CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

Driving down a paved 2 lane county road (repaved in the last year). Had just come through a 4-way stop and was pulling away, at approx. 40 mph by this point. Farmland, open fields on either side of road. MUD FLAPS on rear tires. Rear glass exploded, NO traffic at all on the road coming or going. No farm equipment nearby. Time was approx. 6:30 am. Rear window defogger was on. Rear window exploded. Examination of debris in car showed no rock/other projectile.
