CarComplaints.com Notes: The 1999 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, engine shuts off while driving, & peeling paint. We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 100,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

Engine stalling while driving in the 1999 Accord is typically caused by a defective ignition switch -- inexpensive to repair (under $200) but dangerous.

Peeling paint has also been an issue for these Accords. Most of the complaints are with darker paint colors -- especially green & blue.

Driving on highway at 75 miles an hour - check engine light flashed - all dashboard lights flashed and car died...barely made it to side of the road without getting hit. Car was towed, diagnosis was bad ignition switch. I just searched web and found there was a recall in 2002.

While approaching a stop light at North loop 1604 West on 9/26/09, the engine stalled without warning. I had to sit there in the middle of the street and struggle to get it started again and hope no one came behind me. While driving on university campus, the engine stalled out of the blue. It happens about 6 times per day while driving the vehicle on busy city streets. The consequences are extreme stress and fear for mine and others' safety because I don't know when this vehicle will just stop on me. This exact issue is described in NHTSA campaign id number: 02V120000. I called Honda and was told by on operator that there is no such issue with the 1999 Honda Accord and there was only one recall on this particular vehicle, yet I found over 15 recalls on the 1999 Honda Accord by searching the NHTSA website. While it may be true that not all of those recalls may apply to the 1999 Honda Accord that I drive, NHTSA campaign id number: 02V120000 is exactly what is happening to my car when I am driving it.

Ignition switch failure vehicle shuts off while driving, a recall of the ignition switch was completed in 2002 for similar problem. NHTSA #02V120000 the vehicle is now exhibiting the same problems addressed in the original recall, I contacted Honda usa on 08/11/2009 to see if they would repair an obvious defect in the ignition switch. I was told they would only repair a recalled item once. Since the replacement switch is also defective and creates a dangerous driving condition, I would hope NHTSA would look into this issue before someone is injured or killed due to Honda's lack of concern for their parts and repairs.

The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. While driving various speeds, the vehicle would stall. The catalytic converter, timing belt, exhaust, and other components were replaced in hopes that the failure could be corrected. The repairs were made at more than $3,000 by an authorized Honda dealer. An independent mechanic found that the ignition key switch was causing the stalling. The contact owns a 1999 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the vehicle would randomly stall while driving at any speed. The most recent failure occurred at 25 mph. The consumers vehicle identification number was not included. Updated 09/17/08.

  • 80,000 miles
While driving, my car will stall. I then have to jiggle the key to start the car up. Sometime it takes several times to get it going while in the middle of traffic. It occurs on almost a daily basis and occurs while stopped a light to even more frightening while driving in four gear. While this has yet to cause an accident, the possibility is very high. I researched this problem and found that there was a recall in 2002 (#02V120000). I called Honda to find out why I was never notified or why the deal did not fix during my countless routine maintenance visits. Out of 1,000,000 recalls I was told my VIN was not part of the recall. This is an obvious issue that has been documented for the year of my car, but I am being told it wasn't part of the recall. This is very dangerous and I am sure there are others with the same problem.
