CarComplaints.com Notes: An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge.

Owners are reporting that their engines are deprived of oil halfway through their maintenance schedules and in some cases the damage is so bad that entirely new engines need to be installed, paid out of pocket. The issue may be a result of defective piston rings.

Toyota has issued a TSB for this problem, but maintains their stance that vehicles equipped with a 2AZ-FE engine are burning through a “normal” amount of oil.

My husband and I bought a Toyota because it was supposed to be highly dependable and then the engine goes without warning. I think all car manufacturers should be made to warranty the drive train for 100,000 miles. 5400. for a used engine on a $25,000 vehicle is a back breaker.

The oil was changed every 5000 miles as recommended and the dealer said the car showed no signs of misuse.

The car was running fine and then suddenly the service engine light came on and the car sputtered and seemed to be losing power. My husband drove it to the local garage. They found antifreeze in the spark plug well. They clean it out and suggested that we get it to a dealer.

We are so angry. The dealer gave us the "too bad/so sad, please give us your charge card number in advance treatment" and wouldn't even negotiate on the price. I will never buy another Toyota product again and I will never darken the doorstep of this Toyota dealer for any future repairs.

Camry SE 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

I was driving to my sister's house and my Camry decided to spray all of the oil down the side of the car. I wouldn't find out until I got to her house and got out because even though the car was 4 1/2 quarts low on oil, there were no engine lights or any indications that something was wrong. I called a tow truck to take the car back to the dealership, but it was a Saturday and no one was in until Monday. I got a call Monday that they found the problem to be the hose that feeds oil to the VVTI (variable valve timing) which was apparently such a chronic problem on the 07 that Toyota changed the hose to metal tubing on the 08, but never did a recall or sent a tech bulletin to those of us who still had the hose. They replaced the hose ($265.00) and assured me there was no further damage due to running on low oil. However about 10 minutes after leaving dealership, valves were still noisy and engine was still spewing oil so I took it back. After 1 hour the mechanic told me that he "misdiagnosed" the problem and the oil leak was actually due a cracked head and there was a pencil sized hole going into the engine right above where the VVTI hose connects so they just assumed it was that problem, charged me for an unnecessary repair and sent me home driving a car with a cracked head. The best part was even though the car was only an 07, because I had 75,000 miles on it, Toyota would not warranty anything even though the cracked head was obviously from poor workmanship and materials. In addition to the cost of the head, this repair requires 35 hours of labor making the bill around $4000. Yeah Toyota, I love what you do for me!!!
