Altima 2.5 S 2.5L 4c

  • CVT transmission
  • 117,354 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I purchased a 2007 Nissan Altima new in 08/2007. On 12/11/2009 I received a letter from Nissan which doubled the powertrain warrantee to 10 years / 120,000 miles. On 3/1/2014 with 117,540 miles the CVT transmission began making whining noises and was replaced by the dealer under the powertrain warrantee.

In September 2018 the replace CVT started whining again. On 09/8/2018 I brought the car to the dealer to change the CVT transmission fluid. I was told the transmission fluid smelled burnt and the CVT showed slight signs of buckling during their test drive. The dealer declined to change the fluid for fear it would cause more problems. The car has 177,354 miles but the transmission is under 5 years / 60,000 miles. Unfortunately, the replacement CVT is only warrantied 1 year / 12,000 miles.

There are so many complaints from Nissan customers with CVT transmissions. The 2007 CVT transmissions lasted longer than the 2014 with the new ones failing around 60,000 miles. The Nissan CVT transmission problem has not been resolved, it’s actually worse. In today’s disposable society most owners don’t keep cars long enough to experience a failed Nissan CVT and others never post their experience. This allows Nissan to hide the issue and not correct the problem. Nissan CVT transmissions problems are no secret to dealers and mechanics.

I called NISSAN corporate customer service. They looked up the service history based on the VIN. They declined to repair or replace the transmission because the 12K mile warranty on the replacement had passed. If it were a new car the transmission would have been covered under the 60k miles.

I have been a loyal Nissan owner of four cars dating back to my 1977 Datsun 210. I WILL NEVER BUY OR RECOMMEND NISSAN AGAIN!

Well from last year I have been having problem with my transmission.I could reverse up no steep hill and when the car make 60,000 miles it started making this humming sound from the engine room. I thought it was the wheel bearing but it was not.It went on for months and then it actually stops and 2 weeks ago it started to make the humming sound like when a vehicle is in 4wd. and that changed to this clucking sound and then today I went to reverse up my yard and it could hardly make it up there.I just start going backwards.

After about 5 months after having a rebuilt transmission I started noticing jerking again, my husband was an hour and a half away driving it to Illinois with my stepdaughter when it stalled and started jerking and the rpms were going up without any acceleration. He was on the interstate and again could have gotten smoked. The dealership did send a tow to bring him and the car back, they sent it over to the same Nissan dealership to find the problem. Nissan is saying they can't find any problem and now they have probably driven it over the 12,000 rebuilt transmission warranty. We ate going on 5 weeks and no resolution. Ray Skillman where I bought he car says it's Nissan's problem, I say it is both...Nissan knows about these transmission problems and acts like everything is ok, and the dealership acts like I should just pay on a car that I'm scared to death to drive, I am not going to have any breakdown and have on of my kids hurt or myself or husband. This car is unsafe to drive. PERIOD!!!! We have spoken to Nissan corporate they say there is nothing they can do since they can't find any issues. Oh, and did I mention my husband got it all on video. I just don't know how to upload it on here.

Altima 2.5L - 6

  • CVT transmission
  • 150,000 miles

The transmission will occasionally work fine, but most of the time, it is bucking, jerking, etc...

The fluid is clean, and at the correct level.

The vehicle is mostly driven on the highway, with very little stop and go usage.

Are there any recalls for this issue? I see that there are a lot of CVT problems mentioned online.

First I want to say that I was completely shocked that a Nissan transmission would go out at 40K. However, the dealership I took it to for service treated me great. I have a new transmission and they allowed me to use one of their vehicles while I waited over a week for the repair.

Well, this is the 2nd transmission in almost 35k miles. I have taken it back to the same Nissan dealership and they are again taking good care of me. Apparently, Nissan is having a huge problems with transmissions right now. The service guy told me there were already 7 or 8 of them waiting for a new transmission. Some as new as 2014. When they notified Nissan that I needed a new transmission again, Nissan also told them that they needed to add a blower to the transmission and that should resolve the problem long term.

Unfortunately, there is an apparent national backorder on the blower and they have no clue when I will be getting my car fixed. So far, I have been driving around the base model Versa. This car is Fred Flintstones' and it is horrible. It only has 3k miles on it and as the car slows down to about 5 miles or less I can feel sputtering.

They say it could be up to 3 weeks or longer before I get my car back.

Altima S 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 80,000 miles

Tranny jerks hard when put in gear from park, no power on takeoff until higher rpm, it whines, and all this happens regardless of weather condition. Nissian says tranny replacement is needed and its not under warranty cause I now have 130,000 miles on it. When it comes to that I will sell the car. And run away from Nissian. Transmission replacement at 80,000 covered under warranty or not, pure insanity

Altima SL 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 175,000 miles

Hi ppl! Ughh ok so let where do I start?! I bought this 2007 Altima zero milage then about less then 2 years my transmission started acting up on my way back from up north, well I was driving up the grapevine on interstate 5 and it was super hot over 110 degree weather and the car going up hill and started jerking bad and losing power and making a loud hard to explain noise high pitch, I knew it was the transmission so as I'm driving flat surface it stop, well I pulled over to a rest area to check it out and I saw oil splattered all over on top but couldn't pin point where it was coming from. So I let it sit for a while then got back on the freeway I drove about another 155 miles and made it home safe, drove well the rest of the way. The next day took it to Nissan they right away said it was the transmission and come to find out when it's super hot outside the transmission and oil gets too hot and starts to act up so I asked so what? Next tranny is gonna do the same thing? They couldn't give me a straight answer of course, so it got replaced with a "new" tranny and ran fine up until another couple of years well now what it does is only when the weather is really hot and I drive it for long the tranny starts making noise but that's it. So now I can't even f#ckin feel safe driving for long drives in the summer because the transmission gets hot! Ain't that some sh*t?! So now I just continue driving it and hope it doesn't break down but I'm sure it won't last long. Nissans made here suck! It's not like owning the older model Nissans that were made straight from Japan. I should of gotten a Toyota il never buy a Nissan , not even my old 1992 Nissan ever gave me problems transmission on that didn't go out till it hit 260,000 miles! It was the best car ever! These new plastic cars are junk especially made in Pennsylvania! Anyone have this or similar problem with hot weather and tranny acting up???!

Nissan dealer in Rolla Mo diagnosed the problem tore down the transmission and ordered a new replacement transmission. Loaner car was made available. Excellent folks to deal with, Nissan backed up the product. I have heard horror stories about some dealerships and Nissan, but in my case I have nothing but praise.

Altima S 4 cyl

  • CVT transmission
  • 79,536 miles

Always had my regular services done at Nissan. Went on holidays to Vegas and had a service done before trip, in which they told me I needed brakes. Trip to Vegas was great but coming home our rpm's were high, when accelerating we had no power and a whinnying noise when we reached Orem, Utah. Nissan dealer told us we needed a new transmission...we had 128 000 km's on our 2007 Altima S.

Being from Canada and dealing with US dealerships I have to say everyone has treated us great even though it was a pain in the butt it happened on holidays. The dealership loaned us a vehicle for our 4 day stay while it was getting repaired and possibly hotel expense coverage. (will let you know how the hotel expense coverage goes as we are waiting for word back on that as my family and I are sitting in the hotel waiting while i write this)

Hope our new transmission last longer then what others have experienced. Again at this point I have no complaints about our services with Nissan in Orem, Utah and Edmonton, Alberta. Will keep you updated.

Altima S 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 77,500 miles

I have the same exact complaints as most other Altima owners. I brought my Altima in for a very loud whining noise and one person came on test drive with me and heard it. It ended up quitting that weekend so no other person can verify the sound. The dealership held the car for a few days and said they can't do anything about the sound since it didn't happen again. They did fix my sport transmission which didn't work and ended up being a complete failure.

The other problem I'm having which is also common is the fading radio display which is quite annoying.

I wanted to upgrade to a Maxima but with the levels of issues the Altima has combined with the horrible dealership experience I have no choice but to pass on Nissan.

so we had the rattle under 45 mph ever since buying the car 3 years old with 64k miles with 3 year warranty. Did not pay much attention to it because i researched it and read about the heat shield rattle so we thought it was it. took it to mechanic anyway and they said it was the heat shield and not to worry about it. we wanted to fix it so we took it back again and they said it was $200 something to replace it and we decided not to do it there but to take it to my buddy mechanic who will do it cheaper. He told us that this was not the heat shield rattle but a transmission noise. He took the heat shield off and i brought it to the dealer and said here you go there is the heat shield we still have the rattle and it is the transmission, i wanted to kill someone over there. NOW they hear the transmission too and tell us to go to Nissan to replace it since they(honda dealer) don't have the parts. We go to nissan they hear the transmission right away and replace the transmission for free, they have put the brand new one in and it makes the world of difference. They also told us that altima's come with 10 year 120,000 transmission warranty and they did not even have to use our extended one. DO NOT LET THEM TELL YOU IT IS THE HEAT SHIELD, IF YOU HAVE THE RATTLE AT LOW SPEEDS GO AND GET THE TRANSMISSION CHECKED.

Altima S 2.5L 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 55,000 miles

Pretty much the category explains it all. Whenever I change gear on the car, it jolts. Also, in the mornings, especially when it is cold it would make a loud grinding noise. At first I thought this was something relating to maintenance, so I went to get a service at a Nissan Dealer. I explained to them the problem but they told me I need to have the car service since I was not going to an authorize dealer to do my basic maintenance. I decided to do the 55k mileage maintenance and it ended up costing me $800. They did a complete service (transmission flush, replaced engine oil and filter, inspected the axle, break pads, rotors, steering gear etc). I was told the problem should definitely be resolved. The car was driving smooth for the new 2-3 weeks, and the same problem resurfaced. I was infuriated and wrote a complain to Nissan. I got a call from the Service dept the next day and they told me to bring it in and they'll replaced the transmission. Although they replaced the transmission for free, I still shelled out $800 previously. Everything was fixed after.
