CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2005 Honda Accord suffers from transmission failure. It's not a huge widesperad problem like in prior years, but definitely still something to consider.

The transmission begins slipping & eventually has to be replaced, typically soon after 90,000 miles & with a repair cost of over $2,000.

Transmission failure problems have been a huge problem for the Accord & several other Honda models all through the early 2000s model years. Honda eventually extended the transmission warranty to 93 months/109k miles for the 2000-2001 Accords as a class action lawsuit settlement, but owners of other Accord model years with transmission problems are out of luck.

I bought Honda because of quality brand but I guess I was wrong. Blowing up transmission at 45K is unacceptable. Dealer quoted $4100. I have to shop around to see if I can get a rebuilt one cheaper.

This is going to be my last Honda ever. Let me know if anybody is doing a class action since I am seeing lot of transmission failures on Hondas starting from 2000s.

I have babied this car for 4 years. Got the oil changed at every service interval and made sure everything was done and kept great records. I do not drive very much so have less than 31K on this baby. I bought a new truck and gave this car to my daughter because I was confident that it was going to be a safe and reliable car for her. She called me from the college parking lot crying that the car wouldn't move and sure enough, drive/reverse....nothing. Took it to my personal mechanic who pronounced the transmission 'dead'. (I won't take it to Honda because they keep trying to rip me off every time I go there). He will replace it with a rebuilt unit with a 3 year guarantee. Will cost me $2800 but that's better than $3900 from Honda. I'm going to call Honda and scream at them anyway because I put my trust in them. No more! Stay away from Honda, try Toyota instead.

I have a 2005 Honda accord, purchased brand new that is giving me transmission problems. I noticed the problem when it started jerking. At first I thought it was bad gas or something. Then it kept doing it, but got worse. By the third day, it would completely stall while driving. Needless to say the problem got worse later on that day, and the car would be in drive or reverse and not do anything. I took it a couple of places and was told that it's the transmission solenoid, that it's stuck in off when it's supposed to be on. I don't know how this happened. I was told by one person that it's something simple, another person that the entire transmission needs to be replaced, so I"m going to get another opinion. Needless to say, I had a 92 accord that had about 300k and never had this problem. I always thought hondas were good cars, but I'm now learning that a lot of people are having the same problem. I just hope it doesn't cost thousands of dollars to fix, because the car isn't even paid for yet. Does anyone know if American Honda will help with repair costs and tag it on to the car loan?

Check Engine Light came on, transmission began to slip.

Took to Autozone, trouble code was for failed torque converter. Within 15 miles, totally failed transmission, towed to Honda Dealership in Irving on Saturday. They are waiting for Monday to get quote on replacement transmission.

Accord LX 3.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 56,000 miles

This problem occured with no warning at all. I pulled up to the light, the car started spitting and felt like it was going to turn off. I made it home, however when I pressed on the gas the car sputtered and almost turned off. When I pulled into my space and let up off the brake the car made a really bad noise, sounded like it was coming from the right side. I thought it may be an issue with the throttle, but once honda got it i received the bad news. I'm really upset about this, because Honda is known for having their transmissions last at least 100K....It's really caused a hardship for me, since I just had my car serviced with Honda less than 2 months ago at the Honda dealership. The worst part of the is that Honda can't even tell me exactly what went wrong with the tranmission. They call it an Internal failure and said for me to get a report on what went wrong, they would have to charge me several hundred additional dollars for that. I thought at every maintenance appointment they were suppose to run a diagnostic on your car inlcuding the transmission.

Accord EX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 67,000 miles

I was on the interstate and my car just revved up in the engine and the rpm's went all the way in the red. It was frighting and terrible dangerous considering I was in 70 mile an hour traffic. I called Honda Care to transport to Honda dealer and was told I need a whole new transmission. This is day two and they are still waiting on the transmission from Dallas to arrive. I have an extended warranty due to the grace of God. Times are tough in life and Honda should really try to get it together, I could have lost my life considering the circumstances. May God protect all of us that drive these Hondas that are defective.

Accord EX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,750 miles

Transmission went at 48,750 miles. It felt a little funny one day in the cold weather, the next day my wife was rear-ended by a tractor trailer. Fortunately, the Honda was still putting at 25Mph (shoulda been 40Mph) and it wound up being a tap rather than a total. She got it home with the blinkers on...and that was all she wrote. Started right up, shifter moved freely, but no reverse or drive...like having neutral on all gears. Honda was generous to offer 10% of a new way-overpriced transmission. I of course declined.

The manager felt bad for me and said he would offer me a phenomenal trade-in deal. HE offered $6500. This car would sell on their lot for over 15K. Great deal. No more hondas for me. Apparently there is a pump that goes bad that causes this problem. I had all my routine maintenance, too.
