miles. I researched the problem and found that the I4 engine has a history of excessive oil consumption. Not enough for a recall but a known problem to Honda. When confronted with this information the dealer, Ancona Honda, checked with the District Manager and came back with a offer. I would only pay 40% of the actual repair (approximately $2200) but gave no indication this was a known fix. The cost could actually be more. This does not meet my expectations of 100% customer satisfaction.

I bought this car ($7,545) with over 150,000 miles because I believed Honda built a quality car and I could easily put 50,000 more miles on it without major repairs. I have owned three other Hondas and experienced only minor problems.

Consumer Reports indicated the 2007 model was extremely reliable and did not indicate any excessive oil consumption problem.

I am continuing to pursue this with Honda.

Honda dealer just says that my car/year does not fit under the oil consumption class action for 2008+ Hondas, but I have 60,000 miles on my car and my oil runs out in about 1,500 miles. I am doing a second round of oil consumption tests with dealer. Don't know what to do - I am at their mercy. I will just do the testing and hopefully the dealer will agree to fix or at least tell me how to fix it. Help!

Bought this car used for our son from a reputable Honda dealer. Within a month the oil light came on and it was down multiple quarts. Took car to a closer Honda Dealer and was told oil usage is normal and within normal limits. What a bunch of BS!!! We also own a 2002 Civic which doesn't go through a drop of oil between changes! NO modern engine should use over a quart of oil in less than a thousand miles!

Accord EX-L 2.4L

  • 110,000 miles

2007 Accord 4 cyl 2.4L. August 2013 - oil pressure light illuminated. I pulled over to check the oil level: DRY! And that was approx 3K miles after oil change.

Refilled it. Then started checking regularly. It uses up approx .5 Quart per 1K miles. Engine performance is still fine. This was rather annoying, until check engine light came on in January 2014.

Read the code: P0420 (Catalytic Converter) - nice surprise just some 6 months before my car is due for an inspection.

Left it as is. Using 5/20 synthetic oil (long mileage), and change it every 5K. Oil color turns black just after 500-600 miles.

I'm hoping to get the inspection pass just by replacing Catalytic Converter. Will update you later

i bought this car in 2006 as an 07 model and its been great aside from an oil pressure switch issue where i lost engine oil pressure around 79k miles and was covered under warranty . a few times since then i have noticed the oil was low around the time that an oil change was due so i just checked the oil and had it changed and went about the normal use . this car has been dealer maintained since i bought it new in 06 and i just stopped going to the dealer for repairs this past october and i started doing the repairs myself as i quit my second job and have more time to myself . back in january when the car hit about 119,384k miles i happen to notice the oil was real low about a quart low and it was about 5,000 miles from the last oil change . this time i am at 5,000 again and i am about almost a quart and a half low as my oil light flashed on me when turning around a sharp bend so i shut the car off and added oil . i did the previous oil change myself and added the correct amount of oil per the accord dealer manual recommendations needles to say i will be changing the oil this weekend and keep an eye on it ... hopefully this is not the beginning of some serious car issues and from looking at the posts under the same car for the 2003 model year i happen to see this issue and there are alot of horror stories , i purchased this car thinking i was gonna have a good investment and have this for atleast 10-15yrs and get like 200-300k out of it given the reputation that honda has but i am weary now and a lil afraid ...i know from the 2003-2007 model year we share the same 2.4 liter engine im going to keep an eye on this but if this issue progresses i will be trading this thing in as i cant afford these repairs or the cost of a new engine ...fingers are crossed ....

I hope other owners will add reports and help raise the noise level from this situation to the point where Honda will acknowledge and fix it. Given Honda's stubbornness with other issues, that's unlikely today, but who knows in the future: management will probably be changing soon, given their sales and consumer satisfaction trends.

Accord SE 2.4L 4 cyl

Since January 2010, I've been having issues with excessive oil consumption. After 4,000 miles after an oil change in January, the oil pressure light came on after I rounded hard around a curve. I took it to the dealer and was told I was two quarts too low. They said there are no leaks and I must've put less than five quarts. I let them change the oil.

The happened again in March and this time I changed the oil myself. Again, I was two quarts low.

Most recently, the oil pressure light came on at 3,500 miles after an oil change. I had to add 2 1/2 quarts of oil to bring the level up to where it's supposed to be. There are still no leaks.

The car is currently going through major service. Will update with the technicians' findings. I don't think they'll find anything since there are many complaints of 2003 and 2004 Accords with the same problem. I have a feeling I'm going to have to change the oil every 3,000 miles (in my case, every four weeks) until I can trade off this car. Definitely annoying.

Update from Apr 27, 2011: Update: Dealer told me I needed my engine replaced at a cost of $3700. I asked them if the rings were worn or bad. They said there was nothing they could do. I had a hunch the dealer didn't do all the investigating they should have.

Three weeks after I entered this complaint, I traded in the Honda for a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagon TDi. I will not buy another Honda.

Accord EXL 2.4L

  • 44,000 miles

I'm so frustrated with my Honda Accord 2.4 EXL. It started burning oil even before the first oil change. Right now its oil level is below minimum and computer is showing 40% oil life. I took it to many Honda Dealers. Even filed a report with Honda company. They all said the same thing "Its normal for a Honda to burn 1 quart of oil for every 1000 miles". Now somebody should explain me, how can they run cars for 5000miles between oil changes. That could easily burn every drop of oil.

This is my 4th accord. I never had any issues with the previous ones. They all had over 100K miles. I feel like this is my worst investment. I'm always afraid of running motor without oil. One thing is for sure, unless Honda fixes this issue, I will never buy or let anyone buy Honda again!!!!!!

1 quart of oil for every 1000 miles..... Honda stop this BS...You will be disgraced like Toyota soon....

I cannot believe that Honda says that for their new models it is normal to consume 1 quart for every 1,000 miles!!!!!!!!

I am one of the many people that have gone through all this trouble with the dealers, and main Honda headquarters and they all say the same stupidity. People need to know HONDA is coming up with TRASH cars!!!

All that money for trash!!!! I don't think so!!

Reading so many complaints for 2003 accords and people saying the dealers and main Honda headquarters say this is normal, is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!

I will be calling all major news media. NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS WOULD BUY A CAR THAT BURNS 1QUART = 1000MILES!!!!!!!!!!

PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW THIS!!!

People buy new cars to avoid these problems, and all other mechanics even Toyota mechanics say no new cars should do that.

I will be suing Honda for selling trash, and for not including this type of information on their USERS MANUALS, or CONTRACTS!!!

Anyone interested please contact me.
