CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Cobalt continued to carry the torch first lit by the 2005 model year. To be clear, that torch is burning bright with widespread power steering issues, electrical curiosities and a dangerous ignition switch defect which led to a massive recall by GM. This isn’t a great torch to carry.

The 2006 added it’s own special flare with gas leaks due to cracks in the “return portion of the modular reservoir assembly.” A recall of 2006 Cobalts was issued to fix the problem, but only to vehicles sold in or current registered in Arizona and Nevada, leaving other owners to pay for repairs themselves.

Between this car stalling while driving, giving owners fits with power steering failure and having it be a potential tinderbox because of gas leaks, we felt we had no other option than to award it our “Avoid Like the Plague” badge.

I've been having a problem with my 06 Cobalt for a while. Sometimes when I crank the car up, it will turn right back off. When I crank it up again, shortly after driving it cuts off. Also, when at maybe a stop light, it will shudder and soon after will cut off. It has been so bad that at times, I have made turns and almost been hit because my car just cuts off. I am making plans to take off work to take to the dealer...

I have taken my car to 2 different dealerships, one in California, one in Florida, while it was still under warranty. Neither one was able to find the problem. They tell me nothing is wrong with it. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with it when every time I come to a stop the car shudders, sometimes so violently, I worry it will stall out or die in the middle of the road. I'm going to try a 3rd dealership this month, this one in Maryland. My factory warranty has already run out, but luckily, I had the forethought to pay for the extended warranty when I bought the car. I'm hoping some others have had this problem so they can help me figure out what I need to do.
