CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Nissan Altima has a trend of engine & transmission problems.

Excessive oil consumption is the main problem reported by owners. Nissan did a recall back in 2006 for oil consumption due to bad piston rings, but many owners report to us that the recall didn't fix the problem. The dealer only had to check the oil consumption rate. Typically 1 qt per 1,000 miles is "acceptable" per OEM standards ... that's a lot of oil!

The 2006 Altima also has a defect trend of CVT transmission failure showing up around the 100,000 mile mark.

It's an expensive repair at over $2,000 average repair cost. For more information see Nissan Altima CVT defect info on NissanProblems.com.

The carpet on the driver side looks as if a dog got ahold to it. It just looks unfit to be in the car.

Altima SE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission

I purchased this car in January 2006. I noticed the wearing of the driver's side floor mat sometime between the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007. There is an area where the heel of my shoe rests when I'm pressing the accelerator. That area was wearing out and I didn't think anything much of it. I just thought that I would have to get them to check why it was wearing out so quickly but never thought it would become this bad. Now there is a large hole that you can see straight through. I took it in and was told that was wear and tear and that my extended warranty didn't cover that. I told them that I have had many cars and have never had anything like this to happen. I believe their mat is cheaply made or that there is a defect in the mat. I thought Nissan had good cars and good service but I was wrong on both accounts as I've had nothing but problems with them. It seems I paid all that extra money for extended warranty for nothing.
