CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford significantly updated the Fusion for the 2010 model year. We wish they hadn't

Throttle body issues have led to a ton of reports about a sudden deceleration and loss of power while driving. Ford issued a “customer satisfaction program” in March 2014 that, unsurprisingly, has left very few customers satisfied.

2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

While driving, the "service power steering soon" notice came on the dash. My husband pulled into a parking lot and turned the car off. We waited about 5 minutes and turned the car back on. The dash then said "service power steering now" and there was no power steering. He was able to get us home by going slowly and avoiding roads with sharp turns. At the same time that the power steering would not engage, the engine began acting strange too. It would rev up high unless your foot was actively pressing on the gas pedal or if you were going slow enough (20 mph) for the ev mode to override the gas engine. If I was alone in the vehicle, I would have gotten in an accident as I am not physically strong enough to turn the steering wheel without power steering. The car is now sitting outside my home, waiting to be taken to the shop.

While driving, the power steering quit working as my wife and I were leaving the parking lot of our hotel. It has been working fine for 3 hours prior to that. Luckily she was driving at a slow speed and it was not in a turn or at high speeds like it sounds others have experienced. Similar reports show this electronic power steering was recalled in 2011+ models but 2010 was excluded, however it sounds like it's the same problem that has been reported, closed, then re-opened. Fuses are all good. Other systems are all good, just randomly pops up with "service power steering now" and power steering then shuts off. **vehicle can still be driven but there is not power steering so it's just a little more muscle needed to control the vehicle.

The braking system near failure that puts drivers and their family at risk that Ford seems to think is no big deal. The car is unsafe to drive and yet the advance notice is all they have done. I was told months back that they would be recalling at the end of the 3rd quarter to address and fix issue. Well here we are nearing the end of the 4th quarter and they now say it will be addressed by the end of 1st quarter of 2021. I have contacted my dealer and they referred me to corporate and then the Corp. Rep had no answers either. I feel brake pedal travel and decreased braking performance is a serious enough issue where pushing back date O recall should not be allowed and Ford needs to make a greater effort to fix. And why has this government Agency pushed for a more comprehensive solution?

My power steering assist quit working while driving on a city street just after exiting the highway. Fortunately I was able to get the vehicle home witout incident. I've read various complaints regarding the same from other 2010 Fusion owners. I took in for repair and was quoted $1600 to repair. The car is most likely not worth that much but I can't afford a new one or fix this one. I've religiously maintained the vehicle brakes tires tie rods etc. And now I have scrap it because it's not safe to drive. I'm hoping that this issue with my Fusion is something that will be recalled

While driving home from the store an error message was displayed indicating that the power steering needed to be serviced "now". this same issue occurred in Mar of 2017 when I filed a complaint (NHTSA id number: 10959746). I had the matter repaired at my cost as this model year was not part of the Ford recall. (only 2011 and 2012 model years were recalled). 3.5 years later the same issue happened again. The issue was related to the epas motor mounted. Once again, I will have to pay out $2500 to repair a part that is not functioning after 3.5 years and 40K miles of wear. This represents a serious flaw in the safety of this vehicle. On the rack.

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid. The contact stated while visiting out-of-state in pa, driving at 35-45mph, the 'service power steering' warning light came on, but steering still worked. But when the key was turned off & back on, the power steering was totally gone'no power steering assist at all! the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the steering angle sensor (built into the airbag clockspring, under steering wheel) was replaced. Power steering was restored'. only for about 6 or 7 miles of mechanic test drive & contact's picking up repaired vehicle. However, next day as contact was just starting out on the 1300 mile trip back home to ks, the 'service power steering' warning light again came on. Based on earlier experience, the contact assumed the power steering would remain operable (even with the service light on) until the key is turned off. So, he continued to drive toward home without turning of the ignition'and the power steering continued to work. When, after 675 miles of travel, contact stopped at motel for the night & turned off the key, the power steering was totally gone again (no power assist!). contact completed the remaining 625 miles the following day'.but without power steering! upon arrival at home, vehicle was taken to midwest Ford (1100 E 30th ave, hutchinson, ks 67502, (800) 530-5789) for failed power steering to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering rack and ball joints needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired by dealer. The manufacturer was contacted, and contact pointed out mfg. Recall for the 2011-2013 Fusion that missed the 2010's with same steering issues (NHTSA investigation for 2010's was re-opened in fall of 2017'still open). However, no further assistance was provided by mfg.. the initial failure mileage was 90,174. Invalid VIN

Fusion brakes became very spongy last year called the dealer, took car in they reported "resetting the brake sensor", and brakes were functioning satisfactory. 2 weeks ago, problem returned on a trip of 500 miles, thought brakes were loosing fluid, checked fluid was fine. Pumped brakes in park very hard X 5-10 reps X 3 sets, brake partially returned. Arriving home brakes functioned fair. Now past 2 days unable to reset brakes and they are very spongy, very risky for travel and performing unexpected stopping. Ford service reports some of these vehicles are under recall some are not"? I will redress this with dealer this week. Now steering fault is showing up, looses assist while driving, makes parking and avoidance maneuvering difficult and dangerous. Again some vehicles under recall not mine ?"

Power steering quit working. Drove 1/2 a mile on city streets and parked in a parking lot. Returned 20 min. Later and as I was starting the car the message 'power steering assist fault' warning came on. No power steering at all. Tried restarting several times with no change. Drove home with no power steering. Have tried several days with the same warning given and still no power steering working.

I was driving to class when I got a 'low tire pressure' light on my dash. As I was late for class, I did not address it. After class, I was on my way home to put air in the tire when my power streering went out. Luckily, I was not on a busy street and was driving slow or else I probably would have caused an accident. I managed to drive the car home and put air in the tire, as I have read that low tire pressure will sometimes set off the power streering. The low tire pressure sensor went off but I still do not have power steering. I have tried to reset my car by disconnecting the battery for over an hour and nothing happens. I find it extremely dangerous that the power streering will turn off with no prior warning. If I was on an highway or busy street, I surely would have caused an accident. When the power streering went out, I was driving about 25 mph on a city street in a residential area. I am just lucky to have been driving in such conditions and not on a highway or interstate.

I was driving the car home from work and all of a sudden the dash board chimes about an error code involving the power steering assist. Shortly after, it just quits working. It was one of the most terrifying experiences I have ever had. It happened so fast I thought I was going to crash. I thank god I was only a couple of blocks from home. It was so incredibly hard to turn on the road that I lived on, I used every ounce of strength that I had. I have no idea how I was able to do it. I am so incredibly thankful that I wasn't on the interstate going a normal speed, or worse, having my loved ones with me when it happened. I was so scared, I didn't know what was going to happen. Afterwards, I started googling and I stumbled upon recalls for this particular issue. I called the dealership the next day and they told me that my model year does not qualify based on the VIN number. I do not understand how it doesn't qualify since, it is the exact same problem that was documented in thousands of identical models. I am at a complete loss as to why my life is not as important as someone elses based on a VIN number or model year. This car is not safe! it is not even driveable and I do not have the funds to have it fixed. Even if I did, I do not trust this car what so ever. I feel that it should be covered regardless, considering that my safety was comprimised due to a faulty production. How are they not responsible? ***Ford needs to be held accountable***

The power steering has been going in and out for weeks. In the past two weeks, every time I start the car, the power steering fault error lights up on my dashboard and I cannot move my steering wheel until I turn off my vehicle and start the car again. Today, I attempted to start my car 5 times, the power steering error message showed each time, and I was never able to move my steering wheel. After waiting several hours, I was able to move my car. Since the issue has now grown to be this severe, I'm fearful that the power steering is now going to go out while I'm driving.

March of 2018 my vehicles power steering assist fault came on when I cranked the vehicle. Shut car off and recranked and fault had reset. My son was driving it about a week later when it faulted again on a country back road. He was able to get the vehicle off the road, restarted and fault reset. Vehicle was under extended warranty and on 4/17/18 was sent to repair shop. Shop replaced the power steering rack with 79500 miles (have copy of bill, unable to upload).on 10/17/20 power steering assist faulted again when cranked with 98228 miles. Restarted and fault reset. Within two years and less than 19000 miles power steering assist faulted. Luckily both times it faulted for me was when starting. I live in a very rural area with back roads and it's my primary vehicle and very afraid when I need to drive it. Mileage and date are based on after the repair was done.
