rodents chewing soy-based wiring rodents chewing soy-based wiring

Car was fine last night. This morning, very early, I attempted to start it to go to work. While the accessories came on, the car gave an error for I-Key System Error, See Owner's Manual. I could find no mention of this in the manual. I googled the solution, and it seems Nissan has had prior problems with different switches, requiring replacement. Talking to a mechanic, he said that while the battery wasn't very old, it may have some corrosion. I checked, by opening the hood, to find the plastic wires and housings gnawed through. I did research, as we do have squirrels in the area, and found that Honda and Toyota have had class action lawsuits filed due to the soy-based wiring attracting cold rodents.

Up until today, I have loved my Nissan. I can't believe they use a material like this which it going to set me back financially quite a bit, as well as there seems to be no real way to deter the rodents in the future. Nissan should be required to replace this faulty wiring with non-edible products to protect their consumers from a useless vehicle!
