CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

While driving down the road, the liftgate (glass portion) of my 2005 Explorer will pop open. There are no patterns (I.e. hitting a bump) to when it will open. My fear is I will be hauling something - the back will come open and everything will fall out onto the raod. My dogs travel back there to and from dog shows. I took it to the dealer, they adjusted the strike plate. It stopped for a while but now it is happening again. The dealer can't define the problem so they refuse to work on it.
