The 2012 is the first Focus to offer Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS). It's also the first year with massive power steering failure. These things are not mutually exclusive.
Wires were broken, and a bulb was out (probably due to shorting). Backup lights did not work, trunk light did not work and trunk latch did not work. Vehicle was only 3,768 miles out of warranty.
