CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

Subframe/cradle rusted through on the passenger side due to manufacturers routing of air conditioner condensation onto subframe. No damage/rust on drivers side where A/C does not drain. Around $400 in parts and over $700 in work.

Just purchased a 2000 Accord on sat 8-22-15. Body looks great, runs shifts great, but when attempting oil change I realized passenger side front subframe is completely gone. Yes, gone. It's missing @4 inches of metal which has obviously rusted away, with surrounding metal rusted. Driver side looks perfect. Same part, two different places, acting completely different.

While driving around town heard clunk from passenger side front wheel. Jacked up car, pulled wheel and found sub frame had rotted through. This is an extremely hazardous condition, as the car could have lost steering control and have been in/caused an accident. This is a 2000 Accord and have searched the web and found many other Accord vehicles ( 1999-2002) with the same condition. Honda needs to step up and take care of their customers and replace the sub frames on the affected Accord vehicles.

A month and a half ago I took my 2000 Honda Accord for exhaust repair, the mechanic told me that the subframe that hold the car engine motor has completely rusted, I went ahead and to the car to Honda motorcar dealer because of defective hood latch switch that made the factory car alarm system to go off non-stop, I living a nightmare. Nway the dealer wanted and still want 400 to replace the hood latch switch, the dealer also said the same thing the mechanic had said earlier that the vehicle subframe is rusted and need to be replaced, they need almost 1200 dollars to do so. This a major structural component of the vehicle that can accident and death. I need to drive my car every day for work purposes. How comes there was no recall on this major structural component that holds the vehicle together.

I took my car into the mechanic for two issues: A possible brake fluid leak, and a weak to almost nonfunctional A/C in the summer months. He told me that my front passenger seat subframe was completely rotted out due to rust (the rust was not mentioned whatsoever during the car's inspection only 6 months prior) and would have to be replaced because the car is unsafe to drive. Checked online and it seems to be a widely prevalent issue with gen 6 Accord (98 - 02). I've lived in a snowy city for the life of the car, but there is no appreciable rust anywhere else on the car. Only in this one spot, which is directly under the A/C drain. Honda changed the location of the A/C drain in 2003 (with their 7th gen Accord), and this problem is not an issue on those cars. Honda has said that it is just a coincidence, but they are better off putting out a recall and covering the cost of replacing these front passenger subframes than having to pay for a class action lawsuit once somebody is seriously injured or killed because of a rotting subframe. While I think that my weak A/C may be what caused the acceleration of this subframe rot, it is unacceptable that so many people have had this issue with the subframe and Honda has made no attempts to reconcile the issue. Ford did a recall on a 12 year old car when they discovered a design flaw. I am consulting lawyers at this time to determine if there is a potential for a class action lawsuit before there is a report of somebody dying due to this.

Front passenger side of subframe rotted. Driver side is good. Inspector said Honda will not fix. This is inexcusable. When will NHTSA do something about this. Should I call my congress man to get this problem to be known to the mass public. I cant believe that someone hasn't been killed with this blatantly obvious disregard for familes who use these cars, and not know the danger.reminds me of when I contacted the nhsta on my Toyota Tacoma frame rusting off the truck and having my daughter in the truck praying we could make it home. I ended up selling the truck for half the price of it to only hear a month later that Toyota was at least willing to fix the problem. But to late for me and a lot of other owners.

On my Honda Accord 2000, I can remove the ignition key without switching the transmission to 'park'. I parked my car, and left the transmission on 'drive'. the car rolled down the slope and crashed into another car parked few yards away. The description of the recall 05V02500 (ignition-park interlock) matches exactly my car characteristics and the problem I am having with the interlock system. I called Honda and they said that the recall does not apply to my VIN.

I bought a Honda Accord with 162,000 miles on it and was told all it needed was brakes and rotors. When I was replacing the brakes and rotor on the front passenger side of the vehicle I inspected all other parts as well and that's when I noticed the big problem. The sub frame was rotted out. I did some research online and found that this is a common problem with this year and that Honda recognizes this but fails to do anything about it. The air condition drain is positioned so that it is constantly dripping on to that part of the sub frame. This is a major safety issue and I was advised not to drive the vehicle until I had the part replaced. I researched the price and labor for the part : part: $600+ Honda garage. Labor: $500+ Honda garage. Honda needs to take responsibility for this as other honorable companies have.

Heard some strange noises and took the car to a mechanic. They reported that the rear beam had rusted through on the passenger side and told me it was a design flaw common to that year Accord. They noted that the same part on the driver's side was not rusted and attributed the passenger side problem to it's location beneath the drain for the air conditioning condenser. They also indicated that the car was unsafe to drive.

I was pulling into the parking space after driving the vehicle for 45 mins (approx. 20 miles). When I was ready park the car and switch off the ignition, the car suddenly accelerated way too fast and hit the building in front. I was driving into the parking space at less than around 10 mph as I had to make 3 turns within 100 feet before coming into vacant parking space. My leg was also in the break pedal as I made those turns after getting into the private property from il rte 83. I can definitely confirm that my leg was not in gas pedal as my right leg was on the break pedal to make those turns and stop the car in the parking space. It all happened in the matter of few seconds and there was no time to react. The car came to halt only after hitting the building. Both air bags deployed as soon as the car hit the building and there was heave smoke inside the car. It was really scary because by looking at the damage the speed at the time of accident looks to be around 50 mph. It was a relatively higher curb in front and the building was just 6 - 8 feet away from the curb, I was also driving into the parking space at less than 10 mph. I am really shocked to see this kind of unintended/sudden acceleration happen with Honda Accord cars which could prove to be fatal for the driver, passenger and pedestrian alike.

Recently I heard a clunking sound coming from the front of the car. Upon inspection the mechanic said that the sub frame on the passenger's side had rusted/rotted out and that the front suspension had come loose from the sub frame. He said that the car was unsafe to drive and that I needed to have it repaired immediately. I called sunnyside Honda and spoke with the service manager regarding the problem. I said that I had looked on the internet and this was a Honda design defect and that numerous individuals had reported the same problem. I asked if Honda was willing to do anything to help with the repair because it was a design defect and that I had been a loyal Honda customer for years. The service manager contacted Honda district service manager who replied that Honda was not willing to cover any of the $2,000 cost of replacing the sub frame. I then followed up with american Honda motor co., Inc.'s main customer service department in California. I spoke with [xxx] and she put me on hold for a long time. When she returned she said that the district service manager had said Honda was not going to do anything to help so the main customer service people were not able to do anything to help. A short time ago my grandson, a student at bowling green state university, purchased a 1998 Honda Accord for $4000. Upon recent inspection of that car the sub frame has rusted/rotted out the same as my car and many other Honda Accord. I believe that Honda should be responsible for recalling and repairing these unsafe automobiles before someone is injured or killed as a result of their design defect and that they will continue to be unwilling to do so as long as individuals have no power to make them take responsibility. I am asking that you make it a priority to investigate and issue a recall of all these automobiles with Honda's design defect.
