CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Cobalt continued to carry the torch first lit by the 2005 model year. To be clear, that torch is burning bright with widespread power steering issues, electrical curiosities and a dangerous ignition switch defect which led to a massive recall by GM. This isn’t a great torch to carry.

The 2006 added it’s own special flare with gas leaks due to cracks in the “return portion of the modular reservoir assembly.” A recall of 2006 Cobalts was issued to fix the problem, but only to vehicles sold in or current registered in Arizona and Nevada, leaving other owners to pay for repairs themselves.

Between this car stalling while driving, giving owners fits with power steering failure and having it be a potential tinderbox because of gas leaks, we felt we had no other option than to award it our “Avoid Like the Plague” badge.

I had my ignition switch repaired as a recall but the key still locks in the switch until you move the stick around. Also for no reason the door locks open and close on their own. It seems the car is haunted! What can I do???

I had to take the fuse out of my car so the alarm would stop going off but my lights still go off and my locks go up and down all the time. I am sick of starting my car everytime I go out to open my door. People look at me like I am stealing a car when I am buying this car. Really, this gets old after while. Chevrolet, please do something about this and stop sitting on your butts. Have a great day

Update from Sep 15, 2015: I would like to say tht I have nothing but problems with my car!!!! It still shuts off on me,even while I am driving. Really! I am not trying to lose my cause you guys at GM can't get ur head outta ur ass. Help us make the cars better. Do something right for once!!!

My car has been on recall so many times. I wish I could get rid of it, but I still owe money on this P.O.S!!!!!!! I understand cars get recalls all the time but dang if ya'll knew about this then why wait so long to recall this. Not fair to us who love CHEVY'S. Why don't you just take the car off the line.

I love my colbalt ss with one exception. It periodically locks me inside the car. I can use the windows but my drivers side door will not unlock or open. I have been forced to exit the vehicle from the passengers side door. I am sure people must think I am crazy. It has happened when it is very hot outside and again today when it was raining. I think it is related the to scrambling of the radio displays. The radio display will periodically scramble so that any words or numbers are unrecognizable characters. I am hoping they will recall this and I will be able to keep my car.

Cobalt

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,200 miles

The Alarm sets itself and turns itself off by itself, I can't leave anything in the car as the doors lock and unlock themselves all the time. I have been told by Chevrolet the part to fix this is $600.00, just for the part! I have even been stuck in the car twice and had to call and have someone come out and get me out, as the doors and windows would not open . This combined with the Fuel Module problem, leaves me scared to drive the car with the windows up. I do not wish to burn up..

Cobalt LS 2.2L

ive been having a lot of issues with the power locks. theyre really going haywire. in addition, last year i had steering issues. ive done some research and a lot of owners of these cars have had the same issues. Also, the gauge reads low fuel when there's half a tank filled. i dont think i should have to pay for the defects that were caused by the company. i could see if ive mishandled the vehicle. but i go for the scheduled maintenence and i dont speed or mishandle it. its more trouble than its worth. On top of all that, i still have three years left of payments on this..vehicle. i cant afford to pay $300 payments and insurance. ive been late on the payments because ive had to pay for repairs. i want to buy American goods but theyre awful. next car will be a toyota, honda or mitsubishi. im looking to sell this car to a car cash type of establishment. at least i can use that money as a downpayment on a GOOD car

It's truly disappointing... I hope GM will take care of their customers and reimburse their consumers just for the inconvenience of the safety hazard this causes...

Well, let me tell ya, not only is it annoying, but just think about it....you are driving down the road, and the door locks just go crazy!!!!! At first I didn't think anything about it, but the one day that I only drove my car, maybe 12 miles and the doors locked and unlocked for the total of 35 times, and yes I actually counted...and it really pissed me off! Every since I got my '06 Cobalt, I have had nothing but troubles! My main concern is that I would wake up and go out to go to work and my car be gone...or run to the store and come out and it be gone.....'cause the doors wouldn't stay locked most of the time!! I am just thankful that I don't have any young children, where I could have been driving down the road where the doors would unlock, where they might have opened up the doors while driving down the road!!!!! I have read that other people are having the same problem!!! So, I got pissed and called the dealership! I told them what was going on, and they acted like I was crazy....'cause they didn't hear of anything like that happening with any other Cobalts. Well, I have read on-line where other people are having the same problem.......but I think that more people should actually voice their opinions :)

Anyways.........just in case other people are having this problem....I was informed that it is the switches inside your doors, where you lock and unlock your door!! I was also told that it was gonna cost me $100.00, out of my pocket..... to get the 2 switches and have them programmed!!! So, that's just a little bit of info for anyone out there that might be having the same problem as me!! The only question I have is, what made the switches go bad in the first place? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for listening.....dmysticangel
