CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2014 Honda Accord is showing signs of an electrical problem with the starter failing soon after the 36K mile warranty expires. It's compounded by reports that the OEM battery doesn't have sufficient amps to start the V6 reliably after a year or two.

For now we are rating this problem with the "Beware" seal because it's occurring so soon after the 36K mile warranty expires. The upshot is when your Accord won't start, that's never good, but especially bad when it's just a few years old.

Also once again, owners are complaining that the 2013 Honda Accord seats are uncomfortable. Uncomfortable seats has been a significant complaint with the Accord since the 2008 model year.

Honda Accord 2013 V6 100k miles

Very hard to find issue. One dealer couldn't find it but the second one can.

Problem: Car won't start. After driving it 30 miles every day, the battery completely drained, and won't crank on start button. Jump won't help, but jump from Tow truck works and it starts. Took to dealer and car works for them. Can't figure out issue. Replaced new battery.

A few days later, the car starts from a cold engine but wants to shut down on red light at traffic light after 10 mins of driving and warming up. Hesitates severely above 3k rpm. Died two times like this and cranks but won't start. Wait 10 minutes, let it cool and starts back up and I go home.

Various warning lights including engine check lights comes on but goes away after overnight. Local mechanic was able to pull codes and it says

Engine Codes P0335 and/or P0339 Honda service bulletin 16-011

Fix: The second dealer replaced Crankshaft sensor for $490 and it's all good now.

Looking back, the crank shaft sensor had some issues since I bought car brand new in 2013, as it did shut down like other users have pointed out, a couple times a year at traffic lights and would start right back up normally.

This bulletin says to replace crank shaft sensor and if required engine harness. Harness is $1500 part and doesn't need to be replaced, at least in my case.

Okay, so around Oct/Nov 2019 the problem with my Engine start/stop button started to become a big problem and I was getting concerned. In Nov. 19, I went to the Honda dealership to get my car serviced. I explained to them that when I try to start my car by pressing the brakes, then the engine start/stop button issue, and the car does not start and often times I hear a click. When this happens all the lights in the car’s dashboard comes on. The starter light, the batter light, the steering light, just about all the lights. Eventually after 3-4 times of trying to start the car, the engine would then start.

The mechanic said that my brake pads were worn out and I needed them repaired. So for this service they repaired rear break pads and resurfaced rotors and performed brake fluid service. They also performed a multi point inspection. They also recommend that I have a transmission service and coolant flush which I did not do as I did not have extra money to pay. The total of this service was $426.90.

After a couple of days, the problem still persisted. Today on 3/25/20 I am just fed up. I have no idea what the problem is. The car did the same thing. The start/stop button is not starting the car on first attempt at times. It’s scary because I leave the house and do not know if my car is going to not start when I try to return home.

Any suggestions on what is going on? I believe there is some sort of electrical problem happening but I am not an expert so I do not for sure.

I have the hard start on the first few months when owning the new 2013 Honda. It turns out to be the failure of oil pump. However, the technician in dealership sent me back a couple times after my complaining. They said it is OK to turn the ignition key for a couple seconds until the engine catches. So, the ignition is overused for a period. Recently, the car has the problem of intermittent no-startup. It's getting worse and worse. I had the battery replaced recently to clear the problem. There is just no noise (not clicking noise) when the key was turned. You have to insert key a couple times to get the luck. I know its going to happen soon, the starter completely silent.

After about 49,000 miles my 2013 Honda Accord is having difficulty starting. I've replaced the car battery. I've replaced the remote key battery. I've taken it to Honda Service to run a diagnostic and had to pay $130 for a print out of them telling me that I need to replace the starter which will run an additional $746. I tried to let them know that this is an issue that seems to be affecting multiple 2013 Honda owners, based on my research, and they have denied hearing anything about any defects regarding the starter. There is currently a class action lawsuit filed against them (filed May 2017). the link to the law firm is: http://capstonelawyers.com/ I've written to them explaining my situation and I'm hoping that they will be able to take me on as well. I am currently debating my best course of action to fix the issue. I'm already out $130 should i go back to Honda and have them repair it or take it to a local mechanic shop to repair? Do I order the $450 Starter from Honda parts or use an aftermarket part? If I replace the Starter will that solve the issue?????

Accord LX 2.4L

About a few months ago, my car started to have a starter problem. First I thought it was a battery problem, so I replaced a new one. After that, my car still had the same problem that I can't start my car. I had to try several times before starting my car. One day, suddenly my car didn't start and even I tried to jump my car but still did not work. I had to tow my car that I paid $150 and Honda dealer charged me about $750 to change starter module and plus $150 for checking my car to diagnosis the problem. More than $1000 spent on just that problem and seems like many of Honda Accord owners are having the same problem. It is ridiculous. Honda should recall for this problem! They even charge so much!! I will never ever buy HONDA again if they don't consider and hide this problem from their customers. Very disappointed!

Accord EX-L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 40,000 miles

I have a 2013 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L v6. Around 40,000 miles I started having sporadic issues with getting the engine to start. I would push-start and the car would light up and the dashboard would light up all the error symbols. It started doing it maybe once a month (January -March 2017), later it started doing it once a week (in the month of March). Then I started working from home more often, and therefore, not driving 40 mile roundtrip commute 5 days a week. It hasn't done it since March 31, 2017 (knock on wood), and it's now June 19 2017. Whenever I took the car to the honda dealership to get a routine oil change, I showed them the video just to look into it. They said that they weren't able to replicate the issue, but from looking at the video they could tell the starter needed to eventually be replaced. They recommended not getting it fixed until it was happening more frequently. They also warned that it would cost anywhere between $800-900 for parts and service because it was out of warranty (36K miles/ 3 years).

It wasnt until I started researching that I realized this is a very common issue with this years model. I agree with all the other complaints here in the fact that I bought a honda for reliability. It's very frustrating knowing that I'll have to throw out $900 with less than $50K miles on a newer car. I'm hoping my video and complaint gets added to the list and provides evidence to Honda to make this a recall part and replaces it for their customers.

Accord Sport 4.6L

My 2013 Honda Accord Sport is used to run my business. I bought it new and 2 months ago it started hesitating to start. I was worried by the 'all of a sudden' issue, so I took it to Honda to see what the problem was. THE STARTER! They charge over $1000 to fix it!!!

I had the starter replaced and the car would start, but with an awful grinding noise and sometimes just a smooth wheel spinning sound - as if no contact with the flywheel. After a month of this garbage, it stopped starting again! Back to the dealership I go...test - (drum beat) - it's a bad starter! WTF!!! Replaced it AGAIN!

Today, I go to work and make it back home - starting with the horrible grinding sound - several hours later I left and guess what...I get stranded!!! The car will not start at all!!! I had to call a tow truck to come pick me up and haul the car back home.

I can't imagine going through this another day! This issue needs to be investigated by NHTSA and these starters need to be recalled immediately. There are so many complaints online regarding the issue with Honda's starters that I cannot believe they have not been recalled yet!?!?

I bought a Honda as a loyal customer. It has less than 21000 miles but since it is out of the 3 year warranty I am in trouble. I have had something serious in the engine replaced under warranty but what concerns me is the intermittent starter issues. A few months ago it would not start. And it does not sound like a battery issue, like a tick. It is just blank. After sitting and trying a few times it started but all the dash lights were on. I brought it into my local dealer who ran a diagnosis free even though I am just out of warranty. Nothing. Yesterday it did the same thing, and started after 4 tries. You would think a Honda should go over 22000 miles. I am very disappointed and will be bailing this brand.

I was very shocked and surprise the starter went out in just 2 years of buying the car. First wouldn't start and had to wait for a few tries to get car started and this last for about a month so finally the car refuse to start while I was at work. I had had enough so I drove directly to the honda dealership and was told it was the starter so I had no choice but to get it repaired.

I own a 2013 Honda Accord Coupe Ex-l v6, started having intermittent starting problems and took it to 2 different Honda dealer 3 times before the problem was diagnosed. I was always told that they couldn't recreate it although I had recorded the sound that the car was making when trying to start it up. The 3rd I went to the dealer first thing in the morning and the service asked me to turn to car off and then turn it back on and the car reproduced the problem and was fixed at 34000 miles. Now a year the car is having the same problem. So I called the dealer and was told its probably not the same problem. I have bought Honda accords since 1998 and they have all been reliable. My 2007 Honda Accord had 218,000 miles before the starter went out. Based on the complaints I believe there is a serious defect that Honda needs to fix. If there is no fix for this problem very soon, I will be trading for another brand and will never buy another Honda again. I also warn all of my friends that are in the market for a car to stay away from Honda due to the intermittent starting problems

I have my car in the shop because I have a hard time starting it. I will press the brakes first then press the start button and it will turn then nothing happens. I have to repeat this process many times up to 3 to 5 minutes before it will start.

Update from Jun 13, 2016: This problem also brought to light my other complaint that the mechanic never experienced until I had problems starting my car. I talked to the service department to day and I need a new starter. The cost would have been $6xx but I purchased the extended warranty so I only have to pay $100.00. I also told Michael in the service department there is a problem with the 2013 Honda Accord. He said they do not have a recall and I told him I will show him this website so maybe they can get a recall to save others money. This is crazy our cars are only 3 years old and less and we have to get repairs done while making a car note.

09/12 & 09/15, car would not start, turns over, does not start, have had it towed two times to the garage. 1st time gave me a new battery, this time can't find anything wrong with it, and now it starts. What the heck! Do you know how stressful it is to feel when you don't know if your car is going to start or not, I have a job where I drive to customer appts. Honda, I need something better than this! This is our 2nd honda. NOT HAPPY, 55K miles.

Update from Oct 5, 2015: about a week after the last time car wouldn't start, now had a message that key battery needs to be replaced, replaced the battery in both keys today, and hoping this stupid reason is why the car wouldn't start and this will not happen again, on day 9 since the last time it didn't start.

Update from Dec 3, 2015: 11/20, 3rd time car would not start, grocery lot parking lot, disconnected the batter, took batteries out of the key fob, tried 3 different times within a few hours, last time gunned the gas while pressing the button and brake, car started.
12/03, took it to Honda dealer today, they said don't know what is going on, can't see a problem, cost me $62.50, said set up to take a picture, so next time they can review the problem.

Update from Dec 3, 2015: picked up car, and the dealer did NOT charge me, thanks for that ;), would be better if it was fixed, hopefully soon.

Update from Mar 14, 2016: 03/13, car did not start again, (lucky for me in the grocery lot parking lot AGAIN), anyways, tried about 10 times to start it, car would not turn over, FCW light, all other lights turned on, had an extra key fob battery, put a new battery in the key fob, battery must have been dead, killed the car, red light, no power at all, put the old key fob batter back in, the car started. drove to Target, bought new key fob battery pack, put the new battery in, and have restarted the car 3 more times to date, no problem. Still hate this, I have not switched keys since the last time, I do not put my cell phone under the radio. I had used an IPOD in the car the previous day and hadn't done that in a while, fluke? What is the problem?

Update from Jul 21, 2016: June 29th, car would not start, had let my kid drive my car and he used his iphone, next day car would not start. I had not connected an iphone/ipod prior to the last time the car wouldn't start, don't exactly know this is the reason or just chance, but iphone/ipod music has been banned in my car.
took the battery out of the key fob, press start til seems car clears memory and new battery til it restarts.
