CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2000 Honda Accord suffers from widespread transmission failure, subframe rust, & problems with the airbag system (SRS). We recommend avoiding this model year like the plague.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Subframe rust near the front passenger side wheel has become a problem recently, due to the poorly positioned A/C drain hose directly above that area. Repair cost to the subframe is over $2,000.

The SRS warning light likes to come on due to a defective seat belt sensor -- typically the driver's side. This sensor is covered under Honda's lifetime seat belt warranty, but some dealers charge a $100+ "diagnostic fee" or tell customers the entire SRS unit ($800) is bad.

I own a 2000 Honda Accord SE and the SRS indicator illuminated causing me to take into my Honda mechanic. He ran a diagnostic and discovered a temporary code 09-03 indicates a malfunction in the drivers seat belt switch. This cost me $75. He scanned the engine computer for stored codes and retrieved the temporary code 09-03 occurred 14 times over 157 key cycles. Felt problem was very intermittent and reset should last a while or never return. Not more than a few days later, the SRS illuminated. Called mechanic and he said to bring the car in and we will reset; no charge. This back-and-forth continued for a while until it just became completely inconvenient and had to consider how to fix. Options were to: 1) replace the seat belt buckle on an educated guess with no guarantee this will solve the problem. Cost: $250. 2) continue the test procedures they have and remove seat and disassembling the seat cover to inspect the seat belt wiring, again with no guarantee. Cost: $225. I have not selected either option as I feel it is a Honda defect and should be covered by them.

The first time it failed the consumer only have to pay $100 deductible. The second time the SRS light illuminated the dealer told the consumer that he would be responsible for the cost to replace it because the replacement only had a one year warranty. The consumer decide to just let the dealer reset the light and not to have the unit replaced. The light came on a third time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer told the consumer that it would cost $690.54 to replace the unit.

My SRS light has been on since December 31, 2006. It is my understanding from the dealership that my airbags are now disabled and will most likely need to be replaced at a minimum cost of $1,300. Based on the safety risks and the number of consumer complaints, Honda should issue an immediate recall.

Accord 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,770 miles
2000 Honda Accord LX - SRS light has been checked and reset (51,770 miles), the mechanic said that there was nothing wrong with system and he didn't know why the light had come on. It came back on again within a month. Honda tells me that the front and side passenger air bags will not deploy if this light is on. There is no extended warranty or recall for this make and model vehicle. This is unacceptable that Honda will not warranty a safety system involving air bags.

SRS light is on I think there is a problem with Honda Accord regarding SRS light. It keeps coming on. I already took it to a dealer. He had initially replaced opds unit. Even after 2-3 months it came back on. Now when I take it back, he says there is some other problem. On internet I see a lot of people having the same problem. It is manufacturing defect that Honda in not handling properly.

Accord 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 160,000 miles
In reference to a 2000 Honda Accord with nearly 160,000 miles. The SRS light came home a few days ago. The SRS light indicates a problem with the airbag. The Honda dealership will not look into this problem without me paying them nearly $100. From what I have been told and from what I have read, this SRS light indicates a problem with an opds sensor and is common in this year model. I am not sure what to do or who to contact. I feel this should be covered and repaired free of charge. I have no control over this sensor and in no way could I have "broken" this or caused the problem. I have searched and searched for recalls on this particular issue, but nothing! please help!

The SRS light stays on for my 2000 Honda Accord. This is the 6th occurrence of this problem. The first instance was in 2002 and today, October 18, 2006, it is on again for the 6th time. When this light stays on the air bags will not deploy should there be an accident. According to New York state law, if a vehicle is equipped with air bags they must be functioning.

Accord 4-cyl

While driving my 2000 Honda Accord ex last week the SRS light came on. I called jerry damson Honda and was told by the technician that my VIN number was not covered by the extended warranty given to some Honda owners which had the same problem. I was informed that I would have to pay for a diagnostic. If there is a known problem with the SRS light coming on there should not be an exception for certain VIN numbers. This is unfair!!!! my brake light also comes on and goes off even after a part was replaced. Needless to say this was my first Honda and will be my last!!!!

SRS light has come on and there is no apparent problem. I have been told that my airbags will not deploy if this light is on and dealership wants tons of money to fix it. Since this is a major safety feature, this should be recalled. I have seen lots of other people with this common problem and I think you really should look into this.
