We have been dealing with this power steering problem for months. At first we thought it was just a loss of fluid. That helped for a couple weeks, then figured out that was not the problem. We decided to replace the power steering pump. That only worked for about a month. We can barely steer the car. I see this is an ongoing problem with the '06 Impala. I do not understand why there is no recall on this. As I research further on the internet it seems that it must be the pinion/rack that needs to be replaced, but that could end up being very costly. My son purchased this car in Sept. '16 and is financing it. He is a college student making a monthly payment on a $5,000 car. He can not afford an expensive repair. Frankly neither can we being we are paying for college. This is ridiculous. You do not even have a car a year and you already have to sink money into it.

Again, the car runs great, God knows where the oil goes in this car, BUT had the car for a couple of short months and the power steering went out completely. Turns out the power steering shaft SNAPPED. How does that happen? I have never had that happen ever. I read some forums and sounds like this has happened on a number of 2006 Impalas. Sounds like an endemic issue, why no recall??

Impala 3LT

  • Automatic transmission

Driver must use very strong force to get steering to work especially when vehicle has just been started. Backing out of parking stalls often takes 2-3 attempts before steering is able to be manipulated enough in order to turn into the driving lanes.

Impala LT 3.5L V6

At about 25,000 miles I experienced a sudden power steering loss in my vehicle. Luckily this car was under warranty so I did not have to pay out of pocket for this.
