CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Camry used to be adorned with our “Seal of Pretty Good” but that was before an alarming number of complaints started rolling in for excessive oil consumption.

Owners are being caught off-guard with how quickly their cars are running out of oil. No leaks, no spills, just 1 quart of vanishing oil in as little as 1,200 miles. Toyota maintains this is “normal” for the 2AZ-FE engine, even though they issued a TSB for the problem in August of 2011.

This is my stepdaughter's car (which me and my wife purchased for her two years ago). This particular year Camry is known for excessive oil consumption but Toyota didn't offer any recalls or repairs for it. My stepdaughter changed the oil regularly (every 3k miles) and checked the oil in between. She called me and said her car was making a strange clacking noise and then later in the day she was making a turn and the steering became really difficult (it shut off but she didn't realize it) and there was some smoke coming from under the hood. A good Samaritan towed her back to her apartment which was very close.

I had her check the oil after it was back and it there was just a little on the end of the dipstick but the check oil light did not come it. The light is working because it lights up when you first turn the car on. I had her add oil and after 2 quarts it was halfway up the hatch marks on the dipstick and then start it. It started and ran and sounded normal (we were on a video call) but there was a little smoke around the top of the engine (the valve cover gaskets needed to replaced so it had a little leak around the valve cover). She drove it to work the next day (20 minute drive in city traffic) and made it fine. I told her to take it to a shop she goes to after work. She was almost to the shop in a left turn lane to cross over a double lane road, the car shut off. More good Samaritans pushed it across the road into the shop parking lot.

They checked it out the next day and said the rings were burned out and didn't have much compression. Estimated cost to replace engine was $4,000-$5,000 which were not going to do on a 2009 with 199,000 miles. She was able to drive it back to her apartment complex (5 minute drive) and it made it fine. Now she's looking for a used but the used car market is very difficult right now, plus with inflation and the curb on lending, she hasn't been able to qualify for a car loan. Fortunately, her boyfriend and his family are very generous and kind people because they are willing to sell her his car (2015 Honda Civic) at a greatly discounted price but without a loan, she's going to have to come up with a personal payment deal with them.

My mom has had several Camry's and they have lasted years. My sister drive my mom's hand me down Camry's. I had a 1992 Camry in 2006 with 300,000+ miles and I drive it from Kentucky to New York City and back with no problems. Shame on Toyota for putting out a vehicle that is known for excessive oil consumption and then not owning up and making it right to vehicle owners.

I just spent money on this car by doing the spark plugs, new front and rear brakes, new Michelin tires and now I'm told the engine is gone. I always took good care of this car so can't understand why the engine would fail.

We purchased this car from a used car dealership in Mississippi. When we first tried to start it, it hesitated. They immediately put a new battery in and it started fine. The next morning after we tried to start the car, it would not start. We replaced the coils and did a few minor things and it ran for thirty minutes. We took it to our very trusted mechanic and he told us the bad news. The car lot in Mississippi sold us a car that had a busted head gasket and they knew it, he said. He is willing to testify to that. The dealership insisted that we pay them cash for the car. Any help would be appreciated!

CATASTROPHIC FAILURE - INJURIES/FATALITIES AVERTED. At ~ 9:05 I was traveling south on MA Rte 128 in left passing lane just beyond the Manchester exits. I was in the left-hand lane in a cluster of cars traveling at 65-70 MPH. I was traveling ~ 70 MPH passing the vehicles on the right. There were cars behind me in the left-hand lane, the closest approximately 40-50 ft behind me. Suddenly I heard a small explosion under my car. Immediately clouds of a smoke-like vapor poured forth from the back of my car, followed by a loss of power and a racket from under the car as if something was dragging from on the pavement from my car. I immediately threw on my hazard lights and somehow made it to the side of Rt. 128 without a collision. Luckily no-one got hurt.

From all that I understand about the failure, it sounds like there was no oil in my transmission, yet I had it serviced, including an oil change, at Ira Toyota in Danvers MA mid-last year. I had no indication of low oil, as the low-oil warning light did not come on. But I have had other electrical issues with my car, so perhaps there was a problem with the warning light system.

I am the original owner of my 2009 Toyota Camry with 163,000 miles on it. Approximately two weeks ago the check oil light came on so I took it in for an oil change. I continued to drive it and then on Saturday, September 24, 2016, while driving it, it just stopped. And then when I went to start it, it made a horrible noise. I then had it towed to my repair shop who informed me the engine is blown and I need a new engine.

I then researched oil consumption problems with my vehicle and found that Toyota has place an extended warranty on my vehicle, but in order to qualify for their free repairs you have to take it to a Toyota dealership and have them top it off with oil and then bring it back after 1000 miles so they can check the oil level. So I called Toyota and they informed me that since I had never done that, there is nothing they can do for me.

So, let me summarize Toyota's position:

1) We created this engine that we know is faulty and consumes oil excessively so we are going to extend the warranty

2) If you happen to not receive the letter we send you in the mail notifying you of an oil consumption test and have the test done by us, then we cannot help you if your engine breaks down.

For the past 10 years I have sang Toyota's praises to everyone I know, telling them you can't go wrong with a Toyota. Gee, was I wrong. Not only can you go wrong by buying from them, they do not stand by what they make.

I have owned Toyotas for years and found them to be very reliable rarely needing attention beyond oil changes. Last summer, my oil light came on. I was due for an oil change as the mileage since the last change was nearly 5000. (I usually change oil every 3000 miles. Life had been very hectic.) When I checked the oil, it was dry. I took it into Toyota and they conducted an oil consumption test. Given the amount of oil the car was "burning", I did not qualify for a fix. They told me to come back in six months. Same routine, same answer. I was told "none of them" ever qualify for a fix at Toyota's expense. I dislike having to check the oil all of the time and add significant amounts between oil changes. I am displeased with the line that this is normal. Never had it with any other car!!! I would like Toyota to address the issue. At this point, I will not purchase another Toyota.

Baffled about the car not upholding its engine longevity also it's very rare to hear about Toyota's engine failing with so little mileage. Coming from a big industrial auto giant as Toyota this is very surprising to me maybe they'll learn from this but I highly doubt it.

NEVER BUY TOYOTA IN YOUR LIFE!!!

A relatively new car broke down when everything was perfect in the car but yet it had the excessive engine oil consumption problem . Every time I change the oil I have to pour 1 quart of oil in my car after four or five days of oil change. The engine blew on me while I had 3 little children with me in the car including an infant 3am on the highway almost got hit by a truck because the car just shut down and would start again.

Toyota sucks and clearly says we can't fix the car for you and they can't even figure out what's wrong with the car. My request to everyone who's driving one right now to get off the road and buy another car those are not safe I swear. They suck , they aren't like the other companies who will be happy to take care of you. Oh yes when you enter their dealership everyone kisses your ass but once they take all your money and you have a problem they become poor and broke and can't do sh*t for you.

I'm going to file a lawsuit, join me all of you out there coz I know I'm not alone you all have the same nightmare .

DO NOT BUY TOYOTAS . That's it

engine failure

I have been an avid Camry owner and was totally surprised to see this happen. I performed regular oil changes every 3 to 5k miles. I was on a long trip about 100 miles from home when all of a sudden a large puff of smoke came out of the lower part of my vehicle. Pulled over to the side of the road to discover that all power had been lost and eventually died, engine blew a hole the size of a pancake thru the case. I did research to find that the 2009 Camry has had numerous complaints regarding the engine, particularly oil consumption. I feel that this car should have been recalled. Have been forced to unload the car.

I bought my used 2009 Camry at Ben Mynett in Kannapolis. I noticed after a few months of driving the car, that there was excessive oil use with the 2.4 liter engine. With no drops of oil in the drive way and no visible white smoke, which indicates burning I was pretty much forced to check my oil 2 times a month, and adding near a qt. along the way. Last Tuesday I was tooling along near my house, when all of a sudden, a loud knocking noise started and raising holy Cain! The car is in the shop now with a spun main bearing, and pcs. I have only made 8 payments on the car, and have 28 left....I'm thinking my lucky stars today for the extended warranty that I purchased with the car...but may still be on the hook for the expenses beyond $3000. If I'd known about the troubles with the 2.4 liter, I may have bought something different. After all this, I'm extremely frustrated. Thanks for listening🚲

After the factory water pump failed at ~43000 I replaced it with a "aftermarket" water pump. At ~50k the check engine light came on. Fail code indicated a misfire on cylinder 2. I replaced the spark plugs. At ~53k miles the check engine light came on again. I replaced the coils and the light came on again at ~55k miles. I ran some seafoam through the engine and injectors thinking perhaps it was a clogged injector.

At ~57k miles the engine failed to start. Cylinders 1 and 2 are filled with coolant. The head bolts failed as is apparently very common on this engine (2AZFE) causing the head gasket to fail and coolant to leak into the cylinders. The car was 7months outside of the 5yr but under the 60k mile warranty. Even though this is a common and known issue Toyota refused to offer any assistance because I used an "aftermarket" water pump which had nothing whatsoever to do with this failure. Besides, why would I use another Toyota OEM part when one just failed at 43k miles?

This event has turned me off of Toyota's. I have owned 3, my parents own 2 and both my grandparents own one. I nor any of my family members will ever purchase another one.

we are very disappointed with the fact that the engine quit, even though we have had in maintained regularly. We have the records in the glove box. Now we have received a safety recall that states that a Stop Lamp Switch is bad. We do not know if this would have stopped the check engine light from coming on, because it sure did not. There was no warning that anything was wrong. I was on my way home from work when I heard and odd clanging sound, so I knew something was wrong. We had a auto repair man come up and check it out, we were then told that the engine as bad. Everyone we have talked to says Toyotas run forever. We were sure hoping this was true. Now we have been with one vehicle and have been using our sons truck to get to work. Need to know if anything can be done about this. We really loved this car , its great to drive and hate the thought that we might not want another Toyota because this happened. Please let us know if we can be reimbursed for some of this or something.
