CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004-2006 Nissan Maxima has widespread transmission problems. It starts with the vehicle jerking when shifting, & progresses to full-blown transmission failure.

Maxima owners report spending $3,000 to replace the transmission, typically around when the odometer hits 100,000 miles.

There's a class action lawsuit filed in late 2011, & it is still in the "discovery" stage. Apparently, these things take time ... far too much time.

This car is awful. First the transmission went, then the timing chain. All under 100,000 miles.

Maxima SE 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 202,000 miles

I have a 2006 Nissan Maxima, purchased new from a Nissan dealer. My daughter now drives the car, and it is her primary vehicle at college. I have had to repair the timing chain on this vehicle twice! Once at about 75k miles and again at about 170k (dates are recalled to the best of my memory - both times at the Nissan dealership - and I have the paperwork to document actual mileage of repair and cost).

The car has 202,000 miles now and starting making a noise about a week ago. I finally got my daughter to get the car into a repair shop to have it checked today. They are telling me the issue is the timing chain. With the two previous repairs, the dealer told me the issue was with the tensioners and they had gone bad and the chain was loose. On the second repair, I questioned the dealer asking if this was a recurring problem with this car and asked why it had worn out twice? No forthcoming information was presented from them, and they did not warranty their first repair of the timing chain given the mileage between repairs.

With today's diagnosis, I began to research issues with this vehicle and timing chains and found that there are several lawsuits against Nissan in some states. Seems Nissan is aware of the issue and has issued notices to their dealers about the problem. At this point, I am seeking guidance to how I can hold Nissan accountable for faulty parts and for hiding the issue with consumers. I am not willing to put another $2k into a repair for a car that is probably not worth the cost of the repair. I am extremely frustrated that this is something that has now occurred three times in the life of the car. If it were not for the timing chain and tensioner issues, I would give this car good marks for dependability. Because of them, and Nissan's unwillingness to properly fix the issue with the first two repairs, it is a piece of junk, and I will never recommend a Nissan to anyone nor purchase another Nissan product again.

I bought a 2006 Nissan Maxima used 20.000 miles on it 10000 miles later started hearing this noise coming from engine took it to dealership to get it checked out and the guys told me it was nothing serious I can continue driving it. As the time went it got worse and the car started losing its original power because the timing chains were loose. The Nissan dealership knowingly turned me away because my car was still under warranty. I am really angry at Nissan because they sold me junk car and I will never buy their car ever again.

tired of this 06 maxima SE. the whole entire timing kit is just getting worse everyday. this car has only been driven for 3 1/2 years and the timing chain is already ticking loud. i hope it doesn't get to the point where it blows my engine. Nissan needs to fix this issue by giving full service or at least half price service on this nationwide! especially in California i know I'm not the only one with this issue.

MY LAST 3 VEHICLES HAVE BEEN NISSAN MAXIMAS. I TELL EVERYONE HOW GREAT THEY ARE AND HOW RELIABLE THEY ARE. NOW I HAVE THIS ONE, 2006 MAXIMA SE AND ITS BEEN NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. IT ONLY HAS 150K MILES ON IT AND I HAVE TO REPLACE TIMING CHAIN & TENSIONER! MY LAST MAXIMA HAD 250K MILES AND NOT A SINGLE ISSUE. MY CAR IS ALSO STARTING TO SHIFT HARD SO IM SURE THE TRANS PROBLEM EVERYONE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. MAYBE ITS TIME TO DUMP THIS CAR? WHAT A SHAME. I'LL BE SURE TO POST MY FEELINGS EVERYWHERE I CAN...IM NOT VINDICTIVE, BUT NISSAN IS FAILING TO REACT TO THEIR OWN FAILURE AT THE COST OF THEIR FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS.

This car should not be giving me so many problems. I keep my maintenance up to date and this car should hold up better than this.
