2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

About These NHTSA Complaints:
This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The power steering stopped working making the car dangerous to drive. fault message was "Power Steering Assist Failure" I think. The message went off after the car was restarted and the power steering system is working now.
On at least two occasions, after cranking car, the power steering fails to work. The console warning message indicated Power Steering Assist Fault. Given that nearly one-third of ALL safety complaints for this vehicle are about steering and that several complaints have noted that the power steering can fail while driving and cause an accident, this issue certainly indicates the need for a recall. Other model years with the identical issue have been recalled.
The vehicle has an electronic assisted steering system. On many occasions when starting the vehicle the electronic steering system does not engage and it is extremely hard to turn the front wheels. This is increasing in frequency. On 2 occasions the electronic steering stopped working while the vehicle was in motion making a turn. It was very hard for me to steer the car and I am 230 Lbs and 6 foot tall until the electronic steering re-engaged. If my wife was driving the vehicle I have no doubt that she would end up losing control. She is no longer driving this vehicle because of this issue. The car has been garaged most of it's life and only has about 51, 000 miles on it. It is my understanding that Ford had the same issue on the same car in the 2011 model year. My personal mechanic inspected the vehicle and diagnosed this issue, . There are no warnings when this will occur.
Power Steering Assist fault. Common problem on 2010 Fusions. 2011 and 2012 already recalled for exact issue. Entire rack/pinion must be replaced. Quoted $2600 for parts and labor from a dealership.
The car started showing a power steering assist fault on the dash and I am unable to steer my vehicle. It went out upon returning home. Luckily I didn-??t hurt anyone or myself. The vehicle is safely parked. Contacted ford and was advised this has been an ongoing issue with the year and model. It is also very common. Not sure why they haven-??t recalled the part or parts due to the amount of complaints that have been made. I-??m in the process of having my vehicle towed to ford for repair. I was advised it-??s either the rack or the steering angle sensor.
Upon leaving for work began backing out of the driveway and found the "Power steering assist fault" displayed on my cluster. Tried to turn wheel to test and found power steering was lost (wheel would not turn). Turned off the car to see if it would reset itself. I had no luck. Drove the car around the block to verify the power steering was the only thing lost and car was very difficult to drive, especially navigating corners at lower speeds. Tried to unhook the battery in an attempt to reset the onboard ECUs. Also visually inspected 2x 50a Power steering fuses were in working order. Searched online and found 2011-2012 fusions were recalled, but the 2010 Fusion power steering assist fault has been under investigation for some time.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V158000 (Air Bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
A warning sound beeped multiple times while driving and a dash message appeared, -??Power Steering Assist Fault-??, and the steering wheel was stiff. There was a recall on the 2011 and newer, but 2010 has the same parts and everything so why wasn't this recall put on 2010 Ford Fusion. This needs to be readdressed and there should be a recall put out for the 2010 considering its a serious safety issue, and lots more people could be killed or injured to this faulty part on the car.
Upon starting my car after getting off work, a warning sound beeped multiple times and a dash message appeared, -??Power Steering Assist Fault-??, and the steering wheel was stiff. When I began to pull out of my spot and try driving, an additional message with two accompanying warning lamps (exclamation point and swerving car icon) appeared, -??Service Advancetrac-??. I managed to drive home, albeit very difficult to control and maneuver safely. I brought it to my normal repair shop, who told me that the power steering module needs reprogrammed, and they can-??t fix it but that I-??ll need to take it to a Ford dealer to have this resolved. I visited this page to see if there had been any recalls for this issue, and clearly this is a major common occurrence, with an open investigation -?" hoping this will be approved as an official recall soon.
Driving on a highway the warning came on the dash that the power steering assist failed and the power steering was out. Luckily the road was fairly straight and was able to to keep control of the car. Once off the highway and in town needing to steer home, that's when it was a real pain to drive.
The contact owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, an unknown warning light illuminated and then the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated he was able to park on the side of the road. The contact was able to drive to his residence. The contact took another vehicle to the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The contact was informed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
I was leaving work and my electric power steering went out and flashed a error code, and I was on a busy highway and could got in a serious accident. This was a recall on the 2011 and newer, but 2010 has the same parts and everything so why wasn't this recall put on 2010 Ford Fusion. This needs to be addressed cause I do not have $2200 laying around to fix this problem and its my only car so now I have no way to get to work. This needs to be readdressed and there should be a recall put out for the 2010 considering its a serious safety issue, and lots more people could be killed to this faulty part on the car.
Approximately a year ago, the electric steering assist went out. I researched and found that there have been MANY complaints on this model and other model years for the exact same issue. While other years have been recalled, the 2010 has not and I paid $1600 for the repair. After only a year, the same issue has occurred again. Research again shows there is still an open investigation into this issue, but still no recall after 4 years. When will this issue be resolved with respect to the investigation and Ford be held to account for the repairs?
The contact's friend owns a 2010 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the power steering had failed to operate as needed with several warning lights; including the power steering assist fault warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had not taken the vehicle to be diagnosed or repaired. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
