CarComplaints.com Notes: It's rare when a newer vehicle has defect trends, & the 2017 Honda CR-V has at least two — overfilled oil levels with a gas smell, & heat not working.

Both problems affecting the Honda CR-V's 1.5L "Earth Dreams" engine appear to be related to cold-climate regions.

CR-V owners report overfilled oil levels due to fuel in the oil, & sometimes a gas smell in the cabin. That problem appears to be related to fuel injection which Honda hopes to fix via a software update. Honda so far has only conducted a recall in China & a "product update" in Canada.

CR-V owners also report no heat even after warming up their CR-Vs for 30 minutes — not even enough to defrost the windshield. So far, there has been no fix from Honda for this issue.

My 2017 CRV started beginning of this year 2023 one day with all the dash codes lighting up effecting the safety drivability of the vehicle. It would randomly stop accelerating and all driver assist system not functioning properly. Accelerating was dangerous vehicle would stall or hesitate to go and almost caused us to get into an accident. This has been brought to a main Honda dealership in Henrietta New York and confirmed that replacing the fuel injectors would solve the problem and that this was an ongoing issue with the Honda CRVs. My vehicle was one of many that had been waiting for fuel injectors to be delivered at that shop. Based on other forums and Honda sites how this isn-??t a recall is baffling. We waited over a month without our vehicle being fixed and unusable because the part was out of stock. Vehicle is still not fixed and we called all out Honda dealerships in Rochester New York today and they ALL are waiting for fuel injectors for the CRVs they have being repaired. I purchased this vehicle known for Hondas reliability but this is EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING you have customers with HONDA brand vehicles that ARE unusable and unsafe DUE TO A COMMON KNOWN ISSUE with the all the dash lights being effected by fuel injectors. This coming from a family of 6 with 4 children. Currently vehicle has been inspected by two auto shops for same issue and replicated codes, and unsafe driving issues with our CRV.

Issue #1: Automatic Braking Self-Engaged. Approximate Date: 11/21/2022 Mileage: 70k I was driving home. I was traveling southbound approximately 40 mph on a 4 lane road (2 each direction). The weather was clear (i.e., no rain or other adverse conditions). No other cars (northbound or southbound), pedestrians, or objects were on or near the roadway and my car, without warning, applied the brakes, hard. The automatic braking system had engaged by itself, without warning. Imagine driving down the road and for no reason, without warning, the car abruptly attempts to stop itself. There's little to be done and it's quite precarious, especially if the road I was on had heavier traffic. Thankfully, no one was behind me or I would have been in an accident. It was pretty scary -- my passenger looked at me and wondered why on earth I'd applied the brakes so hard but I hadn't personally touched them--there was no reason to stop or slow down in the middle of the street that day. When the automatic braking engaged, there was no warning and the vehicle was running fine. Issue #2: Faulty Electrical System + Sensor Failure. Date: 7/17/2023 Mileage: 85k All possible electrical warnings came up on my dash while idling in a grocery store parking spot at the prompting me to research complaints (I didn't know NHTSA handled complaints; hence, I'm filing two simultaneously in this report today). I observe a regular, routine maintenance schedule at the local dealership, and while I expect some maintenance, particularly as the vehicle gets older, I should not be having these types of issues. I was able to clear the dash warnings myself after manually rebooting the system 4 times, but I'm sure that only alleviates the symptoms not any root cause. Based on the plethora of articles on the internet about this, it seems that the 2017 Honda CR-V has some faulty sensors and electrical issues which are a threat to personal and public safety and need additional investigation.

In January 2023 all the warning lights in the dash in our 2017 Honda CR-V spontaneously came on. Were told by Honda the system would reset and it did. Then we had to change out the battery which was supposedly the fix when it happened again. Recently the alarm would sound and lights come on when sitting in the driveway and not running. This progressed that day to having to jump start the car. Took it to Honda who diagnosed a BCM failure. Had to leave it there because it would not start at all. New BCM and again a battery installed. One week later all the warning lights come on again. Back to Honda to be reprogramed but told if this happens again would need new fuel injectors"?" Apparently, the CRV should not be driven with this problem, as it can cause automatic stops, lane changes and other safety issues. There have been multiple reports of this issue and it is not being addressed.

Three years ago all the dashboard warning lights went on in my car saying everything was wrong with my car 'brake system problem, ' power steering problem, hill assist problem, etc. etc. etc. I took it to Honda immediately and they had no idea why it was happening. If I spend $4,000 they'll figure it out. Once in a blue moon the lights will magically turn off on its own for two or three days with no problems and then the lights come back on every single time you start the car. 355 days out of the year the lights are on every single time you start the car with no safety features able to work. It's beyond irritating, but it's mostly annoying because when you pay for extra safety features (like lane keep assist) none of them work when the lights are on. NONE. No brake warning, no lane keep assist, nothing. The car runs fine - people who do the tire rotations can't recalibrate it. So I took it to Honda again last week only to be told it is a problem with the fuel injectors and it's mostly 2017 models because of the new engine look. The fuel injectors weren't made properly to fit the vehicle, and the fact thousands of people have had this exact issue and Honda WON'T address it or do a recall, is absolutely wrong and disgusting. It's not a cheap fix. I will never buy a Honda ever again.

On major highways with traffic, the car would idle rough before conking out completely, especially upon acceleration. In cases where I needed to accelerate to merge into traffic, it was very scary, unpredictable, and unsafe. All warning display messages came on as well. Two mechanics have looked and the second mechanic stated that there's a common issue with fuel injectors for 2017 Honda CRV's. Since it's such a common problem with these cars, the fuel injectors are on a very extended backorder. So, he replaced them with after market injectors and deemed it safe to drive. I drove it to work the next day (again, on a major highway) and the car died again upon acceleration.

Honda CR-V head unit or central console refuses to dim. This is a serious safety threat as display is glaringly bright and distorts night vision. I did take the vehicle to dealership for inspection and recommendation was to replace the head unit as they think this is a hardware issue. Professionally, I am a software engineer and I find it very hard to accept that this is a hardware issue. The hardware otherwise works perfectly with no defect. Judging by my experience this looks like software is overriding user inputs. Internet forums are full of similar reports by many users. As this can be a serious safety issue, I request you to look into this issue.

BCM (Body Control Module) failure/malfunction in 2017 Honda CRV EX with under 65,000 miles. Symptoms of the problem prior to diagnosis include multiple electrical system malfunctions: auxiliary mode automatically turning on and remaining on by itself (when car parked and unoccupied), door locks inoperable, vehicle not responding to key fob, car alarm going off by itself continuously (when car parked and unoccupied). Only solution to get all of the noted symptoms to stop is to disconnect the battery or wait for the battery to fully drain of power. Vehicle was taken to local Honda dealer and was diagnosed with failed BCM module. Informed currently the only remedy is to replace the BCM. BCM part number 38809-tmm-a11 is under nationwide shortage (current 4-6 month wait)to do manufacturing delays and other recall issues for other vehicle models. Therefore, vehicle remains inoperable for safety issues with the electrical system until part can be replaced.

As I was driving several warning beeps sounded and several different malfunction alarms showed on the dashboard including cruise control, brake system, and lane mitigation system. When I parked the vehicle the emergency brake light continued to flash and would not engage. I was able to turn the vehicle off, wait a while and resumed driving to get home. The brake light did remain steady when I turned off the car, but it appeared that the other malfunction alarms were still in effect. In addition, a few days prior while driving on the freeway, my dashboard monitoring system dimmed unexpectedly. When I pulled off the freeway I was able to access and recover the light/dimming system. My vehicle has only 45,000 miles. I have experienced other odd electronic problems that resolved spontaneously in the past. However, these issues are worrisome and feel unsafe, especially when they occur while operating the vehicle.

On 2017 CRV with just over 100,000 miles has experienced multiple rear door lock actuator faults impacting both rear doors and the rear hatch release (locking them all in place and not able to unlock with the power switch or key fob), and as of last couple weeks our vehicle experienced a sputtering engine and sometimes would hesitate to start (or wouldn't on the first try). The culprit of the issue was the fuel pump, which had internally degraded and ultimately couldn't produce the pressure necessary for proper fuel delivery. This has been diagnosed and reported by a local independent shop (Honda Master Mechanic though) and is currently being fixed. I will have an invoice for repair once the part arrives and is installed (the replacement pump is on national backorder). I can also confirm that the pump being replaced in my 2017 CRV is a Denso unit as well, and is original to the vehicle. Currently, Honda has an active recall for fuel pump failures, but only in CRVs from 2018 and 2019 (not 2017, although I can attest that some 2017 models are being impacted). Honda had originally recalled those pumps from 2018 and 2019 models (plus those from Accords, Civics and some Acura models) due to safety issues related to fuel delivery system failure. Those safety concerns should be extended to all vehicles being impacted.

The Body Control Module has failed. Since all of the safety features in/on the vehicle are monitored by this part is the vehicle actually safe to drive" That is the question I have posed to 3 dealers. None have been willing to say that it is absolutely safe. The part is on national backorder with no availability date provided. Can you tell me that the vehicle is safe to drive"

The Body Control Module has internal failure. The lights, alarms, locks and dashboard, when not running and locked up in garage, spontaneously come on. When driving vehicle warning lights flash about problems that don't exist. Apparently, the CRV should not be driven with this problem, as it can cause automatic stops, lane changes and other safety issues. This has been a recall in numerous other Honda CRV's, however American Honda refuses to recall 2017's. I believe there are 2 reasons for this; the part is on a National Back Order and the cost to repair is $800. There are many reports of others having the same issues with their 2017 CRV's, I hope we don't have to wait until something serious happens before you have Honda recall the 2017 for failed Body Control Module- the brain of the car. I leased and then purchased this CRV, it has been well taken care of by the local Honda dealer. It was a case manager at Honda who suggested I contact you, as you can do recalls. I have the Paperwork and info and will be happy to email it to you if you need it. Thank you.

The vehicle seems to drive normally. When I go to turn off the car after parking, the engine turns off but the electronics do not - this uses all of the battery in the state. I took to dealership and they said bad Body Control Module (BCM). Honda recently recalled 700,000 vehicles because of BCM issues however CRV wasn't one of them - I suspect I am having the same issue - the replacement BCM, I'm told by the dealership, is backordered several months. I have a car that I cannot drive. This needs to be investigated.

The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated while turning off the vehicle, the alarm started sounding off independently. The battery warning light was illuminated. The contact had to remove the battery terminals because the vehicle was not recognizing the key fob. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated that the VCN needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to parts availability issues. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 84,945.

I was driving on the highway with cruise control on when I felt a slight stutter and loss of speed, followed by all my dashboard warning lights turn on. When I tried to press the acceleration, I could only maintain approximately 20mph, with high RPM. The car actually felt like it was maintaining 20mph without any acceleration input. I pulled over and shut the car down. After waiting a while, I restarted the car. All the warning lights remained on, but it seemed I was able to drive the car normally. I decided to drive it 30 minutes to the dealership along back roads not going over 35mph. The dealership "reset" the warning lights and completed several test drives, but they were not able to diagnose the issue. It has been a couple months since the issue and it has not reoccurred, however I have noticed an occasional stutter when trying to accelerate. It is unsettling to know it could happen again, and it seems there is no way to diagnose the problem.
