While in gear, traveling approx. 40-50mph, vehicle stopped moving without warning (no engine light, no overheating) and had to coast during heavy freeway traffic, which caused several other vehicles to suddenly slow or stop. Car was towed & code evaluation was performed. Radiator and transmission had to be replaced due to a defective radiator which leaked coolant into transmission for $5347.52.

After getting stranded, I had the vehicle towed to Nisson Dealer in Fresno, Ca. The options were a transmission rebuild or replace with a new one. We chose a rebuild after being assured that it had a 100% warranty. 6 months later the transmission starts clunking loudly and having a difficult time accelerating (RPM would ramp high). I took it back to the dealer knowing that it was still under warranty. The night before returning my husband checked the transmission oil (for color and signs of metal) and found it had a burnt smell to it but clear looking. The dealer told me the transmission was milky looking and I would need to replace the transmission, again! I reminded him it was still under warranty but he said it was something we did to the vehicle that caused the problem!!!! Bottom line they did honor the warranty and that was the last time we will do business there. Very disappointed in the professionalism. Do not take your vehicle to Fresno Lythia Dealership in Fresno, Ca.

WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 NISSAN PATHFINDER WITH 93000 MILES ON THE CAR, IT WOULD BEGAN TO SHUDDER AND SHAKE AS IF RUNNING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS AND TEMPORARILY LOSE POWER THAT NEARLY CAUSED ME TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT TRANSMISSION FAILED DUE TO RADIATOR COOLANT MIXING WITH TRANSMISSION OIL. I AM DISGUSTED IN NISSAN'S CONDUCT. THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SINCE THE BEGINNING. THIS PROBLEM MOSTLY OCCURS AROUND 90K+ MILE MARK AND BY THAT TIME THE EXTENDED WARRANTY OFFERED BY NISSAN AS PART OF THEIR CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IS OVER. THE SETTLEMENT IS AN ADMISSION OF FAULT ON NISSAN'S PART AND NHTSA/CAS SHOULD FORCE NISSAN TO ISSUE A RECALL OR HAVE THEM PAY FOR THE FULL REPAIR OF ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES.

I honestly feel like this particular issue should be a worldwide recall. I'm not ther first person as I can clearly see I'm not the only one with this problem. Car was already out of warranty and called Nissan and they refused to help out to fix the problem. We've owned 4 Maxima's the Pathfinder and I hate to say that we will never buy another vehicle from them ever again. I'm not made out of million of bucks and I don't have the money to fix the problem. So i guess we will wait till somebody dies or gets injured. Times are hard and everything keeps getting expensive.

Pathfinder LX 3.2L V6

I had no problems with my vehicle up until this radiator/transmission problem. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that Nissan refuses to take full responsibility for their defective radiator, and the very costly transmission problems that it causes ($3500 repair job).

It could have been as simple as issuing a recall to replace all the faulty radiators, and Nissan would have kept many of its loyal customers. I have only owned Nissan vehicles up until this time and this situation makes me certain that I will NOT buy another Nissan vehicle after this one.

The silly little extended warranty deal they tried to implement is completely useless because, conveniently for them, my vehicle (and numerous others I am sure) does not fall within the criteria. Ideally this giant corporation would refund customers who have to had spend money out of their own pocket in order to repair a problem that has nothing to do with general wear and tear. I won't hold my breath.

This problem has been reported numerous times, Nissan has admitted to it, and it is well documented. Nissan has given an extended warranty up to 100,000 miles but this problem usually happens after 100k miles in which case you are SOL. When my mechanic diagnosed this problem they gave a conservative estimate of around $5,000 to fix so I decided to cut my losses and go get a new car. I really liked the Pathfinder too, it was a great car but what was lurking under the hood all this time makes it not worth it. The Pathfinder has been stamped with the "Car Complaints" seal of "Avoid Like the Plague" and I wish I had!

My 2006 Nissan Pathfinder broke down in a busy street, was scary, specially because I had my wife and my child in the car with me. Could not believe when was searching about this car transmission and I found out this is a common problem in this kind of car. I am so frustrate!! Need the car for work and I can't use it, I don't know when I am gonna be able to fix because the costs to fix exceeds $4000. I don't know what to do or where to go. Hope there is any way to have this covered by Nissan.

Reading other similar complaints about 2005-2010 Pathfinder on this website. I am wondering if there is a $90 solution to bypass the original setup and have a separate radiator for Transmission. Why couldn't Nissan do it or at least inform all owners about it so we could have avoided spending 4-5K on repairing something that is manufacturing design defect. I am in no way claiming to be a mechanic, but I am assuming other vehicles also have a similar setup, even other Nissan models. How come this is the problem only for Pathfinders?

This is a design flaw and there should have been a RECALL instead of a class action lawsuit, but I guess our government is too busy looking out for special interest lobbyists. I am disgusted in Nissan's conduct and also the conduct of NHTSA & CAS, who did not do anything when there was Class-Action lawsuit to prove these were not isolated issue with a few vehicles, but a design flaw.

I had to replace my transmission. Not aware of the class action suit or any type of recall. My new transmission is not having the same problems I just fixed less than 2 years ago and with the coolant leaking into the transmission, flushing it won't help. Nissan needs to at least broadcast how to solve the problem at a bare minimum and should supply reduced priced parts for those of us that suffer from this defect.

I bought my 2006 Pathfinder from a used car dealer about a year ago and of course there was no mention of this ongoing problem. I have been wanting one of these for a while. I'm a 6 vehicle Datsun/Nissan owner and now, not even a year into owning this Pathfinder, I'm sorry I bought it. Sounds like Nissan isn't doing anything to help its customers either.

I was driving my Nissan Pathfinder home when suddenly I saw fumes steaming out of the front passenger-side of the hood. I stopped and soon some whitish liquid began to ooze out from the bottom. On inquiry, I was told the coolant leaked into the transmission; that the cost will range from $3000.00 to $5000.00 (dollars) depending on the option I choose.

I just read reports from several Pathfinder users who complained of similar problems. What I don't understand is why Nissan motor company is silent about such a grievous problem? I was lucky not to be stranded several miles away from home because I travel a lot.

Learned yesterday this is now MY problem as Nissan has settled their class action that does nothing for me or the hundreds of others that have just over 100,000. miles. Their settlement made the consumer responsible for their known product defect which is now my $6000. repair bill. Why weren't these vehicles recalled and the radiators replaced BEFORE the transmissions were allowed to be cross contaminated and ruined. If you were lucky enough not to have 100,000 miles, they fixed it but you had to pay a deductible of $2500-3000 based on mileage. Why should the consumer have to pay anything? A decent company would have a good product recall program, notified the consumers affected and fixed the issue instead of hiding behind a class action that essentially illeviates them of liability! How much did that save you NISSAN?

There was a recall on this problem so Nissan admitted there was a problem but because my car is over the milelage limit they imposed, they will not pay for the repair.

Update from Jul 21, 2015: I had the transmission rebuilt only to be told, now you need a TCM.,(Transmission Control Module) Ok I suffered through that. One weekafter getting the truck back and $4500 later now its the timing chains. I have learned a lot and instead of rambling on about the pain in my heart from the shock of it all, I world like to offer any assistance I can from my experiences so if you need help, Please feel free to email me at ppmcgowan@aol.com

Pathfinder Se 4x4 4.0L Dohc V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,780 miles

My 2006 Nissan pathfinder recently broke down on the road due to transmission failure at 69780 miles.

A year ago in 2013 August I noticed that some liquid leaking out when the vehicle stops, suddenly I opened the hood and found that it is from the coolant tank but the color doesn’t looks like coolant. I took the vehicle to a local workshop and they found out that the interior components of the radiator (internal transmission oil coolers) broke down allowing coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. As a result I replaced the radiator and flushed out transmission fluid, I even continue do the transmission flush out several times and the vehicle was running good. Just after a year in August 2014 suddenly the trans started shifting poorly at 69780 miles and stop moving I took it to the local Aamco transmission and rebuild the transmission , so for the both transmission and radiator I spent $5,680.00. This is due to the manufacturing defect from Nissan’s engineering and they supposed to reimburse the money I spent for no fault from my side.

Bought car, mint condition from original owner. Took a family trip for a Thanksgiving dinner. Pathfinder broke down 800 miles away from home. We replaced the radiator and flushed the transmission completely. We made it home but took it to the Nissan dealer and the repairs costs were astronomical. I ended up replacing the transmission with a new unit. The cost after the radiator was right at 5,000 dollars..Merry Freakin Christmas!!

Pathfinder SE 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 108,000 miles

OK, where do I start? We decided to buy an SUV because our little two door car wasn't cutting it with two kids. Worst mistake we made was wondering onto a Nissan dealership. We test drove a few cars and my wife kinda liked the Pathfinder so we sat down with the salesmen to talk numbers. Well, we couldn't come to terms so we decided to leave because it was getting close to time to pick our kids up from school and as we were walking to the door a man came running out from the back yelling so my wife left and I stayed to talk to the man. He dropped the price because the car had been on his lot too long and it was about to start costing him money. We put 13k down on the car and financed the rest though a bank.

Now on to the bad part, My wife was driving our kids to school one day and all of a sudden the Nissan Pathfinder started to shake and vibrate viciously causing my wife and two small children to pull over on the shoulder of a very busy interstate. My wife calls me at work and concerned for their safety I leave work to get them. I get behind the wheel of this P.O.S Nissan Pathfinder and start to slowly drive it back home because I couldn't afford a tow bill at the time. Everything seemed fine for a while, no check engine light, tires looked fine, so I continued home.

So we get off the interstate in one piece (luckily) and I pull up to a busy intersection by my house and start to drive through the intersection and then all hell breaks loose, the Nissan Pathfinder starts to shake and vibrate violently and I loose power in the middle of this busy intersection almost getting hit by oncoming traffic. I finally get the Pathfinder home (thank god) and I don't know what to do so I get online and see what I can find.

Quickly I find where a bunch of Nissan vehicles are having the same problem I am having where the radiator coolant is leaking into the transmission causing catastrophic failure and my heart sinks. My wife was a full time student at the time and I was the only one working and I knew I couldn't afford to pay for all these repairs. I called the local Nissan dealership and told them what was happening with my Nissan Pathfinder and I was quickly put on hold. They told me that if I didn't have a warranty that they wasn't responsible for the problem, but I could bring it to them and for a fee I could have them diagnose the problem. I took it to a local transmission shop and was told it was going to cost $4500 - $5000 to fix.

The Pathfinder has been sitting for a while now and I have tried calling the Nissan North America and they refuse to help me so now we are having to borrow family and friends cars to get us both to work and our kids to school. My advice to whoever reads this, DO NOT BUY NISSAN. I've experienced horrible customer service with the dealership and the head office. They produce inferior products and will leave you high and dry. I will continue to tell my experience with Nissan with everyone I can. God Bless
